"BDP-S500 or S5000? Anyway, great unit. Nice 1080p reproduction." on by nedbosik
Pros: Excellent Blu-ray playback. Great standard disc upscaler.
Cons: Some discs loading is VERY long. Pricey.
Summary: I got the Toshiba HD-A35 as well as this player, so I'm not a psychotic fanboy of either format. I love having full HD in my environment. I would give the Toshiba a SLIGHT edge over the Sony in the HD department. The Sony has a much better upscaler, in my opinion. So standard dvd's look great on this unit.
The one issue I do have is the Sony takes a while to boot-up and some discs take a very long time to load. This "Live Free or Die-Hard" disc I have takes 5 minutes! Brand new disc, not dirty or anything. So go figure. The Sony player are still bloody expensive. Still in the early adopter phase I guess. -
"Excellent Player - Worth Every Cent" on by sharkstopper
Pros: Outstanding sound and picture quality
Cons: Very slow start up time
Summary: The sound and picture quality is truly outstanding. This player also does a fine job of upconverting my regular DVDs. The only downside to the Sony is that it is very slow to start, i.e., "boot up." The editor's note about the new DTS may not be accurate. Just last night, I played a Blue-Ray disc that was in DTS, and my Yamaha receiver's display seemed to indicate that it was playing in the new DTS.

"It's a great Blu-ray player" on by marktom1
Pros: fast, beautiful video, great audio
Cons: up-convert is only good
Summary: I am very impressed with this machine. After buying the Samsung BD-p1400 and the Panasonic BD-30K and being a little disappointed, I bought the Sony BDP-S500 and I am very pleased. It seems to do everything better than the others. The Panasonic did a nice job but not as good as the Sony. I have to question any review that refers to an HD machine. If you like HD, go with HD, but don't cut down the other format. I see this over and over on **********. I think it is pretty sad. Let's play fair guys. Judge Blu-ray on it's own merits. This is not a political war.

"piece of junk" on by medwid12
Pros: I like the color
Cons: If you install a movie you have a 50 50 change of it loading. If it loads at all you may die of old age before it is complete. But more likely it will never load. This can be a bit embarassing when you are having people over to watch this great blu ray.
Summary: This piece of junk cost me almost 800.00 we the extended warranty. Now i have to spend 300.00 more on a Panasonic

"breaks frequently and requires a lot of service" on by leejdwyer
Pros: When I purchased this item I was delighted with the features of the Unit but was quickly disappointed when I review other units from Panasonic. While it has a sleek design, heavy duty construction the quality stops there.
Cons: Loads extremely -s 4 or 5 minutes.Broke frequently. My unit wasn't even 1 year old or less than 100 hours service & then broke. I sent it in for Sony repair for $140 & 3 months later & 30 hours of usage broke again. Sony help center-was terr
Summary: Sony has gone down hill, overrated-overpriced. Buy a Panasonic! My unit loaded slowly and broke so many times (2 time in less than 6 months) Sony wanted $140 every time to repair. Their helps centers have people who barely speak English and cant help at all. Were very rude to me and when I explained to them the repair needs, they were rude.
This unit promised a lot, cost a lot and int truth is not as good as the Samsung or Panasonic models for 1/2 the price.
This unit relies on a sexy finish and a remote with a ton of functions. But does not have any of the essential cable or wireless, or USB connections of a Panasonic!
Really disappointed- I will never buy Sony again!
