Pros Cheap. Easy set-up. I cannot corroborate that it doesn't play 1080p. In fact, to be called a Blu-Ray player, is HAS to play 1080p. Mine played 1080p just fine! Picture looks good on my 46" Plasma, better than a DVD. Customer service was quick & easy.
Cons Loud. Sounds like my old laptop running. You CAN get firmware updates, though you have to burn them to a CD and insert the CD. Froze up a week after buying it.
Summary For $78, all one can hope for is a player that works, plays Blu-Rays, and plays them in a manner that looks better than a DVD. It does all of that, and not much more. But if you want more, you more than likely won't even be in the market for a cheap player such as this. Anyone who is disappointed in this player had way too high of hopes from the get go. At best, this is an average player...but again, it's only fitting for the average movie watcher. Mine projected in 1080p just fine. And it's quite simple to update the firmware by burning a CD with the software on it, then inserting it into the player.
My Blu-Ray player, however, froze up and wouldn't turn back on after a few weeks of using it. My assumption is that it was a manufacturing oops that is unique to my system. The customer service (yes, Funai Corp & not Magnavox) was quick to honor my warranty and overnighted my broken system to a repair center. If you have a Magnavox Authorized repair center in your town, you can do that instead. Anyway, I can't complain too much, as you do get what you pay for. But I am happy with this purchase for what I use it for. It has no frills, but costs 1/5th the price of my roomates' Blu-Ray player. I can say, however, that the picture his creates is NOT 5 times as nice. 1080p is 1080p is 1080p....
Pros Brought this one as a back up to my Ps3. (The Kids play video games on that one) Not a back Blu ray player at all. Not many features but plays all of my Blu ray and DVD collection without a problem.
Cons Very so slow loading time. No thrills as far as features go.
Summary I honestly can't tell the difference between my Ps3 and the Magnavox Blu ray far as picture quality goes when connected using my HDMI cable. So if you?re in need of a back up this little cheap player will do the job.
Pros Nice price, and the upsample for standard DVD looked good.
Cons I put in a bluray movie from netflix, and it wouldn't play. Marked it as damaged and the replacement wouldn't play either. I see comments on the web about "do a firmware upgrade" but no upgrade is available for this device.
Summary It seems to be the luck of the draw whether you get one with the proper firmware or not. I'm taking mine back for a refund. My firmware is 1.002, and I found that deep in the setup menu.
Pros Cheap, easy to use, will last
Cons Stops in the middle of a movie (DVD or Blu-Ray), loud hardware noises, terribly long time to start up
Summary It is a good 'cheap' player. You get what you pay for. Does give a pretty decent picture though.
Pros plays on my ancient (3 year old) LCD sanyo with full HD. Beautiful pix when compared to DVD. Is better than I expected when I purchased it.
Cons Machine is very S L O W in responding to commands.
Summary Love it, Will be kept and moved to the hobby room when we next do our upgrades (soon as the wife permits..lol.)
