Manufacturer description

D.D.S.C.-Digital is a circuit configuration specially designed by DENON in which all elements of the surround processor are optimized through the use of selected high performance discrete components, including separate A/D and D/A converters, with sophisticated DSP surround decoding. New D.D.S.C.-Digital incorporates the latest devices and also DENON LINK digital circuit. For decoding and processing various digital signals with the highest level of accuracy, DENON developed new 32bit floating point DSP for the AVR-3805, so this new D.D.S.C-Digital circuit provide the ultimate in multi-channel performance. DENON LINK has just been upgraded to the 3rd edition. The new edition now allows the input of Super Audio CD digital signals as well as DVD-Video/Audio. To transfer audio signals, DENON has developed a unique digital transmission technology, known as DENON LINK. This digitally balanced transfer technology permits jitter-less data transfer and low noise. The AVR-3805 incorporates this latest digital audio interface, so the end user will experience absolute finest in audio playback between AVR-3805 and DENON LINK featured DVD player. This video transcoding to component signals, letting you enjoy high picture quality from all video gear connected to the AVR-3805. Since composite and S-video signals are also converted into component video signals and output to the monitor, all you need to do is connect a monitor that can display component video images. The AVR-3805 is equipped with auto set up and room equalizing capability to achieve the ideal sound field for your room. With the microphone placed on your listening position, the powerful new 32bit floating point DSP analyzes accurately and automatically adjusts and sets the speaker configurations for your listening room. Also AVR-3805 analyzes the frequency response with 8 band parametric equalizer and adjust to optimum sound field. The microphone is equipped high performance microphone unit and heavy duty base to suppress the vibration for accurate analyzing. Pure direct function is designed for audiophiles to enjoy the audio sources. This function turns off the video circuit and FL display and also digital circuit while the analog playback. While you playback PCM source, DENON's waveform technology AL24 plus processing is worked and bring out all the delicate nuances of the music. The AVR-3805's remote controller is completely new designed for easy to use. It is featured EL technology, and it gives you a sophisticated design and control. The AVR-3805 features an equal power 7-channel amplifier section, with identical amplifier design on all 7 channels, with high current discrete output devices on all channels. Each of the 7 amplifier channels is rated at 120 watts, into 8 ohms, from 20 Hz - 20 kHz with no more than 0.05% THD. A huge power transformer has been connected in the power section where it is combined with a rectifier diode and a large block capacitor to ensure a large, stable supply of electrical current. Accordingly, the AVR-3805 boasts high output power of 120 W for each of the 7 channels. A large-capacity block capacitor was developed for the AVR-3805 to ensure a rock stable supply of power. The AVR-3805 provides a Multi Zone Output function and a Select function that let you output different sources to multiple zones. Sources can be selected for output to an additional zone, in addition to the main room. Multi-room Zone 2 can have variable pre-amp output along with composite video feed. And an independently selected source can be output to Multiroom Zone 3 as a fixed output. The AVR-3805's Power Amplifier Assign function lets you assign the 2 or 3 Surround Back (SB L/R) amplifier channels when the system is not configured for 7.1, to instead drive the Multi-room Zone 2 speakers, with 120 Watts per channel output power, while still providing 5 discrete amplifier channels to drive all speakers in a 5.1 configured home theater room.

Denon's AVR-3805 receiver is a knockout. Its sound quality almost compares with high-end separate preamp/processor and amplifier combinations, and its array of features and back-panel connections is enough to choke a horse. Priced at $1,199 list, it might stretch your savings account, but for serious audiophiles, the AVR-3805 represents an incredible value. More budget-conscious buyers who don't need some of the AVR-3805's obscure high-end features can opt for Denon's less dizzyingly equipped step-down model, the AVR-2805.

Editors' note: Denon Electronics will not honor the warranty on components purchased from unauthorized dealers or if the original factory serial number has been removed, defaced, or replaced. If in doubt about a particular online or brick-and-mortar retailer, call Denon at 973/396-0810.

Denon has jazzed up its conservative style, and we must say, the AVR-3805 oozes class. It weighs a hefty 37.5 pounds and measures 17.1 inches wide, 6.5 inches tall, and 16.75 inches deep. The receiver is available in black or a lovely dark silver finish.

