"Great Unit for the price" on by aburtonco
Pros: Great Sound
Great Looks
Lots of Features (even some you don't need just yet)Cons: Using the remote for anything more than volume control is a joke
No Sound through the HDMI inputs (dissapointing for a unit at this pricepoint)
Takes a while (and some practice) to get used to using this unitSummary: I have an older Sony receiver, and a new Onkyo receiver. I also returned a new Pioneer receiver so I could purchase this Unit.
First impression, very good looking unit. Sound is equal to my Onkyo, but the Denon has a higher quality look to it. It gives you the feeling that it will be working for a long time.
I was warned about how "un-user friendly" these Denon receivers can be. I have to say, once you get used to it, they're not that bad. Now the remote, that's another story. Who-ever designed the remote needs to look into a new career.
Overall I am really pleased with the AVR-1709. I could have gotten an Onkyo for about the same price, but the feel of Onkyo just seems cheaper. Not the sound, just the feel. I hope i made a good choice, because I know I sacrificed a few features to go with the Denon.
As of now I would easily recomend this product, but only to a customer who appreciates quality and feels that they are saavy enough to figure this thing out. Good unit Denon. -
"Super receiver for the money" on by HARLRYTLF
Pros: Excellent build quantity and look, cant tell it from Denon's models costing 2 - 3 times as much. Denon's customer service is first rate when it comes to setup.
Cons: No sound input through HDMI, you must use a toslink or digital coax for each piece of equipment hooked up with HDMI to get audio. No problem for me since I have all my video hooked up direct to the HDTV anyway.
Summary: You can get it for under $300.00 if you hunt hard enough, which makes it a no brainer. The sound is great, took a couple of days of playing around with the settings to get it right. I didn't use the Audessy auto set up - it may have been a lot easier, but I like the hands on approach of hearing all the possibilities...

"Denon AVR-1709" on by vdaniels32
Pros: Beautiful sound!
Cons: I bought the 1709. It worked for a little over a year and failed. I am extremely sadden by the fact that I paid several hundred dollars for this piece of equipment that has a history of failing after one year!
Summary: Don't purchase a Denon Receiver. Be safe than sorry. I didn't research this receiver before purchasing it. A rep from Bose recommended this receiver. I thought he knew what he was talking about. Denon Receivers have a habit of malfunctioning after the first year! I wish I was made aware of this prior to my purchase on 5/25/09.

"1708 & 1709 Piece of Junk. Buy any other A/V amplifier" on by nolikedenon
Pros: Features when it works
Cons: High failure rate
Summary: I have had the 1708 for about a year before it failed. I sent it in and in the meantime bought the 1709. It worked for a little over a year before it failed. I am assuming the same issue. Part Replaced-Electrical IC516, Hardwire IC403D to CP904,

"Sounds good but requires continual adjustment." on by wadejm
Pros: The sound is very good once you have all the setting correct.
Cons: Everytime you change the source you must re-set your settings for the best sound. Sound is not derived from HDMI.
Summary: The sound produce is very good, but don't change anything or your have to re do most settings. You can not watch on show and listen to another. You get what you pay for.
