Pros Easy set up
Sound is wonderful
Lots of inputs
Cons Not so good for video
Summary I bought this for a 5.1 system in an odd shape room (rectangle room missing one of the long sides - it attache to the kitchen). I have it paired with some pioneer speakers.
Set up was just as easy as any other receiver that I have ever owned. It has two benefits over my past receivers though: 1) on screen setup (via HDMI cable to TV), and 2) auto-calibration of speakers (which is great for my odd room). I believe the auto-calibration did much better than I would have and the onscreen setup removed any confusion as to what one may see on the receiver's small (compared to a TV) screen.
The sound is wonderful. Watching a movie in 5.1 in an odd room with this receiver is just as nice as a movie theater. My dog even went to the back door when she heard a dog barking over one of the surround speakers.
I am unhappy in the video Upconvert/Upscale from analog to 1080i via HDMI. I was under the impression that when I connected my satellite to the receiver and then to the TV the picture would be better - it is not. The picture is better using the S-cord directly to the TV (I don't have HD satellite) as opposed to using RCA cable to the receiver then HDMI to the TV. However, the picture from the BR player to the receiver looks just as nice as it did when directly connected to the TV. So, if you already have something using an HDMI cable, connecting it to the Sony will not alter (hurt) your picture, but don't expect standard pictures to look like they are in HD.
The iPOD connection works with just a USB cord. However, if you want your iPOD to transmit to your TV, you need to have an RCA Video cable as well. ( I suggest you have to check for best deal before you will buy this Sony STRDH720 at -> Audiovideo-receiver.blogspot.com/2011/11/sony-strdh720.html )
The sound and some features give this receiver an "A" in my book. I didn't buy it to upscale my video, but if I had, then I would have been disappointed in this this purchase.
Pros good price on amazon.com
Cons Product failed to work just over 30 days from purchase. Has been in authorized repair shop for 27 days and counting. Setup guide is not that good, required hour online with support to get it up and running.
Summary New receiver and more then one part had to be replaced. One part was back ordered and that usually implies that the part is in high demand. I have had Sony products before and was satisfied with quality. I may have purchased a lemon, still the product did not meet my expectations. When asked to replace the unit I was told it was under warranty and the repair dealer would work on it. If that did not fix the issue it would go to another level to be resolved. I would suggest that anyone considering purchasing the unit shop around before doing so spending a few dollars more for something better. The quality of audio is not as good as my old receiver, when played at louder volume the quality of sound is distorted. I am not sure if one of parts that will be replaced will fix problem of unit powering off when music videos are in use.
