Product summary
The good: Firefox 3 touts faster rendering, vastly reduced use of system resources, clever new data-mining tools for your bookmarks and browser history, and more security features than any other browser.
The bad: Firefox 3 will no longer support Windows 95, 98, and Me; same with Mac OS X, versions 10.2 and earlier.
The bottom line: If only for the speed, lightness of being, and security alone, Firefox remains our Editors' Choice for best Internet browser.
Editors' review
- Editors' Choice: Yes
- Reviewed on: 06/17/2008
After months of testing, Firefox 3 (code name Gran Paradiso) is available for download from Mozilla. With its new Gekko 1.9 engine, the browser rocks, rendering pages faster and uses fewer system resources overall. As with any new browser, some add-ons created for Firefox 2 may not work, but give them time. Firefox 3 touts faster rendering, a vastly reduced use of system resources, and clever new data-mining tools for your bookmarks and browser history. Most notable is that Firefox 3 includes many security-related features baked right in, such as the best of breed antiphishing protection, making Firefox the most secure browser on the market today. If you haven't already tried Firefox, what are you waiting for? Firefox 3 remains our Editors' Choice over Microsoft Internet Explorer and Opera. See our slide show of Firefox 3's basic features, and its various security features.
Firefox 3 is free, and available on a variety of operating systems: Windows, Mac, and Linux. There are also a wide variety of localized language versions, including Basque and Byelorussian. Unlike IE 7, Firefox 3 does not require a system reboot.
The interface is the same in some places, but different in others. Placement of buttons hasn't changed, but the icons are new. Firefox 3 now provides a native look and feel (for example, the Linux version matches the Linux user interface), and smooth scrolling of open browser tabs. What will draw the eye are more icons near and within the address bar itself. A company logo, if available, will appear before the URL; after the URL there's the new one-click bookmark star and the familiar RSS icon. Other tweaks include those to the Password manager, Add-Ons manager, and Download manager.
Returning within Firefox 3 are several core features, such as Sessions Restore, built-in spell checking, integrated search, pop-up blocker, clear private data, and automated behind-the-scenes updates.
Most exciting among the brand new features is the improved rendering speed thanks to the new Gekko 1.9 engine. Firefox 3 passes the Acid2 Browser Test, along with Safari 3 and Opera 9. The test, designed by the Web Standards Project, is designed to encourage designers to follow HTML and CSS 2.0 specifications. Currently Internet Explorer 7 does not pass, but Microsoft says Internet Explorer 8 is expected to follow Web specifications.
The Gekko 1.9 rendering engine will, however, introduce some inconveniences. Firefox 3 will no longer support Windows 95, 98, and Me; the same with Mac OS X, versions 10.2 and earlier. There will also be numerous changes made to the Document Object Model (DOM) within Gekko 1.9 that will affect developers more than users. Also, there will be changes in the way Firefox renders frames within its display and the way object tags are handled, as well as changes in event threading.
For a user, the project known as Places is worthy of praise, as it creates a light database of history, bookmarks, and tags within the browser that can be searched, sorted, and organized. How you access the database gives rise to many new features within Firefox 3.
One obvious change is the Smart Location Bar (aka "awesome bar"). As you type in a URL, the awesome bar searches through your history and bookmarks and presents a drop-down list of recently accessed pages with that same keyword. It works even if you already know the URL. Some people have found it to be annoying, so there is a way to disable it requiring a small tweak to the about:config file. An Add-On further allows you to learn which of the search results you want to always be on top.
Immediately after the URL and just before the RSS icon is the new Star icon. Click it once to store the page's URL as a bookmark; click it twice to assign the bookmark to a new or existing folder. You can also give it tags: short keywords to help when searching through your bookmarks. Use the new Library feature to create and store searches.
Also new is Full Page Zoom. Unlike Opera, Firefox hides the Zoom feature within the View toolbar option and doesn't increment: just big or small. Hopefully Mozilla will refine this feature in Firefox 4.
Enhancements within Firefox 3 include changes to the Add-Ons manager. Now Firefox presents a list of popular Add-Ons without redirecting your browser to a Web page. From the manager you can install the recommended Add-Ons directly. There is still a link to the addons.mozilla.org page where you can find more than 5,000 add-ons written for Firefox.
Another enhancement is within the Download Manager. Mozilla has added search and improved the ability to start and resume downloads.
There are also numerous security features such as Malware and Phishing protection, Instant Web site ID, support for the Extended Validation Secure Socket Layer (EV SSL), enhancements to the Password manager, and greater security for Add-Ons.
For developers there are new Web-based content handlers, greater search engine keyword support, a new password manager, something called Extension Manager (EM), the beginnings of an intentity network, better integration with Mac OS X's look and feel, some offline applications support, and site specific preferences. There's also an early look at FUEL (Firefox User Extension Library), a JavaScript library designed to make it easier for extension developers by minimizing XPCOM formality and using more "modern" JavaScript ideas.
As for performance, Firefox 3 does significantly reduce the amount of system resources used when compared with Firefox 2. That alone makes Firefox 3 a worthy upgrade. Throughout our informal testing at CNET, Firefox 3 has been stable enough for day-to-day office use since Beta 5. Although there have been some minor, intermittent glitches when accessing Google-related pages, those problems appear to have been addressed in the final release. The performance, features, and security make Firefox 3 stand out as the best Internet browser available today.
But wait, there's more. Following Firefox 3 comes early word of Firefox 3.1. Features expected within the next incremental release include tab previews and autocomplete for tagging bookmarks. An Alpha for Firefox 3.1 is expected to be available sometime in July 2008.

FFF - FireFox Freezing
Pros: Secure, organize, simplicity, easy to use
Cons: Freezing and then crashing, thereby hanging up my entire PC.
Three tabs in firefox are eating up 380,000 KB Memory(PWS), while 4 tabs google chrome is 179,751 KB Memory (PWS)
I like firefox [using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729)] because it's secure, fast but it's freezing then crashing almost all the time.

