one HOT product!
Pros: powerful, digital input, auto calibration, dynamic range compression, sound options
Cons: remote not universal, surround cables too short
I am not an expert in sound, but with my benchmark being going to the actual theater, this product delivers an amazing comparable sound if you use the digital cable. The digital cable is provided but it?s rather short (2 feet maybe). It worked for me though, so no need to get one of those overly marked up cables. After running the speaker cables (mind that you may need extra cable if your room is pretty large) the set up couldn?t be easier: you just push the auto setup button on the remote and the surround sound parameters are automatically adjusted for you. However, you can adjust all parameters individually, and this is what I ended up doing to maximize the sweet spot! There are a few good tips throughout the manual to help you with that. Btw, all the menus are clearly summarized in a table within the manual. The only con that I have is that the remote is not universal.
For movies you have different sound modes to recreate different sound stages: one that works for traditional movies, one for movies with great sound effects, and one for musicals. However, my favorite feature is the dynamic range compression which allows you to limit the sound when watching movies late at night. It is all too common to raise the volume when only voices are heard, and lower it for soundtrack or special effects, so this feature fixes that for me.
The music too is incredible, whether it be FM or CD. You can set a different sound for each station or music input to fit the music style. Your choices are Jazz, Concert, and Hall.
Overall, this product is all I wanted, and probably even more that what I needed. So, unless you need serious wattage and powered sub to make your walls and neurons tremble and decay, this product is worth a serious look, and from hearing other $300 ? $500 HTIBs this Sony?s sound was comparable if not better. Add a price you can?t pass on ($180 with tax) and the decision was clear to me!