Denon's Auto Setup feature eases setup hassles by confirming speaker phase, assessing the sizes of all of your speakers, measuring speaker-to-listener distances, and balancing speaker levels. The catch: you need to buy Denon's optional mic (or use your own compatible mic--click here for PDF) to take advantage of the Auto Setup feature. The first time we ran Auto Setup, it wasn't as accurate as the automatic leveling found on Pioneer's much less expensive VSX-D914-K. We reran the test a few times before the AVR-3805 got it right. OK, it may not be perfect, but it's much better than not doing any setup at all.

The AVR-3805's large remote deserves special mention. Other than its four buttons and centrally located cursor controls, the touch-screen remote features two large blue membranes that light up whenever you pick up the remote. Press Amp, and the remote displays receiver-related controls; press DVD, and the remote displays a full set of DVD controls such as Play, Pause, Menu, and a complete numeric key set--everything you need to operate a DVD player. (The design is similar to the contextual soft keys found on One For All's line of Kameleon universal remotes.) The remote looks really cool, but we think some buyers, especially those who prefer to navigate by touch, might prefer a standard remote with buttons.

The Denon AVR-3805 offers seven 120-watt channels and a boatload of surround processing modes, including Dolby EX and Pro Logic IIx, DTS ES, and 96/24. It also includes HDCD processing that enhances the sound of special HDCD-encoded CDs.

Extensive equalization options can help ensure your speakers sound as good as they can in your room. We're skeptical about the real-world usefulness of auto EQ (equalization) systems because they so rarely improve sound quality, but the AVR-3805's EQ did just that. The equalized sound not only produced more detail and smoother bass response, the speakers' imaging focus was sharper with the EQ turned on.

Otherwise, connectivity is on a par with separate preamplifier/processors selling for three times the price of the AVR-3805. The Denon Link offers a single-wire, all-digital hookup path for a few compatible higher-end Denon SACD/DVD-A players. That's nice, but most of us still have to run six analog cables between our SACD/DVD-A players and the receiver's 7.1 channel inputs. The receiver can upconvert your S-Video and composite inputs (from VCRs or older cable boxes, for instance) to component-video output. Other back-panel highlights include component-video switching for three sources, a turntable input, second and third zone multiroom capability, six digital audio inputs and two outputs, and an RS-232C port for use with AMX or Crestron home automation systems.

The AVR-3805 is the first receiver we've tested that offers a choice of switching between the two sets of surround speakers (the side back channels and the rear back channels) when in 5.1 mode. It's yet another customization option that audiophiles with refined tastes will appreciate (see the Performance page for more details).

And finally, we were happy to see that Denon included a group delay of up to 200 milliseconds so that you can reestablish lip sync with video displays that lag behind audio signals.

The surround-sound capabilities of this receiver are truly awe inspiring, but we started our auditions in stereo. Roseanne Cash's 10 Song Demo CD sounded pristine, with Ms. Cash's vocals and acoustic guitar holding center stage between our Dynaudio Contour speakers. The Denon AVR-3805's lush sound mimics high-end separate components.

To test the AVR-3805's surround stamina, we played Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon SACD. We felt the album's opening heartbeats before we heard them. On "Time," the clocks' ticks 'n' tocks, and various chimes and gongs filled every corner of our home theater--even the screaming lunatic's rantings were clarified by the AVR-3805's revelatory sonics.

Switching between the A side surround speakers to the B rear surrounds demonstrated the wisdom of Denon's versatility. Fact is, most of our multichannel music discs sounded better with the rear surround speakers turned on; DVD movies were better with the side surrounds in play. Of course, for those few DVDs encoded with 6.1/7.1-channel Dolby EX or DTS ES soundtracks, you can run both side and rear surround speakers. Assuming you have a room large enough to set up side and rear surround speakers, the AVR-3805 is uniquely capable of delivering the best from movies and multichannel music.

Our DVD pick, Wonderland, turned out to be an awful druggy movie about a Hollywood murder spree involving legendary porn star John Holmes. But the soundtrack was loaded with room-shaking, low-frequency effects and the drug-induced surround effects spun around our home theater. The film's physical brutality was conveyed with convincing power by the AVR-3805.

Not what I expected from Denon

Pros: Very nice AV Receiver

Cons: I own it from 2005 and had to have in Service three times already. Not what I expected from Denon. Problems with digital and optical inputs from Denon DVD Player, Samsung LCD TV, Motorola Cable box.

