    "Power House" on by JakeSlade

Pros: Great features and input variety

Cons: Customer service was not of much use.

Summary: Things weren't perfect out of the box. There was a problem with my Samsung HL-S6187W displaying the HDMI output correctly. Calling Onkyo customer service was an exercise in futility. The person I spoke to eventually said that he didn't know what to do.

It turned out that the on-screen menu was the hang-up. If I want to view that, I have to turn off the HDMI output and use a composite video output.

The unit has more features than you can shake a stick at. Output of sound and video is outstanding.

I have the following connected to it.

The aforementioned Samsung 61" DLP HDTV

    Dish Network HD DVR (HDMI)
    Sony Up-Convert DVD player (HDMI)
XBOX 360 (component video - optical digital audio)
Wii (composite video and analog audio)
Pioneer CD player (optical digital audio)
Onkyo iPod dock (composite video and analog audio)

Output goes to a 6.1 system made up of speakers from Aperion Audio.

    The system is pretty killer.

Auto detection and switching of valid surround sound modes for each source works great.

Everything that I have plugged into it displays through a single HDMI output going to my TV. The sole exception is the on-screen menu from the receiver.

The unit is heavy. You have read this before. If you buy one and pick it up you will still find yourself saying, "Dang. This thing is heavy."

It also gets hot. You have read this too. Same as above.

I have a fan blowing on mine when I am gaming or listening to things that are, shall we say, not subtle. This may be unnecessary. But it makes me feel better.

    I love this thing.

I did opt to round-out the system with a Logitech Harmony 890 remote. Moving from one activity to the other is much easier now. I can even use all the functions of my DVR using this remote.

"This TX-SR805 Rocks!!!" on by jacgat55

Pros: Clean, clear and accurate power at an affordable price.

    Cons: Requires forgiving neighbors.

Summary: I have owned the TX-SR805 for about 2 months and it drives 8 Aperion speakers in a 7.1 setup. The power sent to the speakers is clean, clear and accurate at all volumes.

The 805 is big and heavy weighing 51lbs and just fits flush in my audio stand.

The OSD Setup, although not all that fancy, is extremely versatile. You can adjust the output of your speakers to suit your personal taste with Configuration, Distance, and Level calibration for each speaker and a 7-band equalizer for each channel.

There is an A/V Sync control for each input source, which when properly set, compensates for sources that may exhibit Lip-Sync problems. Since I read the post that rates the 805 at a 1 of 10, I tested it myself with the TV test and my acoustic guitar with a Dean Markley pickup input to AUX 1. You definitely can create a delay up to 250ms for each input source, which is really noticeable. At 0 ms delay the 805 sounds like my Ampeg amp when playing guitar and at 0ms delay and the TV speakers and Aperion’s are synchronized.

The remote is very functional in that it can learn commands, control components by inputting Mfr. Codes and create macro’s that can turn on all of my devices.

Overall, I should have rated the 805 a “10” to offset that abysmal “1” post but I will give it an honest “9”.

For the price, the THX Ultra2 130 WPC certified power and the fact that it has brought my Aperion’s to life; I would highly recommend the TX-SR805.

"Awsome power Next Gen audio" on by powerserg

Pros: Multi. Audio config. Looks great

Cons: Hotter then the SUN! Need lots of breathing room.

Summary: I hook this baby up to a SONY XBR2 60" (HDMI), I connected a PS3 (HDMI), a satellite Dish network HD receiver (HDMI), Bose 5.1 speakers system. Took approximately 1 hr. to set up that's including calibrating the speakers (KooL). This thing sounds great....... I've got lots more to learn, the instructions book is fairly good size and their is much more to do. I played the movie Ghost Rider (Blue Ray)it detected the HD audio automatically. So far so good. Sound is great I must say compared to my old Kenwood that I bought 6 years ago. I will say medium to large learning curve if you don't stay current with audio times. It is very heavy indeed, and required lots of room to breath, because it does create lots of heat. One other thing I noticed this morning was setting up the remote. I'm used to the Dish Network remote turning off and on the TV and satellite. Now I have this large Onkyo remote that I'm able to turn off and on all my equipment except the PS3 of course, but I'm unable to use the guide function that we all use on the satellite. I will have more updates as I continue to learn more, but overall I'm impressed. It cost and arm and a leg but I wanted to get the most from my PS3. later.