FireFox 3 is New Coke, FireFox 2 Coca-Cola Classic
Pros: Honestly, I can't think of any.
Cons: - bookmarks organized in weird sub-folder now
- bookmarks disappear without warning if you add them to another folder.
- Can't easily add bookmarks to multiple folders
- crashes often in YouTube
- no setting to make tab default to homepage
The first time I upgraded, FireFox 3 would crash about every 5 minutes while watching videos on YouTube, which was unacceptable so I downgraded.
The second time I was perplexed how things I knew I had bookmarked kept disappearing, I thought I was losing my mind. Then I realized that FireFox 3 has an annoying new feature that will, without warning or notification, remove a bookmark from the folder you previously bookmarked it to when you chose to bookmark it to an additional bookmark folder. This feature is so annoying I chose to downgrade it to FireFox 2.0 eventually. I like to save certain URLs under multiple folders if they fit multiple categories. This makes it quick and easy to browse to them using just the mouse (click, mouse move down, click and you're there). The new FireFox 3.0 has a tags option which is interesting but the fact they dis-allow you to save you to multiple folders and even more dangerously remove your bookmark from it's old spot without warning or notification is not very customer friendly. I tried to see if there was a setting to override this behaviour but there does not appear to be. Sure some argue that you can tag the bookmarks, but that requires typing in the tags which takes longer, especially if you are not a good typer. Also, the fact that FireFox would override your decision where you explicitly go out of your way to put something is along the mind-set of MicroSoft, I am really disappointed FireFox would do something like this.
I also don't like how I am welcomed to tabbed browsing everytime I open a new tab, once would be alright, but after that I'd like to set this to open my homepage or another page of my choice.
I was completely happy with FireFox 2.0 the way it is. FireFox should not change the behaviour of their browser without providing a setting to change it to the old behaviour.

Free, Fast, but Flawed
Pros: The familiarity and security of FireFox makes it my favorite. FireFox 3 is faster than previous releases.
Cons: As a user of Facebook, social networking and gaming website, FireFox 3 is unreliable and flawed. From errors to crashes, navigating Facebook is a challenge for this browser. Occasionally logging onto the Site causes screen freezing!

Lost ALL business links and passwords
Pros: Nothing yet.
Cons: The upgrade was suggested for "security" reasons. Afterwards, I discoverd that every business link to around 300 manufacturers and all login info and passwords were deleted and replaced by whatever was in Explorer. HORRIBLE!
It was recommended that I upgrade to the newest version of Firefox "for security reasons" according to them. I did this last night.
I'm the Director of Sales for POS Paradise. We sell commercial electronics from around 300 manufacturers.
This morning, horror of horrors, I discovered that every single link to those manufacturers was gone except two. Furthermore, every single password to logins for those manufacturers was also gone. In fact, without prompting or asking if I wanted to import my links and such from Explorer, the upgrade did it automatically.
It wiped out completely all of the information that was previously stored in Firefox prior to the upgrade.
How sweet is that? I've contacted them online in glowing terms exactly how happy I am.

A Reasonable Browser
Pros: It is generally reliable, has many worthwhile extensions, and is so customizable. Everything works and there are so many choices of what to do.
Cons: Firefox constantly, and for no reason, will eat up every bit of your CPU capacity, no matter how big a chip is. This slows the computer badly and is terribly frustrating. it ocurrs all the time and you have to be ready to have a backup Browser!

The latest version 3.5.3 is horrible. Constant crashes.
Pros: Firefox is a great browser. But the newest version has a ton of problems.
Cons: They really messed up though with the latest version. Go to their web site and see how many people are having problems. I uninstalled it and went back to FF 3.0.14. So many others are using other browsers now.

Internal server errors on many sites
Pros: none that I've found
Cons: Used Firefox 3.5 and liked it. 3.5.3 freezes, crashes and has "internal server errors" on many sites. Also is much slower. Don't even try TV Guide listings, the drop downs for time and date freeze the browser.

slows MS Vista OS to crawlo
Pros: Old Reputation for internet security, open access, ease of use ....
Cons: On HP dual core operating Win Vista OS .... Vista tools claimed Firefox 3.2.5 cause of 275 seconds to log off/shut off. FireFox site has lots of complaints of slow (opposite of CNET) ... I don't know if it is FireFox or ? causing win freezing

Don't Bother!
Pros: There are NONE
Cons: There are ALLOT!
I was an early user and stood by their product through update after update and still to this day use it. However, over time this browser has become something of a joke. Instead of becoming more stable and more lightweight it has become a sad disaster. It crashes, loads slowly, freezes up, stalls, you name it!
At this point even Internet Explorer is seeming appealing. It is really sad to see that Firefox has lost it's grip on what really counts...STABILITY!
The only reason most people use it is because they think it's more stable and more secure than IE. Well, my friends...it's reputation is as such but what you are getting now is anything but that. Don't bother with it! You will be very disappointed.

FireFox is crap.
Pros: To show that IE doesn't have a monopoly...
on stupidity.
Cons: The entire anti-IE premise of FF is completely wrong.
Not only that, it's socially a waste of time -- browser compability -- get real already!!!
It's irresponsible, and a showcase of incompetence.
It's amateur and out of control.
Worst of all, they are emulating even the worst aspects of their competitor, and becoming worse than them .. ie, IE.
To prove this, just look at XMLHTTPRequest -- doesn't allow cross-domain requests. URL's should be resources, just like disk drives. Should you disallow a disk drive not in your domain, if it is publically available.. of course not, they are just too lazy to do it right and clearly understand security, instead of turning off functionality!
Even IE supports true Javascript serialization through function toString(); FF does not.
FireFox has bugs in its head.. and is pompous.. it should be simply extensions to IE and be backward compatible to it. If anything, it should enforce MIME types in HTML code!!!!! So if you have an IE HTML it will honor it.
FireFox has no organization, no peer review power. And it's really beginning to show and it's unresolvable. Abandon ship now!!
FireFox is crap.
A new open source browser that supports and honors HTML mimes is the solution. period.
And W3C is absolutely lame. How can they make specifications, and not implement a browser for it? Browsers should be ISO standardized by .... now .... they should respect legacy browsers like IE, FF/Mozilla, but come up with a better spec, and allow for all of these to coexist through HTML mime type.
The new standard should be a stronger XML, and a much stronger XSLT, with true compiler, macro, and extension capability. in a modular, distributed intelligence model. Just ridiculous, how so many people in this world, can agree to be stupid.
And most of it iis due to the sick state of "education","certified" brainwashed education that doesn't teach underlying principles of thought, creativity, diversity, standards, courage, organization, and reward.
Despicable waste of time... except to protest it.

