"HDMI not ready for primetime" on by kd141

Pros: Conceptually a great idea. I have two HDMI sources a DVD player and a TiVo HD DirecTV Receiver. The stereo conceptually should work.

Cons: This is a $2000 doorstop. Problem 1 - HDMI Audio doesn't work when Screen is on. Problem 2 HDMI throughput for DVD activates the DVD's copyright protection and stops the DVD player.

Summary: I was in love with the unit from the moment I saw it because it was the first affordable unit ($2000) with HDMI switching available, but now I JUST WANT TO DIVORCE IT. The problem appears to be with the monitor out HDMI port. When you turn your viewing source (your LCD Screen or Plasma unit) on it loses the HDMI Audio signal. Okay, so I was able to connect Toslink Cables and use Optical Audio instead with video from the HDMI Cable. Second problem, when you turn on your viewing source while watching a DVD it activates your DVD's HDCP (Copyright Protection) and it stops the DVD because the DVD believes you are trying to pirate it. So, now I try to get Sony to the rescue (BAD IDEA). Sony's first layer of technical support is a modern marvel - they can guide you through any labrynth of known issues with individuals who are pleasant. But God forbid your problem goes beyond that curtain. I have seen behind the curtain and it is UGLY ... plagued with incompetence, poor customer service, and individuals who believe customers are twerps. I thought I was on an episode of Crank Yankers with a product specialist named ANDY (employee ID CV1Z). He actually told me to shutup a couple of times. I have spoken to Customer Service at least a dozen times. I have tried service centers in my hometown of Corpus Christi with no luck, then driven 150 miles away to San Antonio to leave it with an authorized Sony Service Center who couldn't help because get this "they didn't have an HDMI cable." ( Soundcom in San Antonio). Sent it to Sony's Laredo Service Center (where they sent it back to me with no notice claiming they found nothing wrong). Now this week, I am being asked to send it to Laredo again. Wish me luck, but I fear the worst, I have had the unit 90 days now without one day where it was working. BE AFRAID OF THIS UNIT... VERY AFRAID. And buy a brand other than Sony.

"As good as it get's" on by justthebest

Pros: Powerful and simple to use

Cons: A 3rd HDMI input would be nice

Summary: I am experiencing NONE of the problems the other reviewer stated. Everything works perfectly, and everything I have hooked into it uses HDMI. That is why I bought it, for the HDMI inputs. In the bargain, I got the best sounding receiver I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.
This beautiful beast has 4 digital Mosfet amps per channel-that's right I said DIGITAL-pumpimg out 170 watts of pure transparent uncluttered sound. The best I have ever heard. I have yet to turn the voulume past 60%. If it hurts your ears, it's loud enough. Just make sure you have some good speakers. I am running the Sony HDD500 digital video recorder via HDMI, and the Sony DVPNS90V DVD player via HDMI all into the receiver, and out via HDMI to my new Zenith 50" plasma. Stunning. I play my CD's on the DVD using HDMI- and they sound AMAZING. You could spend 5 grand on seperate amp/preamps and be wasting 3 grand. Buy this for 2 grand and go get those great speaker's you've alway's wanted. This is an amazingly good unit...

"HDMI DOES NOT WORK" on by clapper

Pros: 52 lbs. of Paper Weight....nothing flies

Cons: can not use HDMI port out

Summary: HDMI will not work with my cable receiver or DVD player, Sony DVP-NS3100ES.

Purchased on Febuary 9th and did not work with HDMI out of the box. Sony support had me do all types of cable switching, over 5 hours. Then had me get new cable box from TWC. When that did not work told me to return to the dealer and exchange for new one. After a 3 hour round trip for the exchange the new unit did not work either. Then Sony told me to take to local repair unit. They laughed very hard when I told them the problem. Not only that they do not have the equipment to check HDMI / HDCP but that all the units of this model they have seen has the same problem.

Sony then had me send it to the repair facility in Texas. They received it on Feb. 24th and it has been there since. They can't get it to work either.

Component video from the cable box to the receiver will not work either HDMI out or component video out to the TV.

The cable box will work HDMI or component video to the TV.

If you do not need or will never need HDMI then this unit is fine...otherwise you have a 52 lb. paper weight.

"ONLY PROFESSIONALS NEED APPLY" on by jebbj19

Pros: State of the art build "an aluminum clad behemoth" before its time many soundfields for playback of video and audio sources. This receiver can upgrade your sources through the hdmi soundfield a big plus for old analog or digital inputs. Good look.

Cons: Complicated for setup of sound parameters for inputs for outputs. Reading the manual is like reading a foreign language no simple way to walk through installation.

Summary: Great for the persons who have a perchant for great sound and video and don't mind setting up an "apple" type product complexing simple applications. I bought this receiver 4 years ago for 1,200.00 but it sells for more today. Quite a find for an audiophile collection.
