Pros Great detail in audio and video. No defects noticable to me or my peers. Virtually silent in comparison to competitors. Makes friends jealous.
Cons Price (previously, has since come down, now in range with competition). Initial setup menu has badly worded instructions making you think your system isn't working. But just continue and its just fine.
Summary When this thing cost $600 I was looking at LG's, Samsungs and Panasonics, then it came down to ~$350 area and without question I snagged it up. Thus far it outperforms my roomates Samsung and my parents Panasonic in numerous categories. It seeks and loads far faster than both above mentioned (sorry unable to know model #'s off the top of my head) brands. Actually appears to be in higher, more clear definition than both as well. All other BD's I've used have been annoyingly laggy when it came to commands such as FFW RW or Skip. This does lag, but 1/10th the amount as the others I've used. Extremely happy with the BDP-51FD!
Pros I purchased this player for the features on the 7.1 Audio I purchased this one at Best Buy. I watched Grand Torino and the picture was excellent. The Player is easy to set up.I love the look of the Blu- Ray player.
Cons I would recommend ordering the update through support, I called Pioneer Support to order the update. Don't waste time with the download its much easier to order the CD.
Summary Price & features were my main reason for buying the Pioneer BDP-51 FD, The features include Doby True HD, Doby Digital Plus and DTS advanced Digital Out.DTS Master Audio, Linear PCM, DTS High Resolution Audio, MPEG and MPEG-2 AAC.The player also has 7.1 outputs to a AV reciver. With these features the player out performs Sony and Panasonic players. A great player to build a Home Theater with. I am adding the Pioneer AV Receiver next month, I cant wait to get the Home theater set up completely. I would recommend this Blu-Ray player to anyone looking for a great Audio and Picture Player.I paid $200.00 at Best Buy, The Player out performs Sony in Sound & Picture Quality.

Pros Great sound and image when is working
Cons Each firmware upgate will solve one problem but will create other. Customer support is blank (figure...)
Summary I bought this unit thinking that I will get the best on the market for this price ... but I was totally wrong. I passed through two units because I just wanted to give a chance to this model. I just want to mention that I performed the test who revealed the glitches at dealer's site and they come with the same bad results so it wasn't the way I've got the unit hooked up. As well, the Pioneer Electronics site is totally useless: there is no way to contact by e-mail someone knowledgeable and the technician I was talking by phone seemed completely blank thus unusable. My problem was that I bought the player with the version 1.08 loaded: in this case, as Pioneer states, if I tried to switch the video out from HDMI to S-Video, the unit will freeze so it needed to be unplugged. After upgrade (version 1.25a) which solved this problem, a even worse one occurred: if a BluRay disc was played and for whatever reason you will turn the unit off, when turned back on, it will resume without sound. This doesn't apply to DVD discs. The only way to get back the sound for the BluRay would be hard resetting the unit (stop power) which is totally annoying. So finally, I switched to a way more stable unit, Panasonic BD-55. You just have to know that my other DVD players in house are just Pioneer so I'm not a hater, but this time, they didn't get it right. It's ridiculous to spend this amount of money for something that plainly don't work as it should, so I will stick from now with the newly discovered brand. Sounds funny but I checked the Internet and I found no updates or opinions.after latest firmware release.
If some suggestions are to be made, my e-mail address is: mailto:email@example.com
Pros Great picture reproduction
Cons Constant freezing problems that each iteration of firmware is not fixing. Shame on you Pioneer...for the price this should be bug free.
Summary DON'T BUY!
"Great BD Player."on by ArmyChief3
Pros Puchased on sale at Best Buy good deal. Upconverts regular DVD movies really improves the movie watching. I don't have to rebuy the movies I already have saves me a lot of money. Loads most movie discs in 30 sec or less, even Blue Rays.
Cons Didn't know about firmware updates to keep player current to play all the BD formats. Took me about 45 minutes to upgarde the firmware, but once updated okay. Another small con player is larger than regular DVD players.
Summary Great player was under $200. I really am surprised at the good quality of the unit. Fits well with my SONY 40" BRAVIA and 5.1 Surround sound set up. For movies and sound this is a great buy!