1 Nanosecond does not a browser make.
Pros: Not a big deal. IE works a nano slower - but who can count that low? Quicker they say? I don't see it.
Cons: By the time you download all the addons for RealPlayer, QuickTime, etc., you've added more weight than ever gained. Zoom is Big or Normal - no increments like IE. And Firefox is actually slower for news broadcasts.

Firefox is ok
Pros: The add-ons, I think that's about it.
Cons: It's almost like IE, comes default with basically every Linux distro I have ever tried (and I have tried more than one), everyone seems to like it (blah!), you have to restart it every time you install an add-on (retarded)
So honestly, I say **** Firefox in the long run, I'll stick with Opera.

This is a great browser.
Pros: I have been using IE for a long time, but because it's a slower browser and i get a lot of error messages, i decided to give Firefox a try. I found this browser to be very fast and stable. I think they did a great job. Great browser.
Cons: There is nothing i don't like about this browser.

Faster than IE? NOT!
Pros: That it's not IE is a biggie. I liked the way it worked with Google Toolbar
Cons: SLOW! Memory hog. At times took 10 minutes for browser to reset, with a "Firefox already open. Please close, or log off to reopen" message. Support non-existent. User forums only. They emailed me & asked my opinion, never responded. Just lame!

Bye bye Firefox! let me know when it's fixed
Pros: works ok when it works
Cons: started crashing continuously yesterday and sites that had always worked well.
I scanned with Trend Micro and MalwareBytes and nothing showed up on the scan.
The other thing I disliked about Firefox is that the cursor would stop working. Firefox is well aware of this and the workaround is to tap the scroll wheel.
I'll probably give it another chance after they have another release but the current one is buggy and I'm not going to use it any more.

Cons: Firefox Add Ons and Firefox keep opening up tabs other than my designated Homepage and there is guidance or help to speak of to sort the problem out unless you are a techno geek!

Awesome collection of new well implemented features
Pros: It's getting even more intuitive than ever. The Awesome Bar is really awesome. Not only can you find easily addresses related to what you have just started typing but you may tag them with any word. Add-ons are already plenty and growing.
Cons: There's nothing really. It used to crash too often at launch. But after some updates it is stable enough. Rarely crashes.

Pros: For the most part it's a good browser, and it's always nice to have a decent alternative to the junk that Microsoft puts out.

I haven't had any of the software problems experienced with some other people, so it must be a hardware issue. Firefox 3 crushes Internet Explorer 7, beats its own previous version, and outdoes Safari (WebKit.org, which hosts the benchmark test, developed the engine Safari is based on). When I ran the QuirksMode.org DOM 1 test, which measures the time it takes to create a large table using W3C DOM methods, Firefox 3 managed a very respectable 245 ms average over ten runs. That was comparable with Opera's 249 ms, better than the 340 ms of Firefox 2, and far faster than IE7's 1,352ms.
Overall, Firefox has never let me down and I have no reason to use any other browser other than Firefox. Most of the problems stem from hardware issues rather than problems with the actual software which I find to be very stable fast and useful in almost every situation. I have no problem recommending it and when you use it you'll quickly find out why so many people love it.

FF3.. give me back the 'olde FF'
Pros: love FF2 but FF3 a disappointment
Cons: the new FF3 messed up the Organize Bookmarks folder.. no longer html.. why??
the new FF3 messed up the Organize Bookmarks folder.. no longer html.. why??... it was the best of the best just like Netscape had it before that... e-z to utilize... just open the Organize Bookmarks from the Bookmarks drop down menu at the top.. keep it in the taskbar.. best way to access them... the 'new FF3 way' stinks... why .. why.. why...
I first loadedFF3 onto my Dell Laptop--Vista that I use for traveling.. after repeated attempts to use it.. it had to go.. and that's why I kept FF2 on the machine... my old Gateway XP Desktop still has FF2 and no FF3 for that one...
I know they aren't updating FF2 anymore.. keep on getting the notice to switch to FF3 on all my PC's.. looks like I'll be holding off until the FF3 team at Mozilla wakes up.. don't fix what wasn't broken...
Updated on Aug 31, 2009had to go back and do it again after my first experience with FF3...I just now tried FF 3.5.. all is the same especially with the Organize Bookmarks... what did they do to it... they are out of their minds messing around with the perfect Bookmark Organizer(in FF2)
have tyo hold out still using FF2... guess this is sort of like most people trying to hang on to XP rather than go to Vista as a last resort...
c'mon Mozilla wake up will ya'... redo that terrible Organize bookmarks folder in FF3.5

Still my favorite browser.
Pros: Much faster and far more stable than firefox 2, and also light years ahead of Internet Explorer.
Cons: I have no real issues with this browser.

Sorry I really tried it but IE 7 is still better
Pros: OK browser that works on just about any computer platform (Win, Linux, Mac). Clean interface design. It's a good temporary replacement browser during times like last week when a zero day IE exploit was announced.
Cons: I found Internet Explorer 7 and 8 Beta to be much more robust and in some cases even more user friendly. Firefox seems overrated by Microsoft hating zealots. Firefox has had it's own security flaws to update and fix at different times.

