"The Best budget receiver"
Pros: Best sounding receiver in this price range. Haslossless audio and all the new built in audio decoders you can ask for, can upscale analog sources to 1080p , attractive appearance, and again the sound.
Cons: Horrible manual booklet, the remote that came with the unit is horribly designed with a very cheap look that doesn't match the attractiveness of the receiver.
Summary: This is going to be the best budget receiver for you dollar if you want lossless audio and all the latest built in audio decoders. This is by far the best sounding receiver in it's price range. I think it is an injustice to compare this to the Onkyo 606, because this receiver will blow it away in terms of sound. I didn't care that it had one less HDMI input than that Onkyo, I cared more about the sound. You are gettind Denon quality sound with this budget receiver.
The on-screen set up is a little confusing at first. HOWEVER, if you play around with it for a few minutes, setting up really becomes a breeze. I think the difficulty of setting this and the 1909 has been over-exaggerated. Yes, the manual is useless once it tells you how to get to the on-screen set-up. That was my only grip, the manual does not help at all.
Please make sure that your HDMI cables are working correctly. I did have problems while setting up. At first I would only get sound and no video. Then video and no sound. After researching online, calling tech support, and playing around with the setup which all resulted with no solutions, I went out on the limb and bought all brand new HDMI cables. What do you know, everything ended up working flawlessly. There was no issues with the way I was setting up the system. If you use HDMI for the majority of your equipment, set up is even easier.
The Audyssey MultEQ set up is a breeze. It accurately sets up your speaker and subwoofer levels. Once you have all your inputs, speakers, personal settings set up; go buy a Logitec Harmony universal remote.
I have my Motorola HD/DVR cable box and PS3 connected to the 789 via HDMI and only one cord going to the TV. I have just recently upgraded my Bose set up to the Polk Audio RTi A series. Great picture and great sound. My movies sound more alive and the games now make me feel I am actually in it at times. The Denon really pairs well with the PS3. I have heard many problems with the Onkyo when it comes to connecting it with the PS3.
If you want a budget receiver that is going to be future proof, last you for a long time, and produces great sound; than buy the Denon AVR 789. Oh and one last thing, this receiver does not heat up a lot; it is at a very minimum.
