Pros: Excellent sound quality, Build quality, Many many functions.
Cons: You really need to be into audio / video to get the maximum potential from this unit. It can be a bit tricky, but once set up this is an outstanding unit. Keep the manual close by until you familiarize yourself with the different menus.
Summary: Before purchasing the Denon 1708 I used the Onkyo 601. If you have ever heard this unit you know how good it sounds and how easy it is to set up. I use all klipsch speakers and put a great deal of time into "listening" to music. Accurate sound reproduction is very important which is why I was worried about replacing the 601. I was happy to find out I did not make a poor purchase. The sound processors in this unit are much cleaner than in the Onkyo. The unit is rated 10 wpc less than the Onkyo however the signal to the speakers is cleaner and plays much louder without distortion. (than the Onkyo 601) I personally enjoy tinkering with things so I get a lot of enjoyment out of sorting through all of the different functions. I will say that this can be a very tricky unit to set up PROPERLY. If you are just looking for a good unit that sounds decent you may want to look at something with a few less options. If you are looking at a unit near the $500 range then you should now enough about audio to get by. Just don't lose the manual. Again I really enjoy this unit and have no regrets about the purchase. One of the things I like the most is the Zone 2 option. You can use 2 of the rear channels if you decide to run a 5.1 setup to power speakers in another room or outside.... I so love the ability to keep the kids in the living room while I listen to another source on the back deck. EXCELLENT!