Cons: Crashes here and there and unresponsive on some sites I go to.

Firefox 3 is slow, it crashes and freezes, I hate it!
Pros: Better protection against some sort of viruses and stuff, sleek new look.
It's Firefox, and I like Firefox.
Cons: Its slow, it crashes, it freezes, it lags, it uses tones of memory
It crashes a lot, so when it crashes you go to restart it but when you double click on the firefox short cut after the crash a error window pops up saying firefox is still running, you must close it befor you retry, but firefox is not even running! Then you have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete, find "firefox.exe", end task, then restart firefox.
It uses so much memory, right now only one firefox window is open and its using 110MB of RAM!
I can go on and on...................
Do your self a favor, uninstall firefox 3 if you have it, find firefox 2 on google, and install firefox 2, you will be very happy
Updated on Jan 3, 2009Firefox 3 sucks, stick with firefox 2

I'm on FIRE!
Pros: Seriously, I think firefox 3 is great. It only gets better. How can people give this one star unless they're MS employees? Fast, ultra-customizable, and as neccessary as oxygen.
Cons: Firefox does not yet have a direct-to-my-brain blue tooth interface available.

Excellent -but needs "instructions" (see summary below)
Pros: + great add on/extensions (e.g. "Adblock plus", "Tweak Network", "Noscript", & thousands more
+Smart location bar (aka awesome bar) - I 'm ok with it
+built in security features
Cons: - Smart location bar (aka awesome bar) - I see why many do not like it; (see summary below)
- to fully utilize/understand FF3.xx, you really need to read "instructions" (e.g. Firefox Tips&Tricks& tutorials AMD cnet.com, etc.)
+Many built in security features (e.g. anti phising and doubleclicking left side of location bar will give you security information and other website info. Unfortunately, no more updates for FF2.xx (2.0.0.20 is last update) so only security updates will be to FF3.xx This is one of main reasons I finally switched to FF3.xx (latest version is 3.05).
- Because of the changes like the smart location bar, I did not initially find using all fo the browser's features as intuitive as FF2.xx. Such a tweakable program like FF will require reading the "instruction manual." I read Firefox.com tips &tricks and tutorial and found them to be lacking. So I had to read internet sites like cnet and their forums and the firefox.com knowledge base for more information. A central online "instruction manual" would have been easier.
+ and - Smart Location Bar (aka Awesome Bar). I can see why many do not like it. It can be intrusive (I'm ok with it). It displays your bookmarks and prior url locations when you start to complete new url in location bar (not issue for me as I always clear all prior history etc when closing browser).
I find the Smart location bar helpful. An example is I have many bookmarks arranged into many folders. It still takes some time to look through the folders. My "News" folder has about 50 bookmarks. Now I "tag" cnn.com and bbc.com with "world news tag" and my local paper urls with "local news tag". When I type "world news" in the smart location bar, only cnn and bbc is displayed. This saves me some keystrokes (not many). I can imagine if you do not already organize bookmarks into folders then the "tags" will be even more helpful.
Still there are many who would prefer the old FF2.xx location bar. The mozilla knowledge base will NOT tell you have to disable the smart location bar.
For repetition's sake, here is how you can make FF3.xxx Smart location bar function more like FF2.xxx (realize it will not be exactly like FF2.xxx; you will still have the star). One does not have to do these in order here but do need to do all four steps.
(1)In location bar type "about:config" (no quotes) then press "I'll be careful I promise" in the Warning dialog box. Then scroll down and highlight "browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped" and double click on it so that the value changes from default "false" to "TRUE" (now the smart location bar will only only recommend sites whose address one's typed directly before)
(2) Install the extension "Hide Unvisited."
(3) In location bar type "about:config" (no quotes) then press "I'll be careful I promise" in the Warning dialog box. Then scroll down and highlight "places.frecency.unvisitedBookmarkBonus" and double click it - then in dialog box type number zero for the integer value and press "Ok"
(4)In location bar type "about:config" (no quotes) then press "I'll be careful I promise" in the Warning dialog box. Then scroll down and highlight "places.frecency.bookmarVisitBonus" and double click it - then in dialog box type number zero for the integer value and press "Ok". (Steps 3 and 4 above will remove any bookmarks from showing up in the Smart location bar).
**Do not change the "browser.urlbar.maxRichResults" value to -1 or zero as some forums suggest. If you do so then you will get one one prior typed url when you look under the location bar. Leave the integer value at default 12. **
**If you cannot recall the default for any of the values from the "about:config" preference names listing, then right click the one in question and then press "reset".
I hope this helps others trying to get back to FF2.x location bar. But as stated above, I am ok with Smart Location Bar (aka awesome bar- corny name).

I love it! Some of its critics are far too fussy.
Pros: It works very speedily and well, and its on-line support (via F1) quickly and helpfully has answered all my questions so far - including how to repair dumb mistakes.
Cons: Nothing so far. Okay, configuring exactly how you want it to work can be complicated, but, given all the options you are given, it *has* to be complicated - and the help system is truly helpful.

Simply the best
Pros: Firefox 3 is a great improvement! If you takes time to customize it, you'll have something extra special. I've tried all the top browsers extensively and Firefox's reputation is solidly based.
Cons: The only drawback for me is that I prefer the IE Favorites drop-down menu. One can use the Firefox "PlainOldFavorites" add-on, but the bookmarks in PlainOldFavorites are not draggable, so you can't put them in your customized order.

My main browser.
Pros: Can maintain heavy use and multiple tabs (sometimes I stay online for hours). Rarely laggy or slow to load.
Cons: Too many tabs usually results in a freezing problem. Overreacts when you try to open it sometimes, leaving you with multiple windows. Slow to start.

Pros: I learned a lot about how to research and implement browser caused problems.

HOLY COW!!
Pros: Very fast and stable. Lots of add-ons and extras. Get Fasterfox and Tweak Network at Mozillaaddons to make this browser go even faster. The Dublin skin gives it a more Netscape look too(Netscape Navigator is Firefox with a better interface). Safe.
Cons: None and I usually am very thorough in my critiques.

