"Best purchase I have made in years"

by benspock on October 28, 2008

Pros: Hooked up to my older Denon 5803 using analog audio and HDMI to my 60" Sony SXRD. First time I have heard the newer Dolby tracks. Simply fantastic video and sound. Transformers is unbelievable

Cons: Could have had better audio setup but not a deal breaker

Summary: I purchased the BD55 over the BD35 because I needed the analog audio connections for my older receiver. I'm was impressed with the sound coming out of my system. The video is just as impressive. I wish it supported a wireless connection to the internet, but that to was not a deal breaker. I will just run a cable down to my video room. Bottom line, this was the best purchase I have made as an addition to my home theater. I also own an HD-DVD player but the picture on the Blu_ray player is as good if not better and the fact that I can now take advantage of the new Dolby sound tracks makes it stand above the rest.

To person with Onkyo - I am for sure NOT an expert, but from what I have learned in researching the main difference is in whether your receiver can decode for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. If your receiver information shows that it can do this then you would only need the 35. The benefit to the 55 is that it has that decoding built in (and also that if your receiver only has multichannel analog instead of HDMI then you would need the 55 for the analog connections). One thing that I have found in my area and online is that 35 appears to be sold out everywhere (reputable) and is even in backorder status on the Panasonic site if you try to order directly from them - this is as of 12/30/2008. Please confirm this by checking with someone more knowledgable than I am or maybe by calling Panasonic customer service.

I have an Onkyo SR805 AV reciever. It's about 8 months old. It has four HDMI's "IN" and one "OUT". I have seven surr. speakers plus one subwoofer. Do I need the Panasonic DMP-BD35 or the more expensive DMP-BD55 ?
