    "It's OK I guess"

by lawgone on October 4, 2008

Pros: OK, I've only seen it in a store so this isn't a great review but there's no place to discuss here so I have to write here. I just have one question, why not just get a PS3??? It has a sleek profile and does everything better.

Cons: Cost about the same as a PS3 and is slower.

Summary: Just buy a PS3. Playing a Blu Ray movie on it is pretty easy and I know a lot of people who have bought it for just that. And if you ever get the itch to play a game you can do that to. It's just a no brainer really. The only value of a stand alone BR player at this price point is that you can integrate control for this into a universal remote where as you can't with the PS3 b/c it uses blue tooth for all its controls. This player is also not as tall so if you wanted to stack something on it you could.

Buy and use before writing a phony review about Panosonic DMP BD 55. Your review has no legs.

PS3 does not have analog audio output

I would like to correct myself for a typo in my initial reply (below). The DMP-BD35 (not BD55) is selling at $299.

First, I apologize in case anyone else has already made these statements, but personally I do agree that the PS3 is the better overall pick. Even at $299 the DMP-BD55 might not be profile 2.0 compliant and nor will the BDP-S350 (both of which currently as of 10/15/2008 are selling at $299). However, in my humble opinion, the reason why the Panasonic DMP-BD55 (and possibly the Sony BDP-S550) could be considered better options to some individuals is for 2 reasons:

    1) The individual who purchases this item will benefit if they have an older receiver that does not accept HDMI inputs, and that individual would like to still hear high-definition audio, which is not carried through digital coax or digital optical outputs.

    2) The individual for a number of reasons does not wish to utilize a gaming console as a video player.

What is fascinating is the fact that the PS3 still has the best load times, and no standalone system has been able to match it.

Why do people continue to compare stand alone players to the PS3. If someone wanted the PS3 as their blu-ray solution then they would have bought it months ago. While the PS3 is very good at what is does it has its own limitations. PS3 is a gaming consol that plays blu-ray. My son has a PS3 and the fan noise is unbearable. There are plenty of people who do not want a gaming consol as their blu-ray player. I wish most reviewers would stop comparing stand alone players to the PS3. Everybody who has wanted a PS3 has bought or in the process of buying a PS3. Most people buy the PS3 as a gaming solution 1st with the capability of playing blu-ray. Most blu-ray reviews always make some type of comparison to the PS3. We don?t care!

I don't think the PS3 has Bitstream audio capabilities and Dolby Digital Plus, but I may be wrong. People might be looking for the stand alone blueray player for its audio capabilities.

  • reply by: smith_jr on October 8, 2008

Probably because some of us just simply don't want a game console and some of us (belive it or not) don't much care for Sony Corp.

  • reply by: sk8flawzz on October 6, 2008

    Agree with other comment.
Customers with older receivers, (7.1 analog input only) would be better off with this player than a PS3. (Obviously)
If that is not the situation then the DMP-BD35 (for ~$100 less) is a no brainer if not interested in a PS3.

You haven't seen the bd55 in the store because it hasn't been released yet. You give a product 2.5 stars in a user review section when a) you are not a user b) it hasn't been released. Cmon.
By the way many people looking at the BD55 will buy it because of the 7.1 analog outs which the PS3 doesn't have.
