Pros Right away after I had set up the Audyssey 2EQ I noticed how clean and warm this receiver sounded compared to others I have heard. The sound was identical to the ONKYO TX-SR608, which happens to be a THX certified receiver.
Cons When I switch between movies and music, I find I need to adjust the subwoofer from -7 to 0 db. Luckily I can do this with the remote, but it would be nice if the listening modes remembered my last speaker level settings.
Summary I'm not to sure how quick they slapped the video review of this receiver up, because this receiver does have standby HDMI pass-through. Now if they missed that little feature I'm wondering if maybe the video review forgot to run the Audyssey 2EQ, which would explain why they thought the audio was lacking. I find it hard to believe a receiver that's using the same guts as a THX certified receiver can be knocked down a notch for audio quality.
Pros Good sound (after setup). Running it as 7.1 and have not explored alternate speaker placements. Less noticeable spatial gimmicks with sound stage.
Cons Occasional power up issue with connection to the TV failing. Power sequence is cable box, receiver, tv. If I power down the receiver and power up again it works fine. (every 10th powerup)
Summary Quite satisfied overall. Recommend getting banana plugs for speaker connections as they are tightly spaced. Great improvement over my previous Yamaha Rx-V595 that went 5.1 to 3.1 to 2.0.... Occasional problems with interpretation of 5.1 audio in sports broadcasts, ie center image goes wide. Could be the broadcast.
"Huge upgrade!"on by HueJJass
Pros clarity, power, crisp, 3D, just awesome sound!
A ton of media inputs (both old school and high tech).
Easy user interface.
Cons Base speaker feet are hard plastic. So, when it's really turned up the speaker created the slightest noise. I put furniture pads under the feet, and it's all fixed.
generic speaker stands may not fit.
Summary I am stepping up from a small two speaker system that had 1 RCA input. So admittedly, I'm easy to impress; however, this system has exceeded my expectations. I bought it because I wanted to upgrade my stereo ... and upgrade I did: clarity, power, crisp, 3D, just awesome sound!
In addition to the sound upgrade, the systems has de-cluttered my wiring because now everything just plugs into it, and I've got one wire running up to my TV! I used to have to use 4 remotes, but i'm down to two now. And if my TV weren't such an off the beaten path TV, I'd be down to 1!!!
Pros Clean crisp sound; easy to set up; good intuitive remote ; extensive list of features for the money
Cons Runs a bit hot; Instruction manual confusing in parts,
Summary Not sure why this is getting mediocre reviews here- This is an excellent receiver with superb sound. I have been using this for 3 months with TV, Blu-ray with internet , CD player, and Ipod and getting excellent results with all sources. The list of features far exceed any other receivers I have seen in this price range. The initial set up was easy and intuitive (connections, programming the remote, speaker configuration) but as with all complex electronics be prepared for a learning curve on the advanced features. The manual does a decent job but it is difficult to follow in parts. The Audyssey function which automatically configures the speakers to the room and distance to the listener was simple to use and worked great . Unlike others i have had no problem with the HDMI pass-through. All in all very happy with this purchase.
Pros Price and features as stated, reliable Amazon service
Cons This is my 3rd Onkyo. Unlike the old ones, I spent a day and still can't finish the set up. No pass through even HDMI is set to "through" , or get the sound quality equal to my old Amp. User doc poorly organized. Frequent error codes unexplained.
Summary I am going to call Onkyo and give it a few more tries - sitting on the fence if I should return it.One call to Onkyo support and pass through problem solved. Just set up Hardware>HDMI to on. It is in user manual p.45. The sound quality improves a little after I reset the Audissy. I will change this review to 4 stars.
