"Did lotsa research- this is the one"
on by tockoezPros GUI, Powerful, 3HDMI ins, Good Remote
Cons Cannot asign HDMI audio to other inputs, No VGA in for computer
Summary I did research on HDMI receivers for about 4 months. Was planning on picking up the Pioneer VSX-82. I liked this because it is comparable to the Denon AVR-2807 but adds 1080p upcoversion and an extra HDMI in. Then the Sony came out. It adds another HDMI (3total) and upconverts to 1080p as well. In addition it has a sweet GUI. This is a nice touch. It is very easy to manipulate the inputs with it. I really only used it to set everything up, but now that everything is running, I just use the shortcuts on the remote (faster). The one issue I have is there is no way for me to hook up my computer to it, so I in fact have 2 cords running to my TV. Not a horrible issue but it would have been nice to have a VGA in. I run the computer audio throught the receiver still but for some reason it plays over only one channel. I am not sure if this is an issue with the receiver, the cord or the computer. But again, this is a very small issue. All in all this is an excellent receiver that I would recommend to anyone looking to buy one in this price range. OH YEAH... the important thing for me.... DENON and PIONEER void their warranties if you do not buy from an authorized dealer... SONY does NOT and their warranty is for 5 years (longer than both DENON and Pioneer). This thing is SWEET!!!

"Exchanged for a Pioneer Elite with no HDMI inputs"
on by cjjdrinorPros Great Back panel layout
Cons Remote is junk; thank God for my Harmony 1000
Summary Over all it's a good replacement for my Pioneer Elite. Had to have the HDMI inputs and output to match my Sony Blu-Ray. I wish Sony would offer THX, this is the only thing I miss from my Elite.Remote is cheap for Sony ES line, hope you have a good universal, like a Harmony. Upconversion is minimal at best.

"From a novice"
on by travisnnancyPros Easy on screen commands and great with PS 3
Cons Remote is horrible, SONY OFFER ME AN UPGRADE PLEASE
Summary I recently sold my yamaha 2500 so I could upgrade to HDMI. I loved my yamaha but the Sony sounds much better driving a 7.1 B&M theatre system. I am not into all the tech specs etc. I looked at watts per channel and read as many reviews as I could. But the bottom line is that coupled with my PS 3 movies and sound quality are leaps and bounds above the yamaha. The remote as everyone has said is terrible. Could there be a underlying reason, anyone heard of Sony coming out with a touch pad.I guess what I am saying is bottom line it sounds better and I got a local retailer for $1100.00 including tax after they did an internet price match.

"an excellent AV receiver amont best out there"
on by mdntcallrPros HDMI handling, upverting high end video processor (full 1080p), Audio d/a converter, room EQ mic, video setup menu
Cons Could use more watts/power for multichannel setting, does not do DTS-HD or Dolby comparable, No THX Cert, just ok remote control, and does not offer Sirius option
Summary With this model, i believe Sony has set a wonderful standard. it is an excellent receiver. works great as the center to my home theater.
I am very impressed, Sony has improved a great deal from their older models.
Has room for improvement: needs DTS HD, even higher end THX cert type amplifier for it.
Remote could also be better, for the money this remote is cheap, and it could use backlighting.
It would be great to have the HDMI inputs also be able to be defined under the SAT/DBS button.
But, all in all this is an excellent receiver and i have happy to have one. -
"Spectacular"
on by ermaho2Pros Video quality, sound quality......in a word, the best I have encounterd
Cons Embarasing remote (SONY BE ASHAMED), no on-screen abilty to check sound fields
Summary With the exception of the cons I mentioned, this unit is spectacular. It blows away my previous Yamaha sound system...... having the 120 watts/ channel..........the receiver does need tweaking.......the audio is preset w/ too much treble, but easily adjustable.
The most amazing element is the video quality!!!!!!!!
As long as you use HDMI inputs into this receiver and use the one HDMI output to your HDTV, you will be astonished at the extroadinary color and crispness added to your HD monitor through the receiver. I'm still amazed after two weeks!
However, SONY should be burned at the stake for providing such a feeble, hard to use, unlit remote!!!!!!!!!!!! SHAME ON YOU SONY..we who have purchased this unit at this price, deserve something as amazing as this unit. SHIP us ALL a new remote.
(Anyone from Sony read CNET?)
All in all, the best upscale receiver for the buck on the market............so long Yamaha.
