Cons No cd, cassette, am/fm playback capability. Video output cord not included. Unit's cord is only about 6 feet, so it must sit on a desk or nothing taller than 4-5 feet.
Summary BACK STORY: I originally purchased the Sony CMT-LX20i Ipod docking station and was NOT impressed with the playback sound, I thought the CD player was a bonus in case there were songs I wanted to listen to, but had yet to put them on my Ipod touch. But my biggest gripe was the tiny black/red wires I had to plug into the unit's speakers. So after having had the unit for two nights, I was on a mission to find its replacement.
Naturally, I thought of Bose, but with its price tag, I wanted to make sure I was buying a quality item and not the brand. So I did a search of the best ipod docking stations and Cnet had suggested the Altec lansing Octiv 650, with it being in my target price range (and the trusted reviews of Cnet) I purchased it three days ago. I am quite pleased overall with the product. I've listened to the Bose docking system and I can find very little difference between the two systems. I would recommend this product for those looking for good sounding ipod docking station that is reasonably priced. -
"Great sound if it ever works again!"
on by qmorrisseyPros Great sound when it played. I miss it now that the music has stopped. We had a couple of events at our home and the sound was simply fantastic. Let's hope they resolve this issue. I'm waiting to see if they fix the problems, sounds that good.
Cons This model has issues with Apple's newest software, IOS 5. A firmware update is needed in order for it to work. We don't have a date as of yet that this will be available, it may be a few wks to a month. Replacing the unit won't fix the issue.
Summary Flawed logic from the Altec Lansing Customer Service as follows: "We have been made aware that some of our units are having issues with Apple's newest software, IOS 5. Our engineers are working with Apple to find a resolution to this problem, most likely will be in a form of a firmware update. We don't have a date as of yet that this will be available, it may be a few wks to a month. So replacing the unit most likely won't fix your issue. Would you like to wait for the resolution of the problem or would you like to be set up for a refund?"
How can only SOME of the units have this problem? Why is the company unable to replace it? I'm left wondering if it is a crap shoot buying this product? Hope not, because it has a great sound. Due to the problems I can only give this unit a three star rating. If it is fixed I will write an update review for this Model. -

on by DucpondPros If you are able to see a demonstration, the product does perform on many sound quality levels. Controls are clumsy and non-intuitive. But...
Cons ... does not work with IOS 5. Altec has known since last year, refuses to inform, address, or refund. Same standard answer as why their equalizer app does not work, "...working with Apple, no fix date...".
Summary Kind of hard to recommend a product when its manufacturer admittably does not stand by the quality or performance.
