Manufacturer description
Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha HTR-5930 is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent sound fields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialog, music and effects from ideally located in these separate sound fields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and startlingly realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater! The decoding circuitry performs Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS Digital Surround, DTS-ES (DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1), DTS Neo: 6 and DTS 96/24 decoding with extreme accuracy, as well as all digital sound field processing. A THX Select mode is provided as an extra listening option.User opinions

gr8t sound
Pros: dollar value
Cons: complicated encoding
connection options ( ins & outs) etc... are slightly limited w/ only 3 hd inputs... well 4 would be better & the lack of any hdmi only show this unit is ever slightly out dated.....over all i love & enjoy this unit... but one caution " HELP ME OBE WHAN YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE"...my prayers are w you should you need to ENCODE / INTERGR8 any new items ( x-box, dvd burner...etc) into your system utilizing the remote. Trust me should you choose to accept this mission go ahead and make an appointment with your shrink!!!

great sound and value IF you can make it work!
Pros: WOW sound, great features at a great price
Cons: the person who wrote the use manual obviously NEVER used the unit!
Okay, so much for whining about programming, if you can get past that, this thing sounds GREAT. My HK AV700 blew out and I got this as an interim replacement - if I can get it programmed it will be permanent. It sounds better than anything I have ever had.
And, lets face it, a 5.1 AVR, DTS, Pro-Logic, XM ready, for under $200...? Yes, there is a Santa Claus! (Ifg only the elves could write a decent *%#!! Manual!)
