"Great Blu-ray Player--But Pricey" on by dvdirv
Pros: Solid video and audio processing. Wireless connectivity standard. 3D processing, too!
Cons: Small Open/Eject Button on unit. Size of display hard to read across room. Price.
Summary: Oppo has done it again with their new BDP-93 player that replaces the BDP-83 model.
This model adds 2 important features: (1) Wireless connectivity and (2) 3D functionality. As major as these features are, the BDP-93 offers state-of-the-art video and audio processing in a player under $500!
The BDP-93 offers some subtle features, other major manufacturer's overlook. For example, bitstream audio output is standard. Most other manufacturers have PCM as standard and the user has to go into the control panel to set it to bitstream. In this day and age, shouldn't bitstream be standard??? This player features a versatile display. Other players only provide maximum time and elapsed time display. The BDP-93 also offers remaining time display as well.
Its control panel for set-up is one of the easiest to operate. You'll be functioning in less than 2 minutes compared to the competition.
The lighted remote is a plus as well. How many other players features a lighted remote?
I have only 2 negatives. As others have noted, the open/eject button on the receiver is quite small. Since this is the main button one would use away from the remote, couldn't Oppo have provided a larger button? The other negative is that their LED time display on the front of the unit is only 1/4" high, making it hard to read across a typical viewing room. Would it have been so difficult for Oppo to include a 1/2" or larger display instead?
Of course, these are quibbles. Considering all the quality features of this player at this amazing price, the Oppo BDP-93 is an important model to consider.
