Pros picture quality; streams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA over bitstream
Cons none found yet
Summary I do understand that this unit lacks an ethernet port and that will be part of the "next" BR standard. Apparently, the idea of using the port for online interactive content is somehow tied up in that requirement. However, I also own a Toshiba HD-A35 which has the port, and insofar as firmware upgrading is concerned, I always burn to CD anyway. If one is really into the future online content issue, I also understand that the Panny can do that by burning the content from your computer and putting it on a card for the reader in the player to use. Have not really verified this or paid a lot of attention to it, as what I am interested in in watching movies in dazzling and breathtaking color and clarity with stunning, clear and focused multi-channel audion reproduction, which this unit allows me to do. Currently the best Blu-ray movie player on the market at this time, IMHO, particularly due to its audio capabilities. For the new HD audio formats, one of the "newer" receivers is required as that level of decoding is apparently not done in the player.
Your mileage may vary, of course!
Pros Apparently not quite as many problems as other players
Cons Playback problems, optical out outputs only 2 ch stereo
Summary Expensive ***** - I expect a dvd player to play dvds. We own the night menu problems - that was the third DVD played on the unit.
Optical output puts out only 2 channel stereo - if you don't have an hdmi input on your receiver - you won't be able to get surround sound. Can't imagine what guided this brilliant engineering decision.
Pros outstanding dvd upconversion. excellent audio.
Cons Will not play a blu-ray disc. Period. And it's s-l-o-w to load and play dvd's and cd's.
Summary This device got great reveiws which led to my purchase. When I first got it the dvd upconversion was so good it was a few months before I even got around to obtaining any blu-ray discs. The player simply will not play them. I spent hours upon hours over many weeks trying to obtain technical support from Panasonic, all to no avail. Their final answer: 'we don't know what's wrong with it. It's your problem. Don't bother us anymore.' My experience with this Panasonic product has been so bad that I'll never buy anything Panasonic makes, ever again. Not only that, I wouldn't take a Panasonic of any description if someone GAVE it to me. Now over a year later I'm going to buy an Oppo and send this Panasonic back to Panasonic and tell them to keep it; I won't even give it away to anyone else it's so bad. A lesson learned the hard way.
Pros Color, contrast, and clearity are excellent. Love the sound too. It's the best way I've ever watched movies at home.
Cons A few titles like Star Trek (2009) and Twilight have playing issues. Freezing and skipping occur even with the latest firmware update.
Summary I like this product very much and would recommend it to friends. However, Panasonic needs to address the playback problems with the few titles I mentioned with the next firmware update.
Pros Works very well. Full bitstream, HD audio, and will play mpeg.
Cons No WMA support. No firmware update port.
Summary I got this Blu-ray player free with a Panasonic plasma screen. Great deal. Enhances all my old dvds and works great with my Denon reciever. I am set for the near future.
