Pros Fast and displays a great picture
Supports many formats
Very easy to set up
Small compact size
Cons No social media support
Summary I have not bought a dvd or blu ray player for a few years so I was pretty amazed at how small these things are these days, it is a little over half the size of my original Sky HD box! The player arrived nicely packed and included batteries for the remote (no HDMI lead was included) Very easy to set up and was ready to go inside 5 minutes.Edit:
Was walked through the initial set up (time zones, wi fi etc) and was immediately prompted to download the latest firmware, this updated without any issues whatsoever. Tried a Blu-ray and the machine showed just how fast it is with this, I know from experience, some players can take a long time to actually start playing the disk, this machine however is lightning quick.
I tried a DVD to test the up-scaling capabilities, it did a very good job, a lot better than my PC Blu-ray player which is attached to the same TV, all very impressive! I also attached a 1TB hard drive to the player via the USB port, was happy to see the player has enough grunt to power the drive, the HD contained many formats and I was happy to see there was nothing which refused to play. It also picked up many different kinds of subtitle files. The video playing side of things are excellent on this player, you will not be disappointed there.
The players menu is very similar to that of the PS3's, it is not quiet as high definition though, seemed a little blockier in places and did seem a little sluggish in places. I tried both Netflix and Iplayer and they both operated as well as can be expected, the Netflix plugin is identical to that of the WDTV Live. The player also features an opera browser although this is quiet frankly rubbish, when displaying the browser on a 1920x1080p screen, it does not manage to fill the screen, you end up with black borders around which looks rubbish! Half the sites I attempted to load did not work, the opera browser seems to request the mobile version of websites which looks like a complete mess on a big screen, I went through the very limited browser settings and there is no way to change this. if you are hoping for a permanent internet fix with this player, forget it, very very frustrating.
I was also a little disappointed that this player has no social media support, no Facebook or Twitter is surprising. You will also notice on the final menu page an option allowing you to download extra apps through the Opera store, once you try to do this though, you are greeted with the message "This item is not supported on your device".... why list it then?
For a simple player, this device is fantastic, its fast and displays a great picture + it supports so many formats. The problems lies with the smart settings, they feel half baked, if you only need Netflix and Iplayer, you may still be happy. I feel the device could of offered an extra USB connection although you could buy a USB hub I guess. As the only USB connection is at the front, this will look messy.
