"Piece of Garbage" on by russboyslim
Pros: When it works it sounds sweet, relatively easy set up...
Cons: Needs HDMI and Optical to get audio and video. Awful tech support. Awful customer service. Known to be defective.
Summary: I bought mine in Dec. 2008...have only used it twice. After setting up Audessy to optimize sound the speakers started crackling and popping like Rice Crispies, and then they stopped working completely. I took it to an authorized service center, they determined the DSP board was bad (processes digital audio) and had to send it back to Denon to be repaired. Denon said that the unit was fine and nothing was wrong? OK...so I set it all back up, ran Audessy again...same result. Now I'm going to get into a war with Denon to replace the thing or actually fix it. If they say nothing is wrong, then the unit must be defective. If I did it again, I would buy a different brand and probably spend a little more money to not deal with the headaches. It literally worked one evening when I got it back from Denon and then was broken again. Don't buy it, save yourself the hassle!!!!!!!!!

"Reasonable Priced, Good Looks, Decent Performance!" on by Typicalb18
Pros: Premium Looks, Decent Power Output, Easy To Use Remote, HDMI Compatible, Many Inputs, Denon Quality
Cons: HDMI Setup Somewhat Confusing, Could be priced a little bit lower, Power Output could also be improved, Audyssey Auto Calibrating system useless like any other Auto System
Summary: So currently this AVR-589 Powers my Polk Audio RTi8s, RTi4s & a Klipsch KSW 100. I have it hooked up to my Playstation 3 with a single Optical Cable as I found the HDMI too hard to configure and to get it working correctly. It does perfectly fine with power and sound distribution which I am satisfied with for a receiver at this price range, but it could also be better. The Remote is stylish and very easy to use so no problems there. It has a very nice build closer to their higher end models which I like. As of today Denon does have similar models for the same price but look very basic and cheap in my opinion. Their Audyssey system didn't perform very well in my opinion as I always like to adjust manually, and this just doesn't only go for Denon but for every brand out there with a Auto Calibrating System
So Overall it does very decent for the price. It's sounds & looks good. I don't see what could be wrong with it. It's worth the buy especially if you find it for cheap! -
"Great while it worked." on by rjmohun
Pros: Set up was easy, sounded great.
Cons: After 6 months it started shutting itself down after being on for about 30 min., then again after about 10 min., then every couple of minutes. Bought it at Circuit City and then they went belly up so couldnt return it though it was under warranty.
Summary: Got it as part of a deal with the Boston Acoustics speakers...not much of deal since it only lasted 6 months.

"Great Receiver!" on by bill83c4
Pros: Powerful wattage with more than enough power for your home theater. Bought this with a package containing Boston Acousitcs speakers w/ powered sub for $500. Great deal when the receiver itself sells for $300 itself.
Cons: Ipod dock is not included and costs greater than 150 although it does contain a Wifi connection to setup listening from your laptop wireless.
Summary: Works great whether listening to a blu-ray, cable, or music. I wouldn't bother paying up for a receiver using Dolby True-HD as blu-rays aren't even being processed in this format yet. This processes in DTS and Dolby-Digital which is what the majority of movies are being processed with.
