  • "Where Wireless Just Won't Work"
    on by Terry155

Pros Easy to set up; great Linksys name & support; smooths out the "peaks & valleys".

Cons Easy to set up; great Linksys name & support; smooths out the "peaks & valleys".

Summary Living in a large 2-storey house, I just could not get a consistant wireless signal for my Dell laptop. I tried changing locations of the router; tried different routers; tried boosters, etc. Signal strength would be fine, then would start dropping the signal or reduce the strength so low, it was useless.

Then I heard about homeplug devices and that Linksys was re-introducing their Powerline product. After researching the different other various homeplug devices, I settled on Linksys for two reasons...first, the Linksys reputation and the fact that I've never had a problem with any Linksys product. Second, from reading various reviews, Linksys seemed to be the only supplier that provided free tech support.

I ordered the PLK200 kit (2 units) and an additional PLE200. Set up was fast and extremely easy and I say this as a complete newbie when it comes to doing anything like this. The set up wizard took about 2 minutes per unit and you instantly had a "wired" network using the house wiring.

I have used the Powerline adapter now throughout the weekend, trying it in every area of our large house and signal strength and availability has been constant throughtout. These products have really solved my problem and I would recommend them to anyone.

    Pros Easy set up

Cons Will not work unless the units are on the same breaker circuit!

Summary I needed to connect my garage to my house. The two are on the same power meter. The units connected and operated as long as they were on the same circuit breaker. When I tried to operate with one unit in the garage and one in the home, no connection. This is a common situation where you have outlets in a home on different breakers. You would be limited to a 20 amps for all your home outlets if they were all on the same circuit. Anyway, you should be cautious about buying this product if you are planning to operate them in different rooms or you have an outbuilding you want to get networked.

I also noticed that within 20 minutes both units were fairly hot. This may lead to early failure in the units.

By the way, I boxed these up after two hours and a session with Linksys support. The solution from Linksys was to try to get the units on the same line.

I have trusted Linksys for years but this product really disappointed me.

  • "Linksys PLK200 works when CAT5 cable is unavailable."
    on by jimmyd99

Pros Even though it's a bridge it works when CAT5 cable isn't available

Cons You may need to add a multi-outlet adapter in some cases

Summary I don't have Ethernet cabling in my house, (yet). I have a need to interconnect 3 routers, (as well as my Slingbox). I plugged a total of 4, (2 PLK200 kits), into my wall outlets and even though they are bridges, the throughput is good enough to allow everything to work together.

  • "RMA Nightmare"
    on by lcberry

Pros It was good while it worked.

Cons Apparently has already been discontinued.

Summary Installation was easy and product worked well for 3 weeks. 1 unit failed and I am now up to 5 calls of 30 minutes each to tech support and customer service (neither appear to be US based) trying to get a replacement. I was told today by customer service that the product has been discontinued and they will get back to me at some point in the (hopefully near) future.

  • "Awesome, Worked as expected"
    on by bkapla1

Pros VERY Simple and Fast Setup, Awesome Speed

    Cons None at this time

Summary Setup took about 2 minutes hassle free. I ran this up from my basement up two stories into my office in one of my bedrooms. Worked flawlessly and I am easily getting 80MB+ speed. HIGHLY RECOMMEND over wireless and hard wiring.
