"Great receiver with plenty of power to spare."
Pros: -Tons of power
-Only 1 HDMI cable connects everything to your TV
-Automatic speaker calibration is excellent
-Outstanding performance for the priceCons: -Video conversion from component->HDMI has problems
Summary: First of all, I really love this receiver. I bought it to connect my Xbox 360, DVR, and Blue-Ray player to my 52'' Samsung LCD, and to power my Aperion speaker system (6T fronts, 5C center, 4T surrounds, 12D sub).
As far as audio goes I have absolutely nothing but praise for the 876. The sound quality is excellent, and the Audyssey auto-setup worked great to calibrate my system. After running Audysey, I measured the distances to each speaker to double-check them, and each distance was correct to within +/- 6 inches. At 140 watts per channel this receiver effortlessly drives my power hungry Aperion speakers.
The biggest factor that led me to choose this onkyo over other receivers was the video upconversion. I have a legacy xbox 360 with component cables, so I wanted a receiver that could do a great job with audio and also upconvert the component video to HDMI. The 876 can do this, and the quality is great, however I did have some problems with flickering after the Xbox had been connected for an hour or two. Basically the screen would either turn black for a second, or it would flicker on/off. I assume that this is something relating to overheating since it only ever happened after the Xbox had been connected for a while, and never happened while watching TV or Blu-Ray (by the way, this was a problem with the receiver, not the Xbox which I've had for several years). I solved the problem by connecting the Xbox with a VGA cable to the TV, which was a compromise but not the end of the world.
Overall, I would recommend this receiver to anyone who needs high quality video upconversion or a lot of power (I got it for $990 in Jan 09). Its a great receiver, with only 1 problem that I've seen. However I would also remind you that if your speakers don't demand a lot of power, or you don't need high quality video upconversion, then you are betting off buying a smaller receiver for less cash. Good luck!