Major disappointment!
Pros: Loads most Web pages faster than IE. Interface is easy to use. Has many great themes and addons including DownThemAll which downloads programs better than anything else I've used.
Cons: Those great addons don't always load when opening Firefox3. Doesn't close properly much of the time requiring a computer restart. Continues to block pop-ups from sites I list as safe.
The pop-up blocker doesn't function properly and continues to block sites that I have checked off as OK. Also, Firefox 3 doesn't shutdown correctly at times. If I try to restart it gives me an error message that Firefox is already running but not responding and I need to restart my computer.
I know these problems are not caused by me or my computer since the previous Firefox worked beautifully. I find it very hard to give a thumbs up to this version which is a shame because Firefox is a great browser when it works as it should. I would tell anyone who is still using Firefox 2 to stick with that one until Mozilla fixes the bugs with number 3.

Funny, this platform is so bad I can't post a review
Pros: It's pretty. People say nice things about it.
Cons: WORTHLESS. It crashes more than Aeroflot. It's less reliable than my GM car. It tells me less than watching the news. Buggier than a "Mummy" movie.
It's so unreliable that when I'm doing something that I simply cannot afford to have lost, I use IE. I guess that tells me what I'm doing wrong.
Adios, Mozilla. If you can't provide better plug ins and a more stable product, you need to die, just as my various tabs have died today - EIGHT TIMES so far.

A giant step backwards; not a happy camper.
Pros: Slick attractive appearance.
Cons: Buggy and unstable, frequent crashes. Arbitrarily disables other vendor programs, e.g. RealPlayer.
Since support for FF2 is coming to an end, I'm in the process of deciding what my next browser will be. For sure, it will not be FF3.

Cons: none I can think of at the moment

Slow, ugly, cumbersome.
Pros: None that I could find. And that was with trying it twice.
Cons: Slow, ugly, cumbersome--if I want to see the bookmarks I have, I go to "bookmarks." I DON'T need to see them everytime I click on the address bar... it just slows things down and makes using the browser that much harder. And the new version is SLOW.

I really can't see what makes Firefox so popular.
Pros: +The interface on Ubuntu is pretty good, but only on Ubuntu.
Cons: -Memory hogger
-Clunky, unintuitive interface on Windows.
-Slow loading for most webpages, particularly those with a lot of images (I have cable internet connection BTW, so it's not my fault)
All in all, Firefox 3 is a sure-fire miss that should be avoided at all costs. If you don't like Internet Explorer, Opera is a great browser, and well worth a look. You might look at Safari also, as it's pretty speedy and has a simple, clean interface. Google Chrome, though still in beta, is an excellent browser too.
Updated on Nov 22, 2008UPDATE:
NEGATE THIS REVIEW
After writing this review, I tried Firefox again, but got more in depth than I did before. I figured out what makes the browser so popular. The add-ons are customizable to make a browser that does everything you want it to do. In light of this, and that the browser is a lot faster than I thought it was, this review should be negated, as my opinion of Firefox has drastically changed. I would delete it, but CNET doesn't seem to have a way to delete reviews.

A Good Web Browser; But Not Many Big Improvements
Pros: This latest in the line of Firefox browsers continues Mozzila's tradition of good quality. It has good security tools, nice browsing features, and good browsing speed.
Cons: Firefox had slower browsing speed than IE7 during my tests, and as for security, IE7 is in my opinion more secure. Firefox still has the most cluttered interface than any browser I have ever tested.

Firefox was easy and efficient but no more.
Pros: I can't think of any pros. It tends to regard most downloads as pop-ups or malware of some kind and won't do it. Instructions for allowing downloads don't work. However, if a busy looking screen is good, then it's good.
Cons: F 3 refuses to load some sites and for unknown reasons it would not download Adobe Reader from adobe.com, reporting that "Firefox prevented this site (www.adobe.com) from asking you to install software on your computer."

Pros: Compared to FF2, none.
Cons: Looks & feels much worse than FF2. Messy layout, fonts all around (screen, bookmarks) seem smaller, fuzzy; icons incl. bookmarks lack crispness.
Updated on Sep 1, 2009To make amends, if that is what it is: This Fox is still not up to scratch, but it is improving - like, getting back to normal. It remains the browser of choice, fast, reliable and all that, yet it was better in its previous reincarnation. The devil is in the detail, and there is still some. For example, when editing bookmarks, organiser would have opened the appropriate, just-in-use folder automatically. It does not now, wallowing in the default, although logic would have it otherwise (like before). And this is what computing should be about. Something got lost along the way.

Its fast, its safe and its packed!
Pros: It is open source, i.e nerds everywhere review and improve the code. Its fast and eats minimal resources. With addon's you can basically extend the browser to do almost anything!
Cons: The cluttered interface is perhaps the only con of Firefox. Although you can go in to fullscreen mode to reduce the chrome.

Ridiculously bug ridden, 'awesomely annoying' bar
Pros: Does seem a little faster. System resource use is definitely a lot less, almost half. Firefox 2 used to use 55-60 MB of RAM, now version 3 uses less than 30.
Cons: I have to endure seeing that stupid Mozilla crash report at least half a dozen times and wait a good 10 minutes before I can start it up. The 'awesome bar' is a good idea, but you should have the option of disabling it in the options.

Should Still Be In Beta
Pros: Not much...the address bar suggestions when you are typing is annoying at first, then helpful when you understand what is being displayed.
Cons: I was very much looking forward to FF3...having struggled with the browser leaks for the past x years, I was hoping that the new version would reduce the memory intensiveness of the browser...it is still a memory hog.
Besides the memory leaks, which continue, ff3 also changed the way groups of tabs open...ff now appends them to existing tabs, rather than removing and replacing those that are already open. This is a feature that they took away from FF2 users for no apparent reason..what they should have done was allow the user to right-click on the group of tabs and open in new window, which would achieve the same function without removing the replace tabs that so many people like (present company included).
Very poor release...the ff community is starting to act more like Microsoft than open-source software.

