"Basic Blue Ray Player, w/out the $$$$ frills & thrills"3.0 starson by rjwerb
Pros: Cheap. Easy set-up. I cannot corroborate that it doesn't play 1080p. In fact, to be called a Blu-Ray player, is HAS to play 1080p. Mine played 1080p just fine! Picture looks good on my 46" Plasma, better than a DVD. Customer service was quick & easy.
Cons: Loud. Sounds like my old laptop running. You CAN get firmware updates, though you have to burn them to a CD and insert the CD. Froze up a week after buying it.
Summary: For $78, all one can hope for is a player that works, plays Blu-Rays, and plays them in a manner that looks better than a DVD. It does all of that, and not much more. But if you want more, you more than likely won't even be in the market for a cheap player such as this. Anyone who is disappointed in this player had way too high of hopes from the get go. At best, this is an average player...but again, it's only fitting for the average movie watcher. Mine projected in 1080p just fine. And it's quite simple to update the firmware by burning a CD with the software on it, then inserting it into the player.
My Blu-Ray player, however, froze up and wouldn't turn back on after a few weeks of using it. My assumption is that it was a manufacturing oops that is unique to my system. The customer service (yes, Funai Corp & not Magnavox) was quick to honor my warranty and overnighted my broken system to a repair center. If you have a Magnavox Authorized repair center in your town, you can do that instead. Anyway, I can't complain too much, as you do get what you pay for. But I am happy with this purchase for what I use it for. It has no frills, but costs 1/5th the price of my roomates' Blu-Ray player. I can say, however, that the picture his creates is NOT 5 times as nice. 1080p is 1080p is 1080p....
