"Beware if considering PS3!"
Pros: Great quality, upconverting, & QUIET!
Cons: None as of yet.
Summary: This is mostly a note for anyone considering a PS3 as a blu-ray player. I bought one this weekend on CNET's recommendation that it is a better blu-ray player than the BDP-S350. I returned it yesterday and bought the BDP-S350 and here's why: The PS3 has serious Fan Noise Issues! ...to the point, where it totally ruined my viewing experience. Do the research yourself. Google PS3 & fan noise. You will see why a stand-alone Blu-Ray player isn't so bad after-all.

I've had my PS3 for over two years. My fan is noisy when playing Blu Ray movies and I'm afraid my components will melt if I close the door on my media cabinet. The helicopters and machine guns in action movies drown out my PS3 fan, but when watching a drama, I can hear it.
I just bought a BDPS350 so I don't have to move my PS3 out of my office when my wife wants to watch a movie and in hops that the fan isn't an issue. -
spambaggs is right. I live in Thailand and despite all the aircons on, the PS3 gets hot when watching movies, at least enough to turn on its very noisy fan which just ruins the viewing experience.
Another issue is incompatibility of audio out through HDMI to Harman/Kardon AVR 255/355 receivers, being restricted to optical output (on HDMI parts of the sound are disappearing, sometimes entire audio gets cut for minutes).
For these 2 reasons I am buying a BluRay player for the main home theater and moving PS3 to the bedroom as addition to DVD home theater there.
I don't think anyone who actually owns PS3 outside Alaska or Antarctica can deny it's making noise under load, which BluRay video decoding definitely is. -

Something must have been wrong with your particular PS3. Mine is whisper quiet when watching Blu-ray Disc movies or any other time. It makes a little more noise when playing COD4 online though. In all fairness, I have heard of other complaining of fan noise. I guess we got lucky.

You are dead wrong to claim the PS3 has a loud fan. Ive had a PS3 for a year now and its extremely quiet. Before claims of lack of use I game and watch bluray constantly. You had a defective machine ..maybe. Youve definately settled for a lesser Bluray player though.
