"Great AV Receiver!"4.5 starson by Billy-And-Smith
Pros: Sound quality
Ease of set up
Apple product ready
Cons: High price
Summary: I had spent months researching AVR's from the big name manufacturers; Kenwood, Sony, Marantz, Harmon Kardon, Pioneer, Onkyo, Yamaha, and opted for the Denon3313CI. Not sure I could have made a better decision.Edit:
Set up was no more difficult than plug and play. If you've ever hooked up a component stereo in the past, setting up the 3313CI will be no more difficult than what you may already be used to. The GUI is simple to manipulate if you aren't a paste-eating simpleton. The parameters you can control are too numerous for me to list (I type too slowly). One of the most pleasant surprises was the ability to control the graphic eq of each individual speaker.
I am running Fluance ES Series 7.1 Higher Fidelity Surround Sound Home Theater Speaker System with DB150 Powered Subwoofer, with the towers bi-amped to allow the use of the front height channel of the Denon's amp. As I tend to be exceedingly cautious with an investment this large, I doubled the amount of time recommended by Fluance to break in the speakers before giving them a legitimate test at high volume to evaluate the clarity of both the speakers and the amplifier. Both exceeded my expectations for clarity and lack of distortion. The Denon puts out a crystal clean 125 watts per channel that the speakers handled with graceful ease.
The test was performed by playing a variety of music at brain-curdling volume levels over the span of about an hour. The music ranged from jazz to metal with the amp set to multi-channel stereo. The amp, as expected, heated up. But not to an alarming temperature or to the point of the Denon protecting itself from my tinnitus-inducing escapade by shutting down. At no point did the sound clip or distort. My only issue was in not having the LPF set properly between the subwoofer pre-out and the crossover on the powered sub. Once I straightened that out, it was all smooth sailing from there. If it can take the punishment I put it (and myself) through earlier today, any sane use of the equipment will present no problems for this avr.
I would caution against using speakers that cannot handle the power this amp is capable of delivering. Most "budget" home theater speakers will buckle under the weight of this amp. Speaker choice is paramount in completing any audio system, and to sully this avr by the use of sub-par speakers would be nothing if not tragic. The greatest amplifier in the world can be made to sound less than average if run through substandard speakers. Don't spend the money on this amazing avr if you don't intend to do it justice by giving it some quality speakers to run through.