Review: Paid over $1000 and expected that it will last for long time but it doesn't.

The best receiver I have ever owned!

Pros: Powerful, great sound, 1 button video switching

Cons: No HDMI, Remote is a battery eater.

Review: I bought this receiver about 8 months ago and I couldn't have made a better choice for the money. It is a little pricey but compared to the flagship Denon receivers, its affordable. It even made my subpar home theater speakers sound 100 times better. I just upgraded to the Aperion tower speakers and it sounds simply amazing. I highly reccomend this receiver to anyone who is serious about their home theater. Good luck finding one though, you might have to upgrade to the newer model which does have the HDMI outputs, although, it is more expensive.

Perfect for ME.

Pros: DenonLink, Plenty of Power, great build quality, beautiful looks.

Cons: No HDMI switching. Do NOT like remote.

Review: Upon buying this unit the one thing I paid the least attention to was the remote. I mean, isn't the performance and build quality the most important things? Yes, they are and I have learned to live with the remote even though its not my favorite. I do plan on upgrading to 3rd party universal remote.

OK, the remote aside, this unit performs exceptionally well. This is the 2nd Denon receiver I've owned and it wowed me MORE than the 1st Denon receiver I've owned which was an AVR-2000 back in '93. I use 3 sets of surround speakers with this unit. I run 7.1 with 2 sets of dipole surrounds for movies. Then I have a 3rd set of surrounds that are direct firing speakers that I use for 5.1 channel Hi-resolution music via DVD-Audio and SACD. It sounds like alot but the 3805 can handle all of it. That and I'm single so no one is yelling at me for having that many speakers on the walls.LOL.

All in all this the best AV receiver I have ever owned to date. I paired this with the Denon DVD-3910 universal player which has HDMI outputs so for transferring HDMI video so it matters not that the 3805 has such inputs and outputs.

for the money a great buy

Pros: easy hook up and programming

Cons: for what I paid I can't complain

Review: I bought some new NHT VT 1.2 towers for my system. My old denon wasn't running enough juice to do them justice. I idn't want to go to seperates. I wandered into Compusa and the had the 3805 for under 700.00 and a comparable Yamaha for the a lil cheaper. I have always been a Denon or P elite fan and for less then 700.00 I picked up the 3805. My NHT now sound like they should. Talk about bang for your money. My old denon put out 80 or so watts per. what a difference. I feel bad for my neighbors.

Excellent bit of gear! Goes well with my B&W speakers.

Pros: Virtually no distortion on 6.1 well matched speakers

Cons: Manual can get a bit technical when it doesn't need to.

Review: I have found the Denon excellent to use when compared with the Harmon Kardon 5500. Far better sound quality when used with all the same peripherals. Easier to set up. Heaps better!

Great product, Bad Support

Pros: Excelent sound quality, easy set-up, lots of connections options

Cons: Bad customer support from Denon.

Review: Got this unit from Good Guys, connected it, ran auto setup, using just a regular mono microphone, not the expensive "original Denon" one, everything worked fine until I tried to switch to "Surround simulation" mode, basically playing stereo source in surround modes (like music or cinema) will create high frequency noise overlapping normal sound. Called Denon, after about 3 days trying to reach em, finally got through and was told it is a DSP (Digital Signal Processing)problem, also they said, I have to send it for factory repair (imagine hassle of sending 50 pounds unit to other end of US), they never even mentioned they actually have local service centers (I found one about 25 miles from my location) still much better when shipping it.
So now will wait for the problem to be solved.

Jameson Thottam --- Critique on Denon 2805

Pros: Jameson Thottam: Incredible sound performance, cool backlit remote.

Cons: Jameson Thottam: No set set up mike and for this price bad idea!

Review: Jameson Thottam --- Critique on Denon 2805

This Denon 3805 is a monster! I let go of a Onkyo TX-DS 797 to get to this sonic marvel. I'd heard how complicated these
recievers were and all the talk of how hard it was to understand the manuals and all that but i tell you, you have to experience one for yourself. Set mine up myself oh also not including the setup mike was in my opinion a major blunder but i did alright myself. I suppose i will have to break down and purchase one just to see how well it works.

