Yamaha RX-V650 is a 7.1-channel receiver with an extensive range of Home Cinema functions including YPAO Acoustic Customization, Dolby Pro Logic IIx compatibility, 1015W (145W x 7 DIN) power, Quad-Field CINEMA DSP and 29 Surround Programs. The Digital ToP-ART design concept combines the latest and best technologies, parts and circuit designs to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior components to achieve high current power with low impedance from input to output. Pure Direct is a special listening mode that provides the highest possible signal purity. It can be used for both analogue and digital sources, with two-channel or multi-channel inputs. When it is selected, the signal follows the most direct path and power to the video circuit is shut down. Certain modes are not operational and even the display is turned off, lighting for only a few seconds when a function is used. Yamaha's unique YPAO system analyzes the acoustics of the room and adjusts various speaker parameters to provide the optimum sound at the listening position. It's like having a professional audio engineer tweak your system. Naturally, like all Yamaha user-friendly models, settings can be made manually, and there is a Default mode to revert to factory presets and an Undo mode to revert to previous settings. Yamaha's ultra-sophisticated Quad-Field and Tri-Field CINEMA DSP technology creates thrillingly realistic soundscapes in your room. 29 surround programs provide full format compatibility and extensive listening choices. Yamaha's powerful YSS-948 LSI has the necessary speed and precision to achieve accurate synchronization of images and sounds, which is called lip-sync. By using the Audio Delay mode, lip-sync parameters can be adjusted when necessary. During low-volume listening, such as late at night, dynamic range suffers and you may miss some sounds. The Night Listening Enhancer offers two modes, Cinema and Music, with three-level selectability, which will ensure that you don't miss movie dialogue or quiet passages, or lose overall surround spaciousness. The SILENT CINEMA mode allows private listening enjoyment of multi-channel music or movies, with an accurate simulation of surround sound, through ordinary headphones. One way of ensuring the highest video quality for your home cinema system is to use the best possible video signal. This receiver automatically upgrades the input signal (composite to S-Video, S-Video to composite) to the one that your monitor/TV can accept. The frequency response of the Component Video Monitor Out signal is 5HzH60MHz, making it compatible with HDTV monitors.User opinions

Great receiver! Sound is great and set up is a breeze.
Pros: Easy set up, great sound, cheaper than its peers.
Cons: none, it doesn't convert to component video, but sacrifices must be made
Review: This receiver is truly great. It's sibbling (rx v550) scored very well through CNET, and this higher powered and larger featured version is even better! It has great power and easy to use controls. It uses TopArt technology so one may use speakers of lower impedence, and it features "pure direct" for audio one desires to hear the way it was recorded. The quality and features cannot be beat for the price. Though audiophiles may be drawn toward the Denon 2805 (which is good), I think that the Yamaha rx series offers serious competition.
