"Great picture but buyer beware!!!"1.5 starson by kingobeach
Pros: Picture quality is fantastic and Netflix streaming is great!! Load times not much worse than our standard dvd player. Menu settings VERY easy to navigate/understand.
Cons: EXTREMELY POOR build/design quality and customer support. No effective warranty support either.
Summary: We bought this player the weekend after Thanksgiving in 2010. It was great for the first 7 months. CNET references slow load times. Sure, it takes a bit but I didn't find it annoying in the least. However, in June, it suddenly quit playing any blu-ray disc -- even ones we'd watched a few times already (and are not scratched). I spoke with an LG rep via their website and after walking me through what I'd already done (restoring the player to factory default settings), she decided it would need to be sent in for repair work. At our expense (for labor and shipping).
Mind you - this isn't toted around all over the place. It sits under our TV on a shelf. That's it. We installed the latest firmware updates any time we were prompted. It was kept clean and not abused/bumped/jarred. It still plays standard dvd discs without any issue but blu-rays are dead. In my mind, this points to a firmware issue, not a hardware one...though there are 2 separate lasers involved so it's possible the blue laser could have failed.
After researching this issue on other AV forums, it appears this is a known issue with LG blu-ray players. The customer service rep was duly apologetic but reminded me that LG offers only a 90 day warranty on parts and labor. In my mind, this length of warranty is akin to a company posting a billboard stating its product will NOT last very long at all. Unfortunately, I made the uncharacteristic mistake of not researching owner reviews first. The customer service rep. told me she was filing a complaint on my behalf due to my statement that this was unacceptable as well as unbelievable. To date (over 1 month later), I have had no contact of any kind from LG.
So, tough lesson learned. Though LG produces very affordable products, it appears that affordability comes at the price of having to replace said product annually. We are now shopping for a non-LG replacement. I would strongly recommend that anyone considering any LG product do diligent research and see what owners are experiencing. CNETs review of the image/feature quality is dead-on and I will continue to come here first but they are unable, for obvious reasons, to effectively comment on durability which is of greater concern to me and most folks I know.
Therefore, with great disappointment, I must close with:
