"HDMI DOES NOT WORK"
Pros: 52 lbs. of Paper Weight....nothing flies
Cons: can not use HDMI port out
Summary: HDMI will not work with my cable receiver or DVD player, Sony DVP-NS3100ES.
Purchased on Febuary 9th and did not work with HDMI out of the box. Sony support had me do all types of cable switching, over 5 hours. Then had me get new cable box from TWC. When that did not work told me to return to the dealer and exchange for new one. After a 3 hour round trip for the exchange the new unit did not work either. Then Sony told me to take to local repair unit. They laughed very hard when I told them the problem. Not only that they do not have the equipment to check HDMI / HDCP but that all the units of this model they have seen has the same problem.
Sony then had me send it to the repair facility in Texas. They received it on Feb. 24th and it has been there since. They can't get it to work either.
Component video from the cable box to the receiver will not work either HDMI out or component video out to the TV.
The cable box will work HDMI or component video to the TV.
If you do not need or will never need HDMI then this unit is fine...otherwise you have a 52 lb. paper weight.

this was my dream receiver with HDMI upconversion a SONY ES product but what a disappointment. setting up this receiver to play with my SONY dvd player has been a nightmare. it will not hold the video and switching is awful. i'm thinking about selling this one at a loss and finding something easier to setup with all my equiptment.

I understand that you might have had problems with this unit. Unfortunately the HDMI IN only upconverts 480i to 480p (This was clearly stated in the proffesional review done by CNET). The problem with this is if you are sending a 1080i/720p signal through the reciever and are trying to view the 1080i/720p signal on your television (HDMI OUT) it wont "hold" the signal. The Signal process gets lost through the unit. THROUGH COMPONENT HOWEVER, it will hold the signal. Just purchase a few HDTV COMPONENT cables (and optical) and you should not have any problems. If you are trying to get rid of all the cables, unfortunately you wont be able to do that. Sony is probably going to fix that for later generation recievers. However, for for the price range it was in, and when it was available, (and because you are buying a SONY product that comes with a 5 year warranty) this unit clearly was a great buy if you found it anywhere near the 1500 or less range.

Never liked Sony, their products are inferior. Wanna good quality Receiver? Stay with Dennon, Marantz, HarmanKardon, Bryston. Sony no matter how expensive is still junk.
