Yamaha RX-V1200 (discontinued)

Yamaha RX-V1200

Entered CNET Catalog: 01/24/2002

SKU: RX-V1200

Manufacturer: Yamaha Corp. of America

Manufacturer description

The RX-V1200 is a full-featured home theater receiver ready for all formats and for custom installation. It delivers high power to six channels and provides DTS ES, Neo 6 and DTS ES Matrix 6.1 decoding as well as Dolby Digital 6.1 and Dolby Pro Logic II decoding. Yamaha's new proprietary ASIC LSI, the 32-bit YSS-938, assures top quality audio performance. Discrete power transistors rather than IC chips are used in the amplifier section to provide the cleanest sound possible. The amp delivers 80 watts each to six channels. Yamaha's exclusive Tri-Field Cinema DSP imaging for video sound and Digital Sound Field Processing for music delivers the most realistic and dramatic sound possible. The RX-V1200 features 22 different sound programs that provide a total of 44 variations, so every movie and every piece of music will sound right in your home theater. Yamaha's famed low impedance drive circuitry is included in this receiver so that it can handle virtually all loads and a wide variety of speakers. For further speaker matching, the amplifier can set for either 4-or 8-ohm speakers.

Some folks like the sound of their movies and music straight and never engage extra surround processing or even nudge a bass or treble control up a notch. But there are lots of home-theater buyers who want to customize their sound. Yamaha's RX-V1200 receiver is aimed at the second group--its Tri-Field Cinema processing serves up a total of 44 surround variations, which means that you can fine-tune your DVD and CD listening to your taste.

Have it your way
The V1200's soft, orange display is easy on the eyes, and the receiver's sleek faceplate hides a cluster of buttons and knobs, as well as a complete set of audio/video/digital inputs behind a flip-down panel. The Bass Extension button on the main front panel lets you add a low-frequency boost without the hassle of using setup menus, and the Processor Direct feature gets you back to the original format in a jiffy. We spotted one rather unusual but potentially very useful feature: Center GEQ. If your center speaker is of a different brand or doesn't sonically match your left and right speakers, the Center GEQ's five-band graphic control can smooth things out. It's a way cool feature.

In addition to Yamaha's proprietary Tri-Field Cinema digital signal processing (DSP), this receiver is decked out with the latest Dolby Digital and DTS-ES Matrix and Discrete 6.1-channel surround-processing modes. Stereo CDs, FM radio, and older video sources will benefit from Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS Neo: 6's exquisite 5.1 surround effects. The receiver delivers 80 watts to each of 6 channels.

The V1200's back panel is chock-full of jacks: two sets of component-video inputs, numerous S-Video and composite-video ins and outs, and a grand total of seven digital-audio inputs (and two outputs). Audiophiles with turntables and Super Audio CD/DVD-Audio players will find all of the necessary connections. Future upgrades are possible via the 6.1 preamplifier outputs. Oh, and Yamaha wisely included A/B speaker connections so that you can toss an extra set of stereo speakers in another room. Setup procedures were fairly standard, but we never got used to the remote's awkward button layout.

Sounding out the V1200
There's a direct quality to the sound of the V1200 that brings out details such as the distant droning drums in the funeral procession at the beginning of The Godfather Part 2 DVD. As that scene unfolds, the viewer is surrounded by acres of hissing and whooshing cicadas, but the V1200's sound was more forward and detailed than we're used to. For example, Denon's receiver was warmer and more laid-back than the V1200. The Yamaha's leaner balance will appeal to some buyers, but we prefer components with a fuller sound.

The V1200 put Morphine's The Night CD on a diet--the band's thick-toned stand-up bass and husky baritone sax lacked their proper weighty presence. Ah, but that was with the tone controls set to their flat positions--customizing the sound is especially easy on the V1200, thanks to its front-mounted bass and treble controls.