Summary: Jameson Luke Thottam
And as far as the remote it takes some getting use to and all but it is very cool you love it or you hate it as they say i love mine! As i said i thought i had reached a certain level with my Onkyo but this Denon made a believer out of me.

Great sound

Pros: All the hookups you need

Cons: Nothing substantial

Review: This unit is packed and relatively affordable ($800 at Ideal AV). It drives my Fujitsu plasma and B&W M1 with 10" sub. I initially thought that the unit wouldn't match up to the quality of speakers but was pleasantly suprised. Clean and powerful sound. A couple of nitpicks - 1) readout on unit is cluttered and hard to decipher until oyu get used to it; 2) backlight on remote is weak during the. Overall, I would highly recommend.

PLEAE DO NOT BUY ANY PRODUCT FROM IDEALAV.COM.

Pros: Good Receiver

Cons: No warranty if you buy from unauthorized dealers

Review: I have purchased Denon 3805 receiver with Ideal AV. This receiver looks like very old and the serial number has been altered. Denon does not provide any warranty for products purchased from Ideal AV. Customer service from Ideal AV is so bad that we could not even return this product. They don't just answer the phone.

It is very dispointing right now. I don't know what to do now.

Great A/V Receiver

Pros: Stylish, Sound Quality

Cons: No internal satellite radio receiver, Functionality takes some time, Remote is kinda finicky!

Review: I've had this receiver for over a year and I am very pleased with it. My inputs are a Samsung HD receiver (fiber optic), Apple iMac Mini (analog) and Denon DVD-2910 (fiber optic and SACD/DVD-A multichannel analog). The receiver is ouput to 5 M&K LCR 750's and a Martin Logan Depth (powered) subwoofer. No major complaints ewxcept sometimes my remote illuminated borders go out.

I, too, say AWESOME!

Pros: Beautiful Sound, On screen setup, Dependable

Cons: Remote Control, Programming the receiver

Review: I've had the AVR-3805 for six months now and have hosted many parties - both audio and video. My Denon has came through for all inputs. Dolby Digital surround sound is unbeatable when the source is available. Too bad Voom Sat. TV went away. Voom, combined with my receiver, created euphoria to our eyes and ears. This receiver is definitely worth the price tag.

awesome is all I can say

Pros: more features than you can shake a stick at, great build, crisp, clean sound

Cons: same as everyone...the initial setup and remote can be tricky

Review: I have had this receiver since mid February and once I heard it in my home, my jaw dropped. I paired it up with the Kef 2005.2 "eggs" and I was astonished. Most will probably think that the 3805 is a bit overkill for those speakers, but I don't have all that much space. I also wanted a receiver that would grow with my home theater. It took me a couple of hours to even get sound or video out of the thing, but once I did, the setup wasn't too bad. I connected all of my components with Monster Ultra THX 1000 cables. I think my system rivals some of the local movie theaters for sound. The 3805 has a ton of features, some of which I'll probably never use, but once you hear it, you'll be happy that you spent the extra dough. Spend a little time learning the remote and it's functionality will be as cool as it looks. Video upconversion is pretty standard on the higher end receivers these days, but it's nice to run one set of component cables to the TV and have everything from the satellite box, dvd player, and vcr work without a bunch of switching around. This is my first Denon product and I'm so happy I plan to purchase one of their denon link compatible DVD players this fall. Hopefully blue-ray comes soon!

Denon AVR-3805 Receiver

Pros: 1)Sound quality 2)Build quality 3)versatility and number of setup options 4)Power

Cons: 1)Cost 2)Requires large amount of time to fully read instruction manual and understand how to use it to fullest capability--may be too complex for some without a lot of patience