Pros: It is a stable, safe browser. Never have to worry about net security with the built-in features. Add-ons are very good, you can do anything. Very straight-forward, does what I want.
Cons: Add-ons do slow it down. I have a 2.66 Ghz PC, but it's noticeable.

bugs - needs more work - went back to FF2
Pros: it is pretty much as FF2. Nothing noticeable that differs them really. I gather that all the goodies are inside, but hard to test them, if basic stuff does not work as it should.
Cons: That "new standard in browsing" can't even download 4 MB gzip archive without breaking it. Opera does it, FF2 but not FF3.
I have just went back to 2.0.0.16. IMHO FF 3.0 will probably be 100% usable sometime next year. Until then I stick to FF2.

Beta-tested? I doubt it.
Pros: If it crashes on open -- and it will -- you won't have to deal with its annoying "features."
Cons: Inadequately beta-tested "upgrade" with product support responses that don't make sense.
Should you get FF3 to work on any system, the address-bar fill-in alone will drive you to despair. No amount of fiddling with Options will make it fill in from your history -- only from your bookmarks. And it searches bookmarks for anything faintly resembling what you're typing, so you're essentially wading through drek.
As far as speeding up performance: forget it. FF3 moves at a fraction of the speed of FF2 and is far less stable.
That -- combined with the rude, perfunctory, and clueless support on Mozilla's site -- makes the "upgrade" experience a timewasting nightmare.

Cons: Most plugins don't work, Most sites don't work .
You must be joking. Either that or your editor is a computer illiterate baboon with a chimp on his shoulder named "Microsoft".
Aside from the browser being almost totally useless, what is up with the search bar?
I can't even see what I am typing in it, even when resized. I have the same problem various sites.
I have used Firefox 2 for a long time, but now I must jump trains. Even the IE8 beta stomps this browser in the dirt.

Can't use TabMixPlus with FF3!
Pros: The "plusses" *sound* pretty good...
Cons: Can't use TabmixPlus with this!
Is there anyone else out there who's disappointed about the fact that you can't use TabMixPlus with this extension ?
I love the way I can set TabMixPlus to open my stuff however I want, i.e. new tab, open in this tab, open in new window, etc., etc., etc.,! (And many more features!)
That's the only reason I won't even try it (at this point.)

Firefox 3 Upgrade
Pros: Saving pages is an excelletn feature
Cons: Haven't found any yet.
I have run FF3 on Windows 2000, XP Home, XP Pro, and Vista Home Premium. All seem to work fine. My required Add-ons, FireFTP works fine, I have not run across any problems loading pages or content, and I haven't had any of the problems I had with FF2 instability or crashing.
Before you jump on an upgrade, make sure you have a back up to reinstall your older version. This is just a good all-around idea.
Second, back up your bookmarks and add-ons.
If it doesn't work now, it may work at a later release, so be patient.

Cons: imagine releasing a browser that can't handle webmail mailto: links in anything but Yahoo.

I can't leave feedback on ebay anymore, the address bar now has rarely used bookmarks instead of the pages I've been to, and in the week I've been using it I keep getting a "firefox is already running please restart your pc".

What a MESS with Photodex
Pros: 'Most Visitied'
Cons: Photodex Online sharing crashes w/Firefox 3
Sunday we realized that there was a problem with '3' because Photodex's online sharing program kept jumping all over the page. I called, only to find out that my online sharing shows were actually crashing when the tech support people tried to watch my proshows - some as old as 6 months.
I am still waiting for a call back on how to repair this problem - they think Firefox should fix it, and I am starting to feel in between.

Released Too Early
Pros: A Little Fancier than Firefox 2
Cons: Buggy, Incompatible with Add-ons
It has turned out to be a disappointment. The first problem is that it is incompatible with a Kodak add-on that my wife uses to upload photos. Pretty annoying. I suspect there are other add-ons that also don't work, so look into that before you "upgrade."
The second problem is that it freezes up on me, leaving me no choice but to ctrl-alt-del kill it. My computer is an extremely stable, modern machine. Nothing crashes on this computer. Except Firefox 3. It's buggy and comes across as beta or alpha software. I give it a 3 out of 10 because I expect better from Mozilla.

Excellent release
Pros: Save tabs feature, download manager, zooming, awesome bar and all round performance improvements, as well as others.
Cons: A bit sluggish, still consumes an enormous amount of memory, flash is a bit troublesome and there are some bugs which aren't significant but nonetheless need fixing.
The UI has been updated which looks decent on my system. The bookmarks has been improved now with tagging. I use the tagging feature quite a lot. Memory usage is indeed much lower, though that's not to say FF2 had shocking memory leaks. The new password storing feature is excellent and unobtrusive, unlike previous versions. The download manager was always superior to IE's one, now it can pause downloads and resume, which is an essential if you download very large programs. Zooming is nice and is comparable to IE7, I also like the "Awesome Bar" that's good but not earth shattering, in fact I find it downright creepy.
There isn't a lot of negative things to say, however performance is not something I have noticed any great improvement in, it's probably just me but everything isn't much different when it comes to JavaScript and the like with web technologies. I hear that FF3 uses some SQL engine to store profile data, it actually does slow down the browser quite a bit and I imagine people will find FF3 a little more sluggish when organising their bookmarks. Other than that the browser has evolved and become something I recommend to everyone, this isn't a disappointment and if you are still using FF2, upgrade now!

Perfect,effiecent,Dazzling
Pros: Easier access to bookmarking,Quicker Loading Time,Nicer Looks, etc.
Cons: Nothing really
Firefox 3 is a great improvement as everything is easier to access such as new add-ons and adding new bookmarks. Some dislike the Star on the address bar because they do not understand how it works. The address bar opened up will show any bookmarks.Opening the bookmark toolbar will not show any bookmarks you got by pressing the star button.
Overall Firefox 3 is quicker, easier to use and has better looks than it's predecessors.