"Don't do it....read my review if you're thinking Onkyo" on by barry.springer

    Pros: Great when it worked

    Cons: Didn't work for long

Summary: Actual letter sent to Attorney General's office in NJ and PA. Also forwarded to BBB and FTC.

    Hello,

I have a problem and don't know where to turn. I hope you can help me?

I purchased an Onkyo Stereo TX-SR805 from Circuit City retailer here in Reading Pa. in Aug 07. As part of the original purchase, I paid for a 5 year warranty as well. 3 weeks later the stereo unit stopped working (Not dropped or damaged - it just quit). I called Circuit City and it was just outside the window of return to CC for a replacement - I was encouraged to use my 5 year warranty through Onkyo. So, I contacted Onkyo who explained that one of their "certified" repair centers must inspect the unit first to determine if it can be repaired or replaced. They provided the contact info of a local repair center in Philadelphia. I called that service center who told me that they no longer accept any Onkyo products for repair. I called Onkyo back and they said its not they're problem - the issue is between that repair shop and me. I begged the customer service manager to intervene on my part. He capitulated - to make a long story short - that shop was never removed from their approved service repair shop listing. So with many apologies, Onkyo put me onto another of their repair centers (Audio Video Repair on S. Columbus Blvd in Philadelphia). My responsibility to get the unit there - so I drove it there directly. After 3 months of following up with that repair center, it was still not fixed. George the repair center manager told me to contact Onkyo to find out why they weren't sending the needed parts for repair. So, I followed up with Onkyo. Onkyo stated that they're having difficulty getting necessary parts - so to expedite, they (Onkyo) would send an entire circuit panel to the repair shop. Great! Now its Jan 08, and I still do not have a stereo back. So I follow up: Repair center says they never received it. Onkyo claims they sent it. Back and forth. Eventually a very nice customer service employee at Onkyo (Felicia) investigated on my behalf. Apparently (According to Felicia) she found that the part was indeed shipped to the repair center, installed, yet the unit still didn't work and the tech at the repair center didn't know what to do. Felicia organized getting my unit shipped to Onkyo's "regional" repair center in NYC where it could be fixed properly. Great! A couple of weeks later, Felicia calls me to tell me that the Regional center received the unit but it was damaged in transit (front faceplate) and that (Fed Ex/ UPS) was investigating before it can turned over to the regional repair center. Great! Now it is Feb 21 08. I called Felicia to get an update. Felicia informs me that Onkyo is no longer responsible for the unit/ parts/ etc. Their position is that its my problem to be dealt with between repair shop #1 and repair shop #2 (regional center) Onkyo states that whenever the regional center receives the parts/ compensation for the damage done in transit, that the Regional center will be more than happy to finish repairing the unit and ship it back to me. My position is that I paid for a 5 year warranty in good faith and I expect the manufacture to honor their commitment to that agreement, which unfortunately they aren't doing.

Fact: Onkyo required me to send the unit to their repair center or they would not honor the warranty.

Fact: Onkyo organized getting the unit shipped between repair centers and never required any accountability on my part for the liability of the shipping.

The unit retail cost was $1,100, and I cannot afford an attorney to fight Onkyo or whomever they think I should be fighting.

Just to vent, I asked Felicia to provide me the contact information of their legal department. I was put in contact with Jack Cooper who identified himself as the regional Customer Service Manager. He refused to provide any other contact information only providing his email address:

    j.cooper@usonkyo.com

And he provided the 201-785-2629 number but admitted that he will never take any calls like this because that’s just their policy.

Do I have any recourse or am I screwed?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