Review: I have had this Denon AVR-3805 receiver for several full months now, and I can honestly say that it is an excellent receiver. It has great sound quality, is very versatile, and also has a very good build quality, meaning it’s chassis has a very sturdy and solid feel to it. It should last the dedicated home theater entertainment system fan a long time and provide him and his family much enjoyment for many years to come. Although the manual is long, and at times complex, and it will probably take a while to read and to digest it in order to fully learn how to use the receiver's many capabilities, that is only what is to be expected from such a deep, complex, and capable machine. And if a simpler product is needed, then one should buy a cheaper one, although then the product would not be as good in terms of sound quality. The AVR-3805 has garnered good reviews all over the Internet, including some from some of the top professional consumer hifi electronics websites on the Internet, and I can also say fully from my own personal experience with it, that most of the reviewers are correct in saying that it is an excellent machine. In trying to give you a fair overall impression of it, I can honestly say that I have tried to be open and honest in my review, and even though I have not gone into too many details about it, namely because this receiver has so many specific features and highlights and much has been said already by so many other people on the Internet that I fear that it would be redundant, suffice it to say that as many others have said before me, that it is an excellent receiver overall. I usually do not post reviews, but I have noticed a disturbing trend with many of the reviews of home theater electronics over the Internet however, and that is there seems to be a disturbing trend by many consumer reviewers towards deliberately posting bad reviews and tryinng to downgrade products from Asian companies in particular, especially about individual products that have usually gotten a high rating by professional reviewers and also have received high remarks by regular consumers. There also seems to be an attempt to downgrade products from companies that are usually very highly regarded in the industry, such as Denon or Sony. These comments are usually very cunningly disguised as objective reviews and critiques but then oftentimes expose themselves as to what they truly are and as to what their true intentions are because afterwards they are usually capped off by some suspicious screenname such as "Woody" or some other name similar to it. The comments are also sometimes very cleverly veiled with an offsetting comment or a covering comment that obscures it in order so that people do not openly figure out what they are trying ti do so that the posters won't be caught or punished, and so that they can trick people into thinking that their comment is a genuine opinion, or in the best case scenario genuine fact, and convince people of whatever they want. Also, some of the posts have very suspicious comments in them that don't sound genuine, such as a quote that I read on another Internet review website commenting about the very highly regarded Denon DVD-3910 that said "what's (chairman of Denon) going to come up with next, a $5000 DVD player that weighs 40 lbs. and plays like a $50 dollar DVD player from China?" ?huh?! What high quality, expensive DVD player plays like a $50 dollar DVD player from China? That type of comment seems kind of suspicious to me. That poster of that comment did not genuinely seem to have a good or honest motivation to say what he did, or in the right spirit. The only purpose he seemed to have was to downgrade the product after so many other consumer reviewers had praised it so highly previously. The way that you can tell some of these types of comments from the other comments is that many of the comments are so maliciously negative--the comments don’t even seem to attempt to be fair or measure the product according to objective criteria, but just seem to be designed to degrade everything and tear it down and because many of the comments are so blatantly wrong according to the spirit of right judgment. The comments sound more like bold-faced manipulations than fair or objective comments, and so then I have learned from these types of comments not to trust or to believe everything that I read on the Internet automatically, especially what I read on these Internet review websites, which are merely just opinion. And so I advise you to take some of these negative comments that you read on the Internet, (and even some of the positive ones), with a grain of salt, because there is obviously a racial motive involved in some of these comments, and so oftentimes people have some other motive in mind in saying in saying some of these things other than telling the “truth” . In my own opinion about products, I try to be fair and to not to be prejudiced for or against anyone when I judge, and then that will help me to do what's right and judge rightly and to also see the truth more clearly, that enables me to have a clear, balanced, viewpoint on reality and also prevents me from making a lot of mistakes in life. This is especially important, I feel, when I am doing this kind of stuff and giving other people opinions in order to try to help other people to form a fair, honest, balanced, and accurate viewpoint about something for themselves. I also try to judge each product as it is individually on its own merits--although the reputation of the company, its "good name" does count to me as well, I find that in the end in terms of actual real-life dealings, that it is the individual product that’s important and not necessarily its name. I find it disturbing that, while looking at the consumer reviews of certain products on many Internet opinion websites, that I have begun noticing these types of comments that I mentioned before more and more with the people who are posting trying to pass them off as their genuine “opinion”. Some of these people are "trolls", predatory people who post malicious comments posing as others just in order to trick people into doing what they want and believing whatever they want them to believe. These people obviously have some other agenda on their minds than giving a fair, decent, and impartial, view of the situation. This kind of peeves me, as I am not going to spend $1200 dollars (!!!) of my hard-earned money on a product that only seemed better than it really was because some guy wanted to promote his own racial or national agenda, and possibly miss out on the product that is really good just because I was fooled into thinking that it was bad just because someone made a false post about it just to hurt other people. These people are warping my sense of reality and leading me into bad decisions. I mean if the American company's product is good, then fine, I'll buy the American one, of course I have no problem with that, but if the Asian or other foreign company's product is good, then fine I’ll buy that one also. And don’t these people understand, if each dollar is a vote, then by buying the company's product that is a genuinely good product, then you are voting for the company and giving a yes to the company’s direction, you are rewarding the company that produces a genuinely good