Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance.
Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent sound fields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialog, music and effects from ideally located in these separate sound fields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and startlingly realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater! The decoding circuitry performs Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS Digital Surround, DTS-ES (DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1), DTS Neo: 6 and DTS 96/24 decoding with extreme accuracy, as well as all digital sound field processing. A THX Select mode is provided as an extra listening option.

Great sound system for the moneyby benbboy - August 5, 2007
Pros: Plenty of power, Bass extends to low frequencies, config is not overly difficult, supplied cables.
Cons: Bass lacks some punch, some higher frequencies are accompanied with a hissing/screeching noise.
Review:
This is a great sound system for 400 bucks. I picked it up last year and I've been impressed since the first time I heard it. Set up is not too difficult if you've done a bit of research on visual/audio connections. Unfortunately this does not have HDMI, but it's not a big deal.
The Subwoofer could be better; not quite tight enough. I find that when I listen to movies some dialogue (usually female) has a hissing noise in the backround. It's a bit annoying but it has gone away slightly as the speakers have been playing for an extended period of time.
There are a large amount of sound settings/fields to explore; and after a year I haven't even used all of them. Music Enchancer 5 channel is great when listening to mp3's. I find that I listen to the standard movie fields even when gaming.
Unlike many HTIB w/ DVD players the surround speakers are not flimsy and the left and right speakers are very solid. My only complaint is that more focus could have been put on the center speaker. It seems a bit cheaper than the rest of the system.
I'd recommend this system to anyone - it's a lot of fun with a built in 6 channel amp.
I have heard other systems, many worse and a few better-but for the price range this is one of the better systems.

I have a large room and this system fills it up nicely. Looked around for alot of devices and this has the best bang for the buck. I had a complete Sony system before and this sounds twice as good for half the price.

I was looking for a dvd player based "home theater in box" when the very helpfull best buy guy steered my towards this system. He was right, this system sounds better than any of the dvd based systems I heard at 4 different stores.
I dont think I would put this system in the same league as my old Boston Acoustics HD series 5.1 w/Mirage sub system, but it doesn't cost any where near the same price. I suspect that replacing the cheap speaker wire supplied with the unit with some of higher quality would improve the sound also. You wil l need the owners manual and some patience to get this system set up properly. Overall this is a very good system, and I am very happy with it.

I purchased it at Best Buy about two months ago. I find the sound to be crisp and clear with exellent base even with non-powered sub. I spent quite a while in configuring my setup, but my god does it rock.