That said, even after we jacked up the bass, the V1200 couldn't match the Denon's wide-open soundstage; the Yamaha flattened the spacious sound of our stereo classical CDs. So we next experimented with the simulated surround modes and settled on the Hall setting for Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta CD. We usually shy away from the artificial sound of these sorts of quasi-surround effects, but the Yamaha's processing is excellent. What's more, the V1200 allows the user to individually adjust a number of surround parameters--including room size, liveness, delay, and so on--for each DSP setting.

Yamaha's RX-V1200 carries a list price of $899, but you can typically find it for less than $700. The V1200's awesome processing capabilities will be just the ticket for hands-on home-theater aficionados. But for everyone else, we recommend checking out Denon's AVR-2802 or Onkyo's superb .

Great value, great sound

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this unit about six months ago, and coupled it with a new Infinity Modulus surround system. It has been rock solid reliable, and sounds great. I rated 'Support' as a 5, because I haven't needed to utilize support. The included documentation was more than adequate to figure out how to set it up and use it. Some people in earlier reviews fussed about the DSP modes, but I honestly can't find anything wrong with them. When a watch a movie, or television, I just pick the appropriate pre-defined mode, and thus far everything has sounded great. I run the pod-race from Phanthom Menace as a demo for friends and visitors, and they walk away astounded at the sound quality. The remote is interesting, to say the least, but I transferred all the functionality over to my Philips Pronto TSU2000 and no longer have to worry about it. All in all, this is a great receiver in general, even more so considering the price. If you're in the market for a mid-range receiver, you can't go wrong with this one.

Excellent Sound for the price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The Yamaha RX-V1200 is an excellent Reciever for its' price. The sound produced is rich without any distortion. Compared to the Denon 3802 I prfered this reciever's sound. It produces sound in an even pattern - all parts of the listening environment seemed filled with sound but yet did not sound loud The number of inputs digital & analog is great. Though I rarely use the DSP modes their presence do provide some interesting variations. The DSP modes have been very well thought out.

tedious

Pros:

Cons:

Review: not for laid back customers like myself. For every different movie or CD, I felt like changing the settings which becomes too annoying sometimes.

cost me three weeks salary, and worth every penny

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i've had this receiver for four months now, and movies and music have been comletely redefined. the reason i love this thing the most is that it took no time at all to get it to sound incredible and now that i have gotten used to the controls, if anything sounds weird or not up to par, i am sure there is a control to fix it. my friends come over for the great effects that 3 surround channels will give you, and the shaking a 350 Watt RMS sub can cause, but i feel most satisfied when i am enjoying late night watching where the sound is by no means loud but i still feel that cozy enveloping sound. volume control is great since low acceptable volumes range anywhere from -80 to -50 dB (depending on the movie) in 0.5 dB increments so it is very easy to find a suitable low volume. last thing is listening to cds in 6 channel stereo is the greatest thing i ever heard. my previous receiver was the rxv 420 and this is not even comparable, although at the time i loved that one too

awesome electronics

Pros:

Cons:

Review: this unit does it all i am very happy and the manual was a breeze to get through. movies will never be the same again

Just love it!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my second Yamaha receiver in 6 years (upgraded to get DTS-ES and 6.1 Matrix). I love everything about it. Power is clean, remote good, and it has the Yamaha name! EXCELLENT VALUE!

User Rating: 9/10

good overall but very complicated

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am a techie ... no doubt about it ... but even so, this unit is very cumbersome to configure. For example I still don't have the subwoofer working in "stereo" mode (as I believe it should). The unit is high quality, sounds great, looks great, and is very full featured. But the remote & front panel configuration is very awkward. (so when will this type of receiver have a 10/100 connector so I can connect it to my home network and configure it with a web browser? :)

Great Mid-Range Receiver

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Has a true 6th channel speaker output. Very good power supply. Even though the specs state 80w x 6, but sounds more than that. Some nice features are the Optical jack doors that replaced those annoying 'plugs.' Heavy but solid receiver. Front panel closure which gives it that 'high-end' look. Universal remote is pretty easy to use and program. Dimmable LCD. Tons of input jacks. Some 'Could be better' stuff: speaker jack spacing is a bit tight. FM reception is weak. 'On' and 'Stand-by' are 2 different buttons on the remote.
