The Z2: B&W's new $400 Lightning-equipped AirPlay speaker
For those of you who think the speaker dock is dead, Bowers & Wilkins doesn't seem to agree, launching two new wireless AirPlay speakers, both of which feature Lightning docks for Apple's latest iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPod Nanos.
We got our hands on an early review sample of the Z2, the successor to the Zeppelin Mini. As you might expect from Bowers & Wilkins, it's a great-looking little speaker and it sounds very good for its size, putting out a lot of sound with punchy bass. It also isn't cheap at $399.99.
The black version of the Z2 is due to hit stores in April, while a white model is set to arrive in May. Neither supports Bluetooth streaming, just Apple's AirPlay wireless technology, which works over Wi-Fi and offers better sound quality.
Bowers & Wilkins is also set to ship a Lightning-equipped version of its Zeppelin Air speaker, which the company says is the No. 1 best-selling AirPlay speaker. According to Bowers & Wilkins, the new Zeppelin Air will sound virtually identical to the original and will ship in June with a price tag of $599.99.
We'll have a full review of the Z2 in the coming weeks and a review of the updated Zeppelin Air when it launches.
