Manufacturer: Cisco Systems Inc.

Manufacturer description

The Linksys PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter Kit PLK200 is the perfect solution for high-speed, "no new wires", home or office networking. The Powerline AV Ethernet kit comes with two Powerline AV Ethernet Adapters and two Ethernet cables. The first adapter can connect with the included Ethernet cable into a broadband wired or wireless router via the LAN port on the router, then the adapter plugs into a power outlet in the wall. The second Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter can then be plugged into a computer other networked device with the Ethernet cable via the Ethernet port and the other end of the adapter is then plugged into a power outlet within the home. The need for two power line adapters are required to share a broadband connection and access other devices connected to the network. Up to 16 other computers or devices on a network utilizing a PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter can access the Internet connection or each other.

Product summary

The goodThe good: Easy to set up and maintain; fast throughput; 128-bit encryption; 24-7 phone support.

The badThe bad: Pricy compared to setting up a wireless network; adapters are a bit bulky and may block adjacent outlets.

The bottom lineThe bottom line: The Linksys PLK200 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit is one of the easiest ways to set up and maintain a home network that's fast enough to stream HD video content, but it's a bit of a strain on the pocketbook.

Worst. Product. Ever. (by Cisco)

Pros: Simple set up, uhh -very lightweight? - nice putty color? - readable labels?

Cons: It stops working after about a month. Wish I could give it less than a half-star.

Review: If you like getting your workouts one crunch at a time, buy this worthless little paperweight. You need to bend over to unplug it to "reboot" this awful little piece of ethernet bridge fail. It gets hot, stays hot, and (apparently) melts into the worthless piece of slag I have plugged in to the wall right now. Oh, this review- took 3 reboots so far to type in. The instant my IRS refund hits, I'm getting a wireless booster for my MOTOROLA Surfbrd, or a big antenna, maybe I'll MacGruber something together out of paper towel tubes and paper clips - ANYthing has got to be better than this "workaround". Cisco's QC used to be gold-plated. Now, it's right down in the cellar with Dell. Shame, Cisco, shame.

I needed a connection from a distant point in my house

Pros: Plugged it in a two family house with different electric meters. I was connected in seconds, with great speed.

Cons: I guess price was the only fault I found

Review: If you have an out of reach connection from WiFi, this is your answer!

how slow can you go?

Pros: easy setup

Cons: really, really, really slow

Review: What false advertising. Says it can go up to 200Mbps but usually 100Mbps. I have new wiring and in the same room it only goes 15Mbps. What a scam.

Great product, works out of the box

Pros: Very easy to install and use

Cons: Somewhat clumsy, Ethernet cables are a bit on the short side

Review: I wanted to create a flexible LAN in my apartment so that I could use internet on my laptop no matter where it was. This means, among other things, that I can watch digital channels on my old analog tv by connecting my laptop to my tv. These adapters are ideal for such situations. I just needed to change the default password in both adapters, connect one to my router and the other to my laptop. Speed varies somewhat, dependent on which outlet the adapter is plugged into, but always remains at least ten times faster than my ADSL connection, so no problem there. And the adapter that is connected to my router, uses a multiple outlet that has eight(!) other devices connected, but that doesn't seem to affect signal quality. Long live LinkSys.

Works well with minimal setup.

Pros: Effective, simple, enough throughput to stream HD media.

Cons: None that I can mention

Review: To be honest I have not seen any of the problems other users hae mentioned. In fact, these powerline adapters proved to be a near perfect solution for my home network expansion. My wireless connection was not strong enough to carrry an adequate signal from my home office on the second floor to the living room on the first floor. I've tried different pieces of equipment to improve my wireless signal but none of them had the desired effect. This is the first product I've tried that brought a strong network signal downstairs and allowed me to stream HD content from my computer through a media extender.

Easy installation and reliable connection

Pros: Easy installation; Works where wireless failed; High speed connection

Cons: A little expensive, but prices have fallen and there's no hassle.

Review: The powerline adapters were the perfect solution to wire up a 1950s church building. Wireless didn't work at all through all the masonry, but the Linksys adapters installed easily and worked flawlessly with no setup hassles.

Cisco should be ashamed of its sub

Pros: Easy to Use

Cons: Runs too hot

Review: This product does what it is advertised. Speed coming in from a fiber optic line to the wall jack was 100. Build quality is junk...runs very hot. Every attempt by Linksys to cut corners was in this product. Product should not run this out. Will give it a shot and return to Cisco/Linksys if there is safety issue. I have noticed that lately that Linksys products are junky in quality.

Great product, just bought additional units

Pros: easy to set up and use

Cons: nothing, great product

Review: I had been having issues using wireless to my xbox360 from my media center PC. I gave the PLK200 a try and could not have been more pleased. I then added a little hub to the output and run my Slingbox and Xbox trough the units with great success. I'm very pleased with the product.

Awesome, Worked as expected

Pros: VERY Simple and Fast Setup, Awesome Speed

Cons: None at this time

Review: Setup took about 2 minutes hassle free. I ran this up from my basement up two stories into my office in one of my bedrooms. Worked flawlessly and I am easily getting 80MB+ speed. HIGHLY RECOMMEND over wireless and hard wiring.