product and urging them to produce more of the same quality product and to continue to do the same great work. And also, by not buying the products of companies that have worse products, then you are spurring the companies whose products are not as popular with consumers and so don’t have as many sales to change their ways and to improve the products that they make so that people will want to buy them and so that they become more popular with customers and learn to make more money by satisfying the customers in a good way. Bottom line, it makes it better for everyone and customers win. Yes, I believe that patriotism is good, but only to the point where it does not become destructive to others, and not when you begin openly wronging other people like I am starting to see happen more and more on the Internet. I mean, forgive me for going off on a soapbox like this for a while, but it just makes it one step harder for me to see the truth as to which is the better product that I should buy when other people are making false and misleading posts like that for their own objectives, especially when I am going to make a big-money purchase that is over several hundred dollars at least, and then I have to go back and forth visiting all of these different review websites, and then I have to make a decision. To be almost sure but not quite sure, because of a few bad reviews here or there, some of which you suspect might or might not be false, is agonizing, especially over a purchase that costs a lot of money, because you want to make sure you make the right decision. This is hard even for a product that you know is reasonably good because most people have given good reviews about it, much less for a product in a category in which there is no clear favorite. And although it is wrong to assume that other people are making false posts for the purpose of trying to manipulate other people for their own selfish reasons without really knowing for sure, and to possibly risk becoming cynical, some of the behavior that I have seen on the Internet has made me suspicious, and you see more and more of it lately, so I hope that you are cautious and that you take my advice for what it's worth. And for those of you who think that I am just defending the Denon AVR-3805, then I suggest that you look at the reviews of it on the Internet, I think that if you use that reasoning, that a lot of people are defending the Denon AVR-3805. Besides, I am not so much quite defending Denon or even the AVR-3805, as I am defending anyone who does a good quality job, does it well, and is proven to be a creative innovator, and my right to make a quality, informed, accurate decision, without anyone trying to trick me into his or her own objectives. This particular receiver, the AVR-3805 got good reviews all over the Internet, both from professional reviewers and from individual consumers all over the Internet. I mean as for my part, although I own it, I am not attached to it, and it stands on its own merits. I mean what more can I say, I don’t need to defend the Denon, I think the reviews speak for themselves. The proof is in the pudding,as they say. But my advice for any of you out there who are seriously looking for any advice and any help on hifi consumer electronics products is to visit the many excellent websites there are on the Internet. There are several good websites along with this one that would help you greatly, such as "audioreview.com", and also "ecoustics.com". Ecoustics in particular has an excellent compilation of professional reviews from all over the Web as well as a listing of a particular product’s rating that was given from several consumer review websites and links to those websites as well. You might even want to try professional hifi magazines’ websites such as“hometheaterhifi.com”, “stereophile.com”, and “theperfectvision.com”, just to name a few. They oftentimes have reviews of different home theater components that they’ve evaluated in the past posted on their websites that are free for the general public to do research on and to browse through. Though, in order to find out what what they thought were the best components in each specific category for that particular year, you might have to pay a little extra money in order to download their Best of…(insert the year that you want here)” lists onto your hard drive and to be able to open them up and to read what they say, since that is how they usually distribute their lists. And although most of these magazine’s editors oftentimes do not have the luxury of using a product for a long period of time such as several months, these reviewers are usually experts in their field, and they oftentimes have seen and reviewed many different products of several competing companies, so they might be able to have a better chance at telling you just which product happens to be the best product in its particular category. You might even want to try audio/video hifi forums and message boards on the Internet in order to ask people there advice about certain particular products. One of the most famous is the AVS Forum at “avsforum.com”, an excellent audio/video forum, one of the largest ones on the Internet, where the people are passionate about the subject, knowledgable, and very informed, though not always helpful or friendly, especially towards beeginners, although you can learn a lot just by obseving and listening. Though as always, I’d suggest that you remember that, as knowledgable as some of those people are, their responses are just opinions, and that you should be cautious and take their opinions with a grain of salt. Do your research before you buy, and preferably if you can and if the option is available to you, do some good old–fashioned legwork as well as your homework, and go into a store, look at the product that you are interested in, if it’s possible listen to what it sounds like, and as always, try to “try before you buy” before you bring it home, especially if it is an expensive purchase. It is always best to gain your own personal experience with a subject before you pronounce judgment on it regardless of what other people might say, that will oftentimes prevent you from making a mistake, and try to buy from a retail store or a mail-order company with a good return policy, so that if you do make a mistake, it can easily be rectified, even if that means that you might have to pay a little more to buy from a reputable dealer with a tolerant return policy. That will give you great peace-of-mind and save you from a lot of heartache in life. These are the lessons that I have learned in all of my many years of buying audio/video equipment, believe me I have learned these lessons from many many mistakes over the years and oftentimes at high price, so be wise and learn these lessons from me for free before you suffer any more pain in your life. Experience is always a hard teacher because she gives the pain first and then the lesson afterwards, but if you follow this hardearned and tried-and-true advice in life, then you might just be able to gain all the benefits of experience without all of the suffering and all of the hardships that wisdom uses to teach you. Well, I hope my review has been helpful to all of you people seeking audio/video advice, may you all make wise decisions. Good luck to all of you.

