"Read for true information on this great product." on by buglovin77

Pros: Excellent sound quality, Build quality, Many many functions.

Cons: You really need to be into audio / video to get the maximum potential from this unit. It can be a bit tricky, but once set up this is an outstanding unit. Keep the manual close by until you familiarize yourself with the different menus.

Summary: Before purchasing the Denon 1708 I used the Onkyo 601. If you have ever heard this unit you know how good it sounds and how easy it is to set up. I use all klipsch speakers and put a great deal of time into "listening" to music. Accurate sound reproduction is very important which is why I was worried about replacing the 601. I was happy to find out I did not make a poor purchase. The sound processors in this unit are much cleaner than in the Onkyo. The unit is rated 10 wpc less than the Onkyo however the signal to the speakers is cleaner and plays much louder without distortion. (than the Onkyo 601) I personally enjoy tinkering with things so I get a lot of enjoyment out of sorting through all of the different functions. I will say that this can be a very tricky unit to set up PROPERLY. If you are just looking for a good unit that sounds decent you may want to look at something with a few less options. If you are looking at a unit near the $500 range then you should now enough about audio to get by. Just don't lose the manual. Again I really enjoy this unit and have no regrets about the purchase. One of the things I like the most is the Zone 2 option. You can use 2 of the rear channels if you decide to run a 5.1 setup to power speakers in another room or outside.... I so love the ability to keep the kids in the living room while I listen to another source on the back deck. EXCELLENT!

"Don't buy this Receiver!!!!!!!!!!" on by yankton16

Pros: There are no pros to this product.

Cons: Overly complicated programming and set up. Inherent defective design causes the receiver to shut down and not operate.

Summary: I had this receiver hooked up for TWO WEEKS and then it just started shutting off after being powered for about 3 seconds. It won't stay on. Having a receiver that won't stay on doesn't do much for the home theater system. I'M MASSIVELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS PURCHASE. I MIGHT AS WELL HAVE THROWN MY $250.00 IN THE GARBAGE. And don't think that Denon gives a &&&*%^% about your problems. You can call them if you want but they know about the problem and they don't care. When I was told the cost of shipping this POS receiver back was not covered by the warranty, I told them I would rather invest the money in a new system and would not buy Denon again, ever. Stay away from this and all Denon products if you're smart. Don't make the mistake I made.

"Great AVR received if you know what your getting" on by Partycrasher79

Pros: Easy to use, and set up
Works perfect with my Logitech universal remote

Cons: Manual can be confusing, set up can be a bear if you don't know what you're doing

Summary: Great AV receiver for those using small to midsize speakers, bookshelfs or in wall speakers. Those with larger floor standing speakers will need a receiver that puts out a bit more power.

Go in aware that this reciever only does HDMI pass thru (no audio through HDMI)
You can Find get a great deal on this receiver I got it for $100 brand new.
I was just in the market for something to do HDMI video switching so this worked out perfect for me

Works great with my in wall speakers. Have my PS3 and Xbox 360 connected through HDMI, and Optical audio. Cable Box with DCoax for just audio.

"Don't BUY---it malfunctions & has no sound on HDMI" on by perdave19

Pros: Easy user interface, great surround sound options

Cons: NO sound on HDMI Crashes often (google power cycle denon)

Summary: Well, When I wanted to upgrade my HK to a receiver with HDMI i went with the denon. I was so happy when I made the purchase. Then at home I found out. Day 1- no sound on HDMI. Only the $$$$.00 denon has it in 07. Which is probably going to be corrected in competitors at this price point.

Well, I could not afford the better models so I just connected digital inputs from DVD, VUDU, etc. But, then 29 days into owning it the machine stoped working. It would turn on and then power cycle off. 2 hours of research shows many people with this problem. Its called a circuit catch. Anyway all attempts to correct make you send it to NJ to repair. This occured on a friday. So nothing for me to do. Good thing it didn't happen on superbowl or similar weekend. The manual says that it only happens due to speakers shorting or overheating or surge. But I had a double surge system and a full vents. So, its clear this is a denon issue.

So, wait for a model with HDMI sound not just video(this is a top reason you bought it most likely) and possibly a thought if you go with the denon get the extra service plan.

    Enjoy.
p.s. never had an issue with H.K.