Great range, and very easy setup

Pros: Easy setup, + 400 feet of geographic range, high speed data

Cons: conection intermittent on some plugs (could be due to long distance)

Review: I needed to get a wireless connection (think clearwire) which was available up the hill behind my house (at the well-pump house) about 400 feet to my house. I considered a wireless router with a directional antenna, but this seemed like a system that might be prone to trouble, so I tried the PLK200, and am quite impressed.

High throughput, very easy...Great. In one wall outlet tested, the connection would drop periodically, possibly older wiring in that part of the house, or some interference, but in another outlet, the system works great.

For what they do, they are great!

Pros: Instant Network!

Cons: Other devices can interfere with signal.

Review: These devices do exactly what they say they do; allow you to use your electrical network as a conduit for networking. There are some requirements.

First, the two (or more) locations the devices are plugged into must be on the
same electrical circuit. If the outlets are not connected to each other, it can’t work.

Second, it can not be behind a surge protector, ups, line conditioner or any device that would impede the signal.

Third, no devices that pollute or interfere with the signal can be between or adjacent to these devices on the electrical system or they will interfere.

Sound like a long list? Not really. It can all be easily summed up as plug these things directly into the wall and put all your other nearby devices on a surge protector.

Personally my favorite use for these babies is in concert with my wireless network. I have a wireless router plugged into my cable modem upstairs and another downstairs wireless router, plugged into my upstairs router via the Linksys Powerline AV units. (Do not use the WAN port on the second router) Use the same SSID and Security on both routers; disable DHCP on the downstairs one and presto! Full house coverage!

The only reason I didn't give a 10 is they are bulky and awkward.

CNET Gets it Wrong Again!

Pros: Cheaper than upgrading wireless, and it works!

Cons: None so far.

Review: Expensive??? Okay, I tried to upgrade my badly performing wireless by buying a new wireless-n router and a new wireless-n card. Cost - $265. This purchase did NOTHING to improve the range of my network, nor did it solve the dropped signal problem. The PLK200 solved all of the problems and did it for $200, a savings of $65! Not only that, but it solved the problem I had with my neighbor stealing wireless bandwidth and trying to get me sued by the RIAA.

Sometimes I wonder if CNET editors and reviewers have any clue what consumers are actually looking for in a product.

Where Wireless Just Won't Work

Pros: Easy to set up; great Linksys name & support; smooths out the "peaks & valleys".

Cons: Easy to set up; great Linksys name & support; smooths out the "peaks & valleys".

Review: Living in a large 2-storey house, I just could not get a consistant wireless signal for my Dell laptop. I tried changing locations of the router; tried different routers; tried boosters, etc. Signal strength would be fine, then would start dropping the signal or reduce the strength so low, it was useless.

Then I heard about homeplug devices and that Linksys was re-introducing their Powerline product. After researching the different other various homeplug devices, I settled on Linksys for two reasons...first, the Linksys reputation and the fact that I've never had a problem with any Linksys product. Second, from reading various reviews, Linksys seemed to be the only supplier that provided free tech support.

I ordered the PLK200 kit (2 units) and an additional PLE200. Set up was fast and extremely easy and I say this as a complete newbie when it comes to doing anything like this. The set up wizard took about 2 minutes per unit and you instantly had a "wired" network using the house wiring.

I have used the Powerline adapter now throughout the weekend, trying it in every area of our large house and signal strength and availability has been constant throughtout. These products have really solved my problem and I would recommend them to anyone.

There was no option for a 0 rating

Pros: Easy set up

Cons: Will not work unless the units are on the same breaker circuit!

Review: I needed to connect my garage to my house. The two are on the same power meter. The units connected and operated as long as they were on the same circuit breaker. When I tried to operate with one unit in the garage and one in the home, no connection. This is a common situation where you have outlets in a home on different breakers. You would be limited to a 20 amps for all your home outlets if they were all on the same circuit. Anyway, you should be cautious about buying this product if you are planning to operate them in different rooms or you have an outbuilding you want to get networked.

I also noticed that within 20 minutes both units were fairly hot. This may lead to early failure in the units.

By the way, I boxed these up after two hours and a session with Linksys support. The solution from Linksys was to try to get the units on the same line.

I have trusted Linksys for years but this product really disappointed me.

Linksys PLK200 works when CAT5 cable is unavailable.

Pros: Even though it's a bridge it works when CAT5 cable isn't available

Cons: You may need to add a multi-outlet adapter in some cases

Review: I don't have Ethernet cabling in my house, (yet). I have a need to interconnect 3 routers, (as well as my Slingbox). I plugged a total of 4, (2 PLK200 kits), into my wall outlets and even though they are bridges, the throughput is good enough to allow everything to work together.

RMA Nightmare

Pros: It was good while it worked.

Cons: Apparently has already been discontinued.

Review: Installation was easy and product worked well for 3 weeks. 1 unit failed and I am now up to 5 calls of 30 minutes each to tech support and customer service (neither appear to be US based) trying to get a replacement. I was told today by customer service that the product has been discontinued and they will get back to me at some point in the (hopefully near) future.