Instant Home Theatre Upgrade

Pros: Fantastic sound reproduction. All the hookups you'll ever need. Versatile setup. Well made!

Cons: Not for the faint of heart, setup can be a little tricky. Pricey A/V component, but well worth it for anyone looking to make an instant upgrade to their home theatre.

Review: The 3805 was actually my second Denon purchase. My first being the 2200 DVD player. One thing I can say about Denon is that they are without a doubt on the cutting edge of technology.

The 3805 is a remarkable piece of equipment. When I purchased it, I planned to pair it with a complete top of the line Polk speaker system. I realized the speakers were much to large in size for the area I was planning on using them and "settled" for the Bose Acoustimass 15 speaker set.

The sound reproduction was (is) absolutely incredible. I truly think you could hook-up homemade speakers to the 3805 and you would have great results.

The 3805 has an incredbible selection of hookups...optical, RCA, component video, composite video, S-Video and the Denon Link (proprietary). It can be adapted to fit 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 speaker formats. The major decoders are built in (DTS and Dolby) with multiple formats for both.

The only issue I had with the 3805 is the setup. It can be a little tricky setting which connections you want to go with the presets (TV, DVD, VDP etc.). Beyond that I had nothing but bliss watching movies and playing X-Box.

If you're in the market for an affordable high-end INSTANT upgrade to your existing home theatre, this is a no brainer.

For $1,000, I have an AV receiver to last me a long, long time!

Pros: auto-setup, great 5.1/7.1 surround sound

Cons: Ah, that learning curve thing, again!

Review: For $1,000 from Sound Exchange in Somerville, NJ; I've got a surround sound receiver to grow old with (I am kind of old already). And I didn't realize how good this receiver was, until I dragged-out my 1985 Genesis 44s (speakers) from the mothballs yesterday. I could not stop listening to some old, cherished cds I haven't heard in at least 10 years. WOW! And with my Denon 2910, Klipshes, velodyne and DVDs, the sound just flows around my den. How rewarding is it to know that your investment will remain well worthwhile-for years to come. Very.

Outstanding features and performace.

Pros: Auto Parametric Equalizer is "The Bomb"

Cons: Owners Manual Needs the "3805 for dummies" version

Review: The listening room is the component everyone forgets about. Even if a Rotel receiver's amp sounds a little better, it won't beat the Denon in the end because the Rotel can't do anything about the room acoustics or a speaker's characteristics. When you add this fact in--GAME OVER. You'll never be able to get the most out of your speakers or your room without Auto-EQ. The guess work is over. Even if you prefer to set your own EQ setting, the auto-equalizer will give you a better idea of how to procede. The difference without the equalizer is stunning. This is the future. I think this Denon 3805 is absolutely matchless in every way. What a bargin. Built like a tank.

I've owned the 3805 for a little over a year and boy did I find something out! Are you ready folks? The "Mode" button on the front lower left-side panel holds a key. When you push this button in succession you get 3 choices: 1)"PCM", 2)"AUTO", and 3)"DTS".

