""CAVEAT EMPTOR" I can't stress this enough! HDMI/HDCP will not work with cable"

    by dude2063 on April 30, 2006

Pros: Slim design, plenty of power for small to large room.

Cons: HDMI/HDCP won't work w/a Motorola DCT 6412 III Dual Tuner DVR/HDTV Capable receiver supplied from Cox Cable, Insturction manual very vague, unit runs on the warm to hot side.

Summary: If your wanting to strictly go HDMI using a DVD player and HD/DVR capable cable tuner to your HD TV it "WILL NOT WORK"!!! I've just spent my whole Saturday back and forth with Tech Support from JVC and COX cable to no avail. I basically got the finger pointing as to who's product was causing the problem. Cox's tech support did everything but cuss at me while trying to resolve my problem. I was nothing but polite and nice until she got pissy with me! I was told the HDMI part of the cable tuner wasn't activated. If that was the case then why did the HDMI output of the cable tuner work when connected to the HDMI 1 input on my Plasma? The problem was when the JVC RX-D401S was introduced into the equation. After connecting the Plasma HDMI 1 out to the JVC monitor input and then the Motorola Cable box HDMI output to the JVC VHS/DBS input I would get a picture/full sound for approx 10 secs and then a pop up that reads "The set-top does not support HD Content Protected Repeaters. Please use YPbPr outputs for your HD Connection". The Motorola DCT 6412 III Dual Tuner DVR/HDTV Capable Receiver supplied from Cox Cable isn't compatable w/the JVC RX-D401S, so I was told. I even got the same results using the Component connections which defeats the purpose of buying all HDMI!!!!! To Blu-Ray and Toshiba, please do your homework before releasing "CRAP" to the consumers!
Let me regretfully add that the HDMI connection from the DVD/DVR of the JVC to the DVD changer does work flawlessly, but now that I have to use both HDMI inputs on my Plasma I won't have a way to connect my HD DVD player when purchased!
    Updated
Cox isn't the problem. JVC is. Here is the update. The JVC RX-D401S and the 402B need the HDMI upgrade to be able to use a cable receiver or @ least my cable receiver. My unit was purchased 03.29.06 and should have been HDCP compliant according to the FCC! July 1st 05 was the date. As a result, JVC instructed me to send the unit back to an authorized dealer to have the HDMI upgrade, under warranty. Shipping is @ my expense which I didn't agree with since it should have been compliant!!! I sent the unit today and they will receive it NLT 1500 02 May 06! Now comes the waiting game I'm sure. JVC's tech support estimated turnaround time was 1-2 weeks. Word of advise, don't talk to any tech support on a weekend, wait until a week day between normal business hrs. The compentent employees work these hours!!!
    Updated
JVC received my unit at 11:13 am on May 02, 2006 in LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. It was shipped from Oklahoma at 11:05 am May 01 2006.
    Updated
I received a call from the JVC technician who was working on my unit on 05.10.06. He informed me that the unit was incompatible with the Motorola cable receiver.
Long story short. I paid $60.00 to have it overnighted and was told over the phone a week later that the unit was incompatible with the cable receiver. No HDMI upgrade necessary, it was up to date!
If you have a Motorola cable tuner it WILL NOT WORK via HDMI through ANY stereo receiver as of right now!!!!!!
I emailed Motorola about this issue and that is what I was told. Let me add they don't have a date as to when the update will take place allowing the conn. via HDMI.

I am in the process of switching to Dish Network. Their tech support can't answer whether or not their equipment will work through a stereo receiver via HDMI.

    ***?

As to JVC I apologize for the earlier comments but not after taking $60.00 more of my money.
Cox Cable is a rip off compared to Dish Network!

    Over and out.

I found this out as well. I did some research online and determined that my Motorola 3412 DVR box from Comcast was the issue. It only has HDMI version 1.0 and so any attempts to use a receiver or HDMI switcher will prove useless since the DVR box will identify them as HDMI extenders. You have to send the signal directly to the tv via HDMI. I'm hoping there will be a firmware upgrade for the DVR box that will address this in the future.

Oddly enough, I also got an AIW X1900 video card and it will also not allow the passthrough via my HDMI switcher. I do have a X800 XT video card on another PC that does though, so it's really hit or miss with this HDMI/DVI stuff.

The menu system on this receiver needs some serious work. Setup and changing options on my previous Onkyo receiver was a breeze compared to the JVC Unit. Manual could be much better as well. The unit should also have one more digital audio connnection.

Hey, thanks for this report from the trenches. Seems like the compatibility issues is a big problem across the different manufacturers. I think I'll hold off from getting a HDMI receiver until the problems are fully fixed. 2007 seems like the better time to get one of these babies.

    Dude-
What model is the Motorola cable box that you are talking about? I have a Motorola cable box for Comcast that connects to my TV via HDMI w/o a problem. I am thinking of getting this reciver, and want to know if it will work.

First off, JVC tech support is worthless. You probably know more about your receiver then they do. Second, do a few searches on the net and you will find that there are a few cable boxes that have this problem and the will not work with any HDMI repeater, JVC or otherwise. I would be interested to see what happens and I hope JVC fixes the problem. But, I think the problem is with the cable box and JVC does not know enough about the problem, so they just assume it's their fault and ask for the unit to be sent in for repair. I have the same JVC receiver, in fact it is an older model and it has worked with HDMI/HDCP handshaking with DirecTV flawlessly since day one.
