"1080p support but no uncompressed audio" on by thriceguy

    Pros: 1080p support

Cons: no lpcm 5.1 uncompressed audio

Summary: This unit does everything it says it does except process pcm 5.1 uncompressed audio. I was hoping to use this with my PS3 and bluray movies to get 5.1 pcm but it was too good to be true for $300.

    "Functional" on by mr_small144

Pros: Accepts three inputs, produces 1 video output plus surround sound

    Cons: I learned about connectivity

Summary: I am not sorry I bought this unit. However I was forced into a learning curve after getting it home. It all works, I just have to pull in a lot more cables.

First of all, Sony advertised this unit with S-Video jacks. It doesn't have any.
Next, I was faced with connectivity problems. I wanted to connect my DVD player and my XBOX to the TV and use this receiver as a switching unit.

After spending several hundred dollars on HDMI cables, I found out that the receiver will only switch HDMI if these cables are present. The XBOX is not HDMI, so it is out.

The receiver does have active switching on the HDMI ports, so it should work if I connect say a PS3, a DVD and use the HDMI output to the TV.

The receiver HDMI output also has an A/V SYNCH control function that will delay the audio to keep the audio and video in synch.

If you forget about the HDMI connectivity, which is why I bought it, this unit has a section allowing three component video signals (green/blue/red)input to be output on Component video.
It also has three or four "left audio(L)right(R)video(V)" input signals that may be output to the similar grade output ports.

The receiver will not accept a signal via "left, right, video" input and use the HDMI cable to go out to the TV. I guess that was too much to ask.

"Won't control other components, OK sound, low price." on by Brian Lawson

Pros: low price, info display, XM sat radio sound quality, quick menu reference

Cons: remote will only control BRAVIA components, will not control non-BRAVIA Sony components

Summary: I bought this receiver based solely on Sony's reputation for quality, and this unit's ability to receive XM radio broadcasts. After getting frustrated because it couldn't control even my Sony DVP-NS75H HDMI upconveting DVD player, I contacted Sony tech support and learned that this unit will only control Sony BRAVIA components, which doesn't help me much. I want a receiver that will control my other components, at least the on/off functions. So I returned this unit and traded for a 5.1 Yamaha RX-V461 A/V receiver and I am very happy--it has a multi-brand remote control, works well with my system, and the XM radio sound quality is much better than the Sony. I love Yamaha's sound, it's the best.

In summary, unless you have all Sony BRAVIA components, I would suggest NOT buying this receiver, as it has no advantages over any other brand and doesn't sound as good.

"Inexpensive, decent receiver" on by JPFrechette

Pros: HDMI inputs and output AND component for a low price.

Cons: Setup menu is not intuitive, had to look at the manual for the first time in my life to figure out how to setup the freq. output.

Summary: I paid 200$ for this receivre to replace my aged Sony str-da777es. The 777 ES cost me 2500$ in 1998 and was a pretty well rate receiver back then. The DG710 sound just as good and handle all the latest format. Some reviewer here mention the lack of looseless audio support but they are wrong, they shouls read the manual to find how to setup their system for it.

"No S-video inputs or outputs" on by Shaughan4960

    Pros: Don't know

Cons: No S-video inputs or outputs

Summary: The listed specs, which are the same on Sony's site, say that there are 3 S-video inputs and 1 S-video output. There are none, as you can verify by looking carefully at the photographs of the rear of the unit. The same is true of the STR-DG810 and STR-DG910, at least according to the photos---I don't own those.

I haven't hooked it up yet, but I haven't yet noticed any other errors in the specs.