Well, not wanting to set this button manually everytime I move from a DVD to a cd, I had the setting set on "Auto" so that the receiver would auto-detect the correct input format on it's own. Then one day I was messing around with the 3805's front panel settings while a regular CD was playing on my DVD player. When I changed the input "mode" button from "AUTO" to "PCM" the sound instantly improved. The dynamics, transparency, and soundstaging all opened up and I was listening to my equipment in all it's splendor for the first time! I couldn't believe what I was missing for the last year or so.

Apparently, the input signal when set to "Auto" has to go through some extra circuitry that seriously degrades the sound. My advice is don't be lazy, get off your chair and set this manually to the needed input mode each time you change from DVD to CD. Please let me know if others discover this.

Powerful Crisp Sound

Pros: Easy setup, 3 Component inputs, powerful crisp audio

Cons: remote a little hard to use at first

Review: I've been a Yamaha consumer for the longest time, but I've finally decided on a Denon this time. After going through the auto setup with the optional mic, my jaw dropped. My once so so home theater setup sounds so much better than before. I could hear sounds that I never heard before. For example, I was auditioning a piano concert and I actually heard someone cough in the audience. I'm going to have to watch all my movies again with the new Denon AVR-3805. Thanks Denon for providing me with an audiophile receiver/amp at a reasonable price.

Monster home theater performance

Pros: Great sound, tremendous features, well built, and auto set up

Cons: Terrible remote

Review: I purchased the receiver from Tweeter for $1130.00 with the microphone included. I am using paradigm monitor 7 and mini monitors in a 7.1 set up. The sound is phenomenal. It took a while to get used to the operation of the unit, but once the learning curve was obtained everything was great. I have yet to use all options and functions. Do yourself a favor, buy this receiver!

For audiophiles, the best there is

Pros: Incredible sound quality, full bass, bold midrange and tight (never peaking) trebles. Amazing list of digital decoders, substantial power, includes DTS Neo:6, plenty of optical/coaxial digital inputs.

Cons: Super-suave remote has an extremely steep learning curve. Initially it is hard to use, but after a while it wasn't that bad.

Review: If you are an audiophile looking for something with outstanding sound over more than just two chanels, without spending $10,000 for something like a Mark Levinson system, go with Denon. Might I suggest a set of Aperion Speakers? I have them and the sound quality can't be beat.

Way to go Denon!

Pros: Amazing feature set for the price, clean conservatively rated power supply.

Cons: The remote, what were they thinking?

Review: To fully appreciate this receiver, you need some patience and some time. If you have both, you will be well rewarded. I upgraded from a high end but outdated B & K av processor, with separate amps...which sounded very good but had limited input types (i.e., S and composite video only, coax dig audeio only, etc.). After the setup on the 3805 was complete (I did a manual setup with a SPL meter), even my wife noticed the difference. I love the 3805! My only quibble with this receiver is the remote, very kludgy.

It takes a m week or two, but they wait & learning curve are worth it !

Pros: Auto setup, make sure your speakers are matched or you never get the correct sound

Cons: Documentaion and manuals are basic.

Review: My first two weeks I was waiting for center channel speaker to arrive on backorder. I could never get the Denon 3805 to right. But when my Defintive Tech CLR 2500 arrived I hooked it up, drug out that microphone again and poof, the low range blended. I might add by this time I was getting quite familiar with all the options the 3805 had to offer. It seems to me that if a Reciever dose'nt have enough two months later I feel like I've under bought two many features as we are seeing today has a learning curve. Now 3 months later I very happy with 3805 and I really have'nt been a Denon fan for over 10 years. Today I have no regrets Dollar for dollar I feel like this was a solid deal and would recomend it to any one in the $1000 price range.

A formidable cornerstone of a quality AV system

Pros: Auto-setup does good (not quite perfect) job of correcting acoustic limitations of speakers/rooms. Excellent sonic clarity. Very flexible and configurable. Ample power and negligible distortion.

great AV system

Pros: This was an upgrade from AVR-1600. Kind of like going from a Ford Escort to a Ford GT-40. Unbelievable sound. Beautiful video handling. Enough inputs in the back to plug everything into the AV unit. Makes my Paradigm speakers sound great.

Cons: The remote is a joke. Whoever thought that this was the right direction must have been sniffing new plastic or something. Membrane covered push buttons went out in the 70s. With daily use, there'll probably be a hole in the amp spot within six months.
