"7.1 with 3 1080p HDMI inputs lots of basic features, good entry level A/V rec."
Pros: 7.1, 3 HDMI inputs, great sound with good speakers, video upscale
Cons: remote is useless, no S video input, unintuitive setup, max sound is a bit low, missing features.
Summary: 1st I am overall happy with this A/V receiver. What will be the 1st component in my HT setup I replace? The STR-DG910. The 910 is a very good entry level choice, but is missing inputs like S-video, video upscaling and conversion is ok but could be better, and I would like networking capability which the 910 doesn't have. In the next 12 months many brands will offer 3 HDMI inputs with all the other standard inputs, and with networking, in the $400-600 price range when they are available I will replace the 910.
Ok the good stuff, for $350 the 910 provides 3 HDMI inputs multichannel 7.1 sound, analog video to HDMI video conversion, XM sat-radio readiness, automatic speaker setup with a supplied calibration microphone, a Digital Media Port for use with an optional iPod dock or Bluetooth dongle, and seven 100-watt amplifier channels.
Setup with supplied mike is a nice starting point, but plan on doing lots of manual adjustments to get the sound levels right. Expect lots of time reading the manual to accomplish these adjustment.
Video either supplied from my Comcast STB via HDMI cable or from my Toshiba HD-DVD via HDMI cable looks great, but not any better when these connections are made directly to my new Panasonic Plasma. Sound when either HD-dvd or HDTV is excellent on my 5.1 system. The same for music CDs, the sound is excellent.
The bad, the remote with supplied codes won't control other components except for on/off. The OSD on screen display is not easy to get to, no button on the remote, therefore pretty much worthless, you can't manually adjust crossover and other levels when Auto Calc is on. The sound output seems low, and I have to operate the a/v at around 50 for loudness.
Again, for entry level, (and my HT system is entry, 42" 1080p plasma, 5.1 polk speakers, subwoofer, this system is one or two steps above HT in a box) the sound and video is GREAT, the 910 ties it all together and delivers a excellent HT experience.