I have tried Firefox 3.0, I presently have Firefox 2.0.0.14, Opera 9.5 and Internet Explorer 7.0. Firefox 3.0 version is average.

Firefox 3 sucks!!! IE5
Pros: none none none
Cons: bloated and slow as hell
I'm so ticked off right now i don't even know where to begin.
Times out on large sites! Its almost feels like im using IE5 on dial up.It pauses for about 2 seconds.
Handles redirects and time outs by displaying Address not found! The fix? refresh a couple times loads fine.
More sluggish when scrolling pages or shifting tabs.
Sometimes wont load images you have to right click to Show image. Plus it loads and displays page elements diffrent.
Screw this i just want to browse i dont care about the cool flashy history drop down in the address bar.
Those pop up bars at the top **** me off. I liked the old way they had it. regular pop up less annoying than the whole page shifting.
Start up is more heavy on the resources.
The star in the url sucks.
I would type more but im closing this crap ware out and reinstalling firefox 2.

Just OK for me
Pros: Looks better in OS X, memory improvement
Cons: Some common sites render wrong.
I must say the UI is much better on a Mac then FF2. But still
Safari to me is still king on a Mac. You know what? I still have important sites like my bank which still don't fully support any other browser but Internet Explorer. I am really not one who really needs a half dozen browsers to surf the internet with. So I will probably stick with Safari. Firefox just does not do it for me. I use IE when I have too running Windows on my Mac's.

Firefox 3 is not perfect, but it definitely provides my best browsing experience
Pros: Rendering speed, good password manager, fabulous page resizing
Cons: Minor rendering issues, surprising difference between release candidate three and the final version.
And as far as I am concerned, the best new feature in Firefox 3 is its page zoom feature. In Firefox 2 and earlier, Internet Explorer 6 and earlier, etc., the only thing which one could easily zoom was the text size. Then, IE7 introduced a zoom feature which resized most elements in proportion, which is perfect for the New York Times, CNET and many other sites designed for many different monitor resolution settings. These sites display on wide-screen, high resolution monitors as a narrow, vertical ribbon with dead space on either side. In IE7, I would hit Ctrl-+ seven times and the New York Times fit perfectly on the 46" 1900 x 1080P HDTV in our bedroom, which we use as a monitor, and was easily readable from across the room. But this had to be done each time the site was displayed, and the graphics, though enlarged in proportion to the text, were extremely pixelated.
But now, Mozilla Firefox 3 has "borrowed" this feature and improved greatly upon it. The mechanisms to control the feature are the same as in IE7, but that's where the similarity ends. For Firefox 3 resizes images with nearly no pixelation, it remembers one's zoom level on a site-by-site basis and, best of all, it renders the same, zoomed pages faster than IE7 (or the IE8 beta, for that matter), this despite the much better zoomed image quality.
There are other improvements as well, but this is the big one for me. Try it! Either hold down your Ctrl key and roll the scroll wheel on your mouse or hit "+" or "-" to change the zoom level. Hit Ctrl-0 (zero) to return to normal.

CNet has totally blown it's credibility on this one...
Pros: It's New! It's not MS - that's about it folks.
Cons: Non commercial pages do not load well.
But the unrestrained enthusiasm over Every release of this mediocre browser tells me otherwise...
They may sway me on a cellphine or a bluetooth decision, and I wouldn't know the difference. But come on now. Just start opening pages put together by novice and I'm using IE7 to see what I'm supposed to see. Pages that aren't up to par do not work - but I never noticed the difference with IE. I spend more and more time somewhere designed by everyday people and I don't need to be looking for crutches every time I do. I have the distinct feeling that I made a bad decision once again experimenting with Mozilla.

First time Firefox User.....
Pros: Fast, stable, visually clean (on Mac).
Cons: No option to open new tabs from address bar, links etc.
One funny thing I noticed, the screen shots in the video review showed the Mac version of Firefox even though there was a Dell laptop on the table.
I am running both Max OS X and Windows XP on my MacBook Pro, and the Mac version is a lot nicer looking, cleaner, easier on the eyes (it seems) than the Windows version.

Firefox 3 is a major improvement in Browsing!
Pros: Loads quickly, does not have the lag time in closing of F2, uses less HD and memory space
Cons: None so far.
It won me over by fixing a semi-major problem I had with F2 - my machine would start using more memory and HD space when F@ f2 to the point where I'd have to reboot if I used the browser all day with other programs.
The problem is GONE with Firefox 3. It's smooth in operation and a pleasure to use.
I've also not seen downsides yet with the program...
I'd rate it a 15 out of 10 if I could.

very nice, but....
Pros: faster, cleaner, seemed more stable
Cons: no single file web page save

any pages i had saved previously
would not open which would have forced me

unacceptable!
the single file web page save is an valuable tool
for more reasons than can be expressed here
i am unsure the reluctance of mozilla
to support such a function;
combined with the 'ie tab' extension
the need for ie is eliminated
for everything except ms updates
i hope and wait for a solution

Doesn't Work
Pros: None Observable
Cons: Won't Start
out of 253 user reviews
I'm sure it will get better
Pros: Better rendering of pages
Cons: Too many load errors; no sidebar History
The first is that the changes to History render it less user-friendly (at least to me). Having it no longer available as a sidebar is a major pain. What's worse is that there appears to be no grouping by general site name. I'm still looking but the listing has now become a long, cumbersome construct. Tedious to search and even more tedious to clear entries.
The second is that I am experiencing a hell of a lot more page load errors and other caution icons. I find that I am no longer able to have as many tabs open and active before one or more give me an error message. Unfortunately, I suspect the problem is due to the requirements creep that occurs with new versions.
Other reviews have noted that this version is not backward compatible with a number of earlier operating systems (I'm running XP SP2 so I'm safe for the moment). However, I don't have current, affordable access to high-speed and I think that's what causing the load errors. It wouldn't be a great surprise to find that the browser baseline is set for high-speed and so dial-up speeds end up being interpreted as excess ACK delays or other problems with communications.
In summary, it's workable but frustrating at times. It probably addresses a lot of users' wish lists but for me, I may end up going back to version 2.

