From where we sit, it's easy to see that the cost of a first-class receiver just keeps getting more and more affordable. Take Denon's AVR-2802. It's four rungs down from the company's top-of-the-line AVR-5803, but you'd never know that from glancing over this midpriced model's extensive features list or listening to its delicious sound quality.

It's what's inside that counts
The AVR-2802 is a 6-by-90-watt-per-channel A/V receiver. Denon loaded on a host of advanced features such as Dolby Digital and DTS 6.1-channel (ES-Matrix and Discrete) decoding and Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS Neo:6 to create superb surround sound from stereo sources. We also noted A/B speaker switching, HDTV/component-video switching, and multisource/multizone operation.

Connectivity choices are quite good: there's a nice selection of composite and S-Video jacks, a turntable input, four digital-audio inputs and one output, a set of jacks for a DVD-Audio or a SACD player, and finally, 7.1 preamp outputs that'll come in handy if you ever want hook up a monster power amp.

When it comes to looks, there's not much to crow about--the AVR-2802 is a generic, black receiver with a minimally cluttered faceplate. The blue LED isn't terribly informative. Setup details such as assigning our DVD to a digital input taxed our patience, though the remote was slightly better than average; its flip-down cover mercifully hides lesser-used buttons.

Dazzling Denon
Warm toned and luscious, the 2802 brought out the best in John Williams's ravishing score for A.I. Artificial Intelligence, which features an ethereal choir, lush strings, and lots of tinkly percussion. Too bad the film is such a bore! All of the unsettling surround effects sprinkled throughout the Bram Stoker's Dracula DVD were holographically immersive. We ran the front speakers in the Large setting, and the 2802 never ran out of juice as it summoned up the Training Day DVD's pulsing bass lines. Speaking of bass, the 2802's bass management directs low frequencies to the sub, even with stereo sources and when using the Large setting on the front speakers. Most receivers shortchange the sub under those conditions.

We cranked up Elvis, boogied with Muddy Waters, and grooved to Dizzy Gillespie, and the 2802's sound was never less than a joy. Dolby's Pro Logic II expertly spread these old stereo recordings over our Dynaudio Contour 5.1 speaker array. The simulated surround effects were consistently natural.

2802 vs. its big brother
We compared the 2802 with its bigger sibling, the AVR-3802. But it was no contest--the pricier receiver sounds both more refined and gutsier. Even on our stereo listening tests, the 2802 was dimensionally flatter and tonally brighter than the 3802. In addition, when we used it while watching DVDs, the 3802's sweeter demeanor was easier on the ears over the course of a two-hour film. We loved the 2802's sound, but discriminating listeners should take the plunge and go for the 3802.

The AVR-2802 lists for $799, and it's a solid performer in its price class. If it weren't for the setup hassles, we'd bump the rating up another point to a strong 8. If the Denon's price tag is out of reach, check out Pioneer's sweet-sounding VSX-D850S.

Sounds great specially in movies

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It took me half a day to tweak and set up the system. I recommend using the TV screen set up and forget the manual. After that you will be rewarded with great sound.

Cons:

Review: I use the reciever with a set of energy take 5.2 speakers and it sounds awsome. Very clear and loud for 90 watts. I blew two of the 100 watt satilite speakers?

Lovin It

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i just got this reciever,,, i couldnt be happier,,, it was my first move from an older reciever to a full A/V one with prologic 2 and other settins, i cant say enough about the quality of this product,,, everyone is baggin on its hard to set up process,,, well if u know ur way around electronics at all, it wont take u more than 2 mins after u plug everything in. id give it a 10, but i dont know what the best of the best preforms like, and with the satisfaction im gettin from this, i have no intentions of findin out soon... so if u want a good quality reciever, tons of options, decent price,,, this be the one for you,,, the only holdup is the size n weight,,, but if u buy for that reason,,, ur stupid...

Stunning Sound but ...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The surround sound reproduction is stunning! However... - Multi Source capability is a gimmick. It requires an external amp to feed in to, and won't convert a Digital sound source into a Analog, to pass through the RCA-out connectors. This means your DVD or CD that is connected to the amp via a digital cable cannot be fed through the Multi-Source. - Remote is large and clunky. It's range of compatible devices is limited to a handful of brands. Buy a 3rd party learning remote that is better designed.

good bit of kit, for price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: took along while to make my mind up, after looking at several option's. this unit working along side my kef 6.1 setup, make's the hair's stand up on the back of you know what. Lot's of mid range, power when needed, working down to quieter moment's, it's got the lot,all this and well priced, after searching the web. Go on treat yourself, you only live once.

The best $699 I ever spent.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I upgraded from the AVR 1602 to the AVR 2802 and it was a night and day difference. I played the Matrix DVD and I could not believe the difference in clarity and detail. I have read alot of reviews on this reciever complaining about the set up and I dont see what the problem is. It only took me 10 minutes to completely set it up, maybe because I had the 1602 and was already familiar with their platform?

I aggree with CNET, great value but step up to bat and buy the 3802!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Fantastic little receiver, but the 3802 has 7 channels under power and sounds much warmer. Plus it can accept DVD-Audio. And more video switching. Warning both receivers have horrible remotes.

clean and powerful

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Denon has really hit the mark with this fine unit. It makes my Bose Acoustimas 10's come alive. A nice feature is the subwoofer assignable cutoff frequencies. Everything below 100 Hz is sent to my JBL subwoofer. The only thing I can say is WOW!!

User Rating: 8/10

Very Good All-Around Choice

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Good quality system. Good amplifier section. The Denon compares very favorably to the my old HK reciever it replaced. One nice feature is the ability to send more signal to your main/front speakers in various modes. Since my front speakers are JBL towers, I want to be listening more through them then the other speakers. Great idea. Another feature I wanted was having A/B speakers. I wanted to be able to pipe music out on my deck without using an external switch. The Denon lets me do that. I am a little disappointed in the manual. Though it has idiot proof diagrams on how to connect your other gear, it doesn't go into enough detail and explaination of all the features and modes. A little more technical detail for those who want it would be nice.

Pain in the @#$ to set-up

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Could not get the on-screen configurator to work with component and composite cables. Contacted tech support for assistance. Said they would call back in 15 minutes-- I still have not heard from them. Phone lines constantly busy. I am hoping that this is a case of "Good things come with a price."

Excellent A/V reciever

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Awsome sound reproduction in both music and home theater modes. The remote, well thats another story, what the hell were they thinking!! Ditch the remote and pick up a touch screen, this reciever can be found for $500.00 on the net, thats a bargain!

User Rating: 9/10

Future-proof to 7.1

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I love the visual setup display...DTS-ES and DD-EX is great with an additional amp you can have 7.1 setup...Bass is nice and tight, a tad on the warm side...
