"I'd wait longer to get HDMI switching"

    by stangboy68 on November 9, 2005

Pros: Good sound, inexpensive, great features

Cons: Heat, poorly written manual, HDMI switching

Summary: I had the slightly less powerful D402 but there essentially the same. It was a great receiver except for one thing, the HDMI switching feature was useless. It would work just fine with my HDMI DVD player, but when it came time to use my cable box it didn't work. Apparently the HDCP handshake couldnt take place and the picture would go black after a few seconds. This seems to be a problem with many HDMI receivers out there. Its a pity because its my cable boxes fault. I would stay away from these types of receivers until these cable boxes will work with them.

What type of cable box are you using?

This user relies on his experience with another model. Similar though it may be,it is still a step down from the receiver in question.

I had the same problem with HDMI input from my cable box. I gave up and used component. I thought my receiver was defective. The manual is pretty bad. It took an hour of fiddling to discover how to assign the DBS source to the correct input (component). The JVC help desk was no help.
Once figured out, the receiver is excellent. If it were closer to my listening position it would also make an excellent foot warmer!

Unfortunately the cable boxes will probably never work with them. Its the cable box that improperly implemented the HDMI standard. New receivers aren't going to implement a "hack" to be compatible with older cable boxes.
