    "An excellent receiver"

by VTNomad on November 10, 2005

Pros: Excellent sound, 2 HDMI inputs, HDMI upconversion, 1 cable connection to TV

Cons: Too few inputs, no coaxial input

Summary: This receiver has the ability to upconvert composite, S-video, and component inputs to HDMI. Unfortunately the inputs (DBS/VCR & DVD/DVR) cancel out all similar inputs. For example, if you plug your DVD player into the DVD/DVR HDMI input, you cannot use the DVD/DVR component input, or S-video and composite inputs for that matter. Esentially it has 3 digital audio (2 optical and 1 digital coax) and 2 video inputs DVD/DVR (HDMI, component, s-video, composite) & VCR/DBS (HDMI, component, s-video, composite).

If you use only composite or s-video for inputs it separates the dvd & dvr and dbs & vcr, allowing 4 devices to be used. Those inputs would then be upconverted to HDMI. There is a very minimal loss in picture quality during the conversion. I didn't like it because it didn't allow me to set the zoom level of my choice.

I would recommend this receiver for those who have a HDTV, but do not have HD components and cables. I alreasy had an HDTV, HD cable box, an upconversion DVD player, a component connection for my PS2 and HDMI and component cables. I would not recommend it for users with this set up.

Thankfully my TV had 2 HDMI inputs and I have a Harmony remote. I have all my video information going to the TV and all the audio to the receiver. The remote brings it all together and lets me pick the source with the push of a button.

You have 3 video inputs, HDMI or comp for the DVD/DVR, and HDMI/Comp for the VCR and DBS. What ever input the VCR is using, the DBS uses the other. For example, set VCR to component and DBS to HDMI, that's 2 seperate video inputs with the third being the DVD/DVR over any of the following; comp, hdmi, s-video, c.