Outside of this issue (which is pretty big for me) FF3 is great. So if yo don't use Live Services you will most likely enjoy FF3. If it did support Live Services this would easily rate a 9. I hope this can be fixed.

Cons: less reliable
Felt it was important to update that Firefox crashed (and won't re-load or reinstall)on my home computer but is functioning on my work computer. I'm Impressed!!
Pros: Much faster on older machines
Cons: Don't like changes in Bookmarks Editor (Library)
I have only one real beef and that is how the Bookmark Editor works. It imports bookmarks from IE a LOT slower and the changes made in how bookmarks are moved between folders makes it more difficult, but I guess I'll get used to it.
Overall I'd give the Mozilla team an A - which is an extremely high grade for the "out of the gate" release of a major upgrade. Microsoft will have a high hurdle to jump over with IE8.

For WindoZ users the best browser is Opera.
But the ultimate beauty and elegance is of course SAFARI.

My advise: throw windoZ and FF in the garbage.
You want to really enjoy and experience what is real computer is - get a MAC.

Great Product
Pros: Almost everything
Cons: Does not support live streaming software such as SopCast
Apart from that, Firefox 3 is MUCH faster than IE 7 and 8 in page loading and is a fantastic browser

Nice Job Again Mozilla
Pros: Speed is the game
Cons: Not Windows 98 Friendly
The Awesome bar is pretty 'awesome', using a data-mining collection system to help the user with daily needs. When a user starts typing a URL in the box, Firefox starts to pull up a list of any website that you might have visited that sounds like it. For instance if I wanted to go to spreadthefox.com, if I typed in 'the' the website will come up as a list of choices. I've found it pretty convenient so far, with no problems so far. Although I clear my history at least once a day, the system doesn't have a chance to learn me.
The speed of the browser is far better because the engine is now the new Gekko 1.9 engine. What does this mean? Firefox no longer supports Windows 98 and OS X 10.2 and before.
So without repeating basically every thing else the editor said on the rest of the upgrades I would like to finish with one thing. UPGRADE, it's worth it.

Outstanding improvements
Pros: The faster speed is truly noticeable
Cons: A minor nit...formerly there was a button at the end of the address bar for refresh which is now gone!
If you take your finger off the Ctrl key and want to zoom out, type C+- with multiple -s if you need to move out further.
Simply outstanding.

Cons: Font rendering not as good as Safari

Good but memory problems still persist
Pros: New interface, slightly faster speed, less clutter
Cons: Memory usage
The only con at the moment is the persisting memory problem. I only have two tabs open with two plug-ins and it's already taking up 100MB of my RAM. I find that excessive and not much different compared to Firefox 2. But overall, it's a great update to a great browser.

Unable to use Japanese language
Pros: Nothing attractive under this situation.
Cons: Unable to use anyway.
it does not enable MSIME for Japanese language.
This character reminds me the ancient Netscape
before 3.72 in early 1990's. Since then to Firefox 2.0.0.14 I enjoyed browsing and searching regardless the language is English or
Japanese, on English versions of MS Windows platforms. Now with Firefox 3 precludes this possibility. I strongly protest against this.

Just keeps getting better
Pros: Faster loading, clean interface, user configurable
Cons: AddOns disabled unless you have Nightly Test addon
Many of your addons/extensions will be disabled due to the makers waiting for the final release version of FF, but if you have the Nightly Test addon, you can bypass the 'compatibility' problem and they will function. I only had one not work, and cause crashes (Skype plugin), and once it was removed, all ran smooth and sweet.
It was clearly stated on the installation page that most current addons will be disabled until they are updated. 90% of memory leak/memory problems are caused by addons, not the browser.
To bypass FF3 disabling the addons, use Nightly Tester Tools to bypass the disabling and use your addons.

An Awesome Browser
Pros: Very fast, very extensible, hardly ever crashes
Cons: None thus far.
The only thing I am disappointed in is that Acid 3 cannot be passed with this browser, thus far, but almost no other browser can pass that test yet with flying colors.

Cons: Bookmarks totally FUBARed

Memory problems still persists
Pros: Slick design, tabs, fast, excellent bookmarks, simplicity.
Cons: Unfortunatley, I was hoping that the memory leak problem would be an issue of the past. Just finished testing and it seems that the memory leak issue still persists.

Just another great browser from Mozilla
Pros: Great interface, sleek new look, seems to be faster
Cons: Not that many add-ons supported yet, not supported on Windows 95; 98SE; and ME
First, the new default skin seems to look way nicer than Firefox 2's. It also seems to be considerably faster than previous versions of Firefox. Speeds, which I think are pretty close to Opera. Being a Firefox user since the first version of Firefox 2, I can tell you that if Firefox's interface was as user friendly as it is now, I would have stopped using IE a long time ago.
One of the main things that bothers me is that only 5 out of my 13 add-ons work. That will soon get better. In the end it's not something to cry over and whine about. The new version of Firefox doesn't support Windows 98SE, 95, or ME. That's not a problem to me, but if it is, I'm sorry that you're missing out on the best version of Firefox.
With this great browser, the benefits out-weigh the cons. It is a well-crafted improvement over Firefox 2 and truly deserves to be the major browser over IE.

Best there is and ever will be period
Pros: Everything that was mentioned in the review above.
Cons: Official site crashed during the first 10min. of the release.
Fixed most if not all the bugs in RC3, super fast compared to IE7 but roughly the same speed as Opera 9.5, tight security, user-friendly design, "Awesome Bar", and so much more!!
I cant wait for the new addons that will ne implemented in FF3.
