"Wow!! A beast" on by dvd_max
Pros: Lots of power to 7 channels
Cons: UI and controls not firmware upgradeable.
Summary: I gave this a 10 because it is perfect for my application. (Your mileage may vary.) If Cnet allowed us to break down the review, I would give it a 10 in the value Category (Under $500 new on eBay), a 10 for performance, An 8 for aesthetics, and a 5 for the GUI. It took me about 10 minutes to connect this to my 7.1 channels of speakers, HDDVD, DVR, TV, Xbox and PC. The Sony speaker setup program was quick to run (they have a drop in sheet to explain it). The confusing part is when you try to assign an audio input to a video input. Here is a tip. The menu which shows this is backwards. It looks like you are assigning an audio input to a video input, when actually you are assigning the video to an audio input. Once you figure this out, the player is a breeze. The Sony remote is o.k. although somewhat bulky and ugly. I use a Logitech Remote anyways so I put the Sony remote away after the initial setup. The unit allows me to seamlessly go from HDMI inputs to Component inputs to S-video, etc. I have connected this player to pretty much every device I have and even use the analog 5.1 inputs to connect to my HDDVD for Dolby TrueHD sound. Although you can’t upconvert from the component inputs to the HDMI outputs, you can up convert if you stay with the same connectors. I have connected both the HDMI output and the component output to my TV, and switch back and forth to accommodate this. (Remember, HDMI is digital and DRM, component is neither).
The only two things I would ask for if they do a revision on this player is faster speed on the volume control, and a cleaner UI. -
"Unit description is missleading, do not buy for upscaling" on by Venomnusss
Pros: Lots of features
Cons: the main feature you want does not work.
Summary: I bought this unit for three reasons. 1. I had another Sony receiver that performed exceptionally well these past 5 years. 2. HDMI switching. 3. It will upscale and output the other formats to HDMI. #3 is 99% false It will only upscale from 480i to 480P. If you have a component signal above 480P, the receiver will downgrade it to 480P if it goes out through the HDMI. Obviously Sony did this on purpose. They could have at least let the signal pass through at its native resolution.
Once again Sony wants to be at the forefront of DRM. -
"Great Sound and impressive inputs. HDMI 1080p" on by 360xbox
Pros: Supports Linear PCM (uncompressed) on my PS3
Cons: No 1080p passthrough over component for my 360
Summary: Great receiver. It does 1080p passthrough over HDMI. I was impressed it could do Linear PCM just like the higher end 5200es.
The sound and power of this receiver is impressive. It's a big step up from the Sony str-dg800 and not as expensive as the similar featured Sony 3200es.
Picture quality over HDMI is fantastic.
For happy!Updated
If you have followed the Xbox360 and PS3 you will have noticed that 1080p is possible over component. This for games only that support this, or that are upconverted. Of course, 1080p is not possible for HD movies because of copy protection, that is for HDMI.
I have 1080p over component directly to my TV for games. In my post I said that I could not convert the 1080p over component to HDMI using my receiver.
Hope that helps. -
"Great Unit!" on by notsosae
Pros: Price / Performance! 2 HDMI inputs for $500!
Cons: Auto Calibration
Summary: Using this unit with HDMI input from a Sony NS71 and output to a KDS55A2020 - I couldn't be more pleased. DTS/ES 7.1 from "Gladiator" never sounded better.
Auto-Calibration is an issue tho. All settings leave the side and back surround too low for my tastes. Also - The test says all my speakers are OUT-of-Phase. They are properly wired. -
"Very Impressed, better than Denon 3808 or Onyo 805" on by rseibert
Pros: Beast of power with (tube sound)warm sound
Cons: at 40lbs it broke my back
Summary: Had a Onkyo TX-SR805 for a few weeks until I heard this baby and it blew me away, sold the Onkyo TX_SR805 and bought this Sony beast, have always had Denon or Onkyo products and always thought Sony to be inferior consumer marketed goods untill I heard and played with the Sony STR-DG1000, I run 7 Boston Micro 100's and just unbelievable, sounds as warm as my tube gear! Maybe Sony finally wants to compete with the big boys, good job! I read somewhere the video processing wasen't that good, all I say to that is bullpoop! I run a 1080p projector in my HTR and the picture looks better than my HQV processor?! Good job Sony!
