Microsoft isn't ready to release Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP SP2, but it has released Internet Explorer 7 Release Candidate 1 (IE 7 RC1) to the public. If you already have IE 7 beta 3 installed, you won't immediately notice any changes. Microsoft has improved performance, stability, security, and application compatibility--not exactly eye-candy features. Microsoft has also completed its Cascade Style Sheet (CSS) changes, added foreign-language support, and now provides an autoinstall of previous IE 7 builds (previously, you had to remove the current IE 7 build before you installed the latest version). That said, IE 7 RC1 is clearly intended for Web developers and those looking to test its features in advance of the final release, still expected sometime before the end of 2006.

Installation of IE 7 RC1, however, requires that antivirus protection be turned off--an unusual requirement for an Internet browser installation--as well as a full reboot of your test system. Most competing Internet browsers are simply "download and use."

As for features, much has already been written about the tabbing capabilities within IE 7, and RC1 introduces nothing new here. IE 7 RC1 lets you move the tabs as you can within Firefox. Microsoft has also added the ability to visually display all open tabs but in a separate page, not via a mouseover, as you can within Opera. Another feature borrowed from Opera is zoom. You can wheel in or wheel out on a page, which is perfect for those with less than 20/20 vision.

Perhaps the most significant security enhancement is the new antiphishing component. Using heuristics, or algorithms, rather than white lists, Internet Explorer can analyze a given page and determine whether it's the real McCoy or a spoofed page. Should you land on a suspicious site, you'll see a golden bar across the top of the page. You'll have a chance to correct any errors, saving pages you know are not frauds but that may appear so within IE. In testing on live phishing sites, however, IE 7 RC1 failed to identify as many phishing sites as Netcraft's free IE toolbar.

Microsoft raises the bar on its own security, with a default Medium High setting on its security zone. If you ever need to lower the security zone settings--say, to install new software via download--you'll see a golden bar across the top of the screen, reminding you that you are now surfing under less-than-secure settings. You can use a one-click menu option to change the zone settings back. Microsoft has also neutered all but the most essential ActiveX Controls. If you need more, you'll be asked to activate them on a case-by-case basis. This should limit criminal-hacker attack vectors within IE 7.

Continuing within this release candidate is a complete Really Simple Syndication (RSS) substructure (hence, the reason for the reboot when you install the new IE 7 build). New RSS feeds automatically render as a fairly basic representation of all the current feeds for that page, plus any categorizing the site has done regarding specific topics.

Borrowing from other browsers, IE 7 will automatically size a page so that when it goes to your printer, you won't lose the content on the far right side of the page. The text may be smaller, but the text will be complete. You also have the ability to print only a highlighted section of a Web page. A new feature within IE 7 adds an address bar to every pop-up window, allowing you to determine whether you want to view that content (advertising, for example). Like Shrink to Fit, this feature is currently available in Firefox. And, although, Firefox and Opera have offered this One Click Cleanup of cookies, browser cached items, and temporary files for years, Microsoft has finally made it easy for anyone to delete their browser history and personal information with single click.

In all, IE 7 RC1 merely plays catch-up with the current releases of Firefox and Opera without pushing the envelope--and both alternative browsers are at work now on new releases due near the release of IE 7. For the office that can't or won't switch to these more dynamic browsers, IE 7 for XP SP2 will be a welcomed change from IE 6. But for sheer innovation and (yes) secure browsing, I recommend switching to Firefox 1.5 or Opera 9 today.

SUCKS the big one

Pros: nice looking icon

Cons: everything, everything

Review: not enough user input. security was way over done and it is nearly unusable. MICROSOFT REALLY SCREWED THE POOCH ON THIS ONE. any program should never assume what the user wants to do. IE7 only does that. it never asks you what you want. it might work fine with VISTA but it does not interface well with XP-PRO. PASS ON IT. DON'T INSTALL IT. if you do install it, you'll wish you hadn't!!!

All in all this is a step up from ie6 but certainly requires more work

Pros: Micosoft is trying its best to satisfy the user bay adding tabs

Cons: Unorganized basically needs a more firefox design

Review: All in all this is a step up from ie6 but certainly requires more work like Firefox's add-on system which is excellent also ff's superb organization and simplicity for the average user however the design should be enough i mean how many people open a 100 tabs also Firefox seems to use less computer power.Microsoft still has a long way to go but a 1000 mile journey starts with the first step...

SLOW SLOW SLOW

Pros: Tabbed Browsing

Cons: Slow speed, incomplete interfaces

Review: IE7 is a joke application. I like tabbed browsing, a la Firefox, but the speeds are turtle-like, and the interfaces are yet incomplete. It's like going back to dial-up. If you've still got IE6, for God's sake stick with it. I'd tell you to go to Firefox, which I first did, but I can't print stuff using it, a common problem. What am I saying here? Build a better browser, and the world will come running to your door.

horrible software

Pros: tab browsing

Cons: immitates other browsers

Review: I think Ie 7 of all releases has been horrible.

It is a rip off of Mozilla and is far more unsecure.

turn off your updates to be safe

User Rating: 8/10

I quite like it

Pros: Has most of the good points of Firefox

Cons: I use windows2000 and XP64

Review: It won't run on win2000 and although I am very pleased with how my AMD computers runs on XP64 I cannot obtain drivers for several of my peripherals

Cnet is wrong.....

Pros: Easy to use, fast, efficient.....

Cons: Needs bolder colors

Review: I downloaded IE 7 about a week ago and personally I think it's a great improvement and a welcomed change. It's nice to see Microsoft finally delivering "tabbed browsing", along witht he new phishing features. The only thing negative I would say about it is the colors could be more bold and not so light.
When I first downloaded it I really tested it and tried to get it to bog down or give me those many irritating "error pop-ups" like I would get previously. I have not received a single one since IE 7s download! To me, that says a lot. The RSS feed icon is another handy little feature and is something I use a lot. Alos, the the search box at the very top, right side is well placed and great that you can use several different search engines of your choise. I encourage everyone to try this out.
Cnet is way off on their review, way off. I'm very disappointed in their review and think they did not test this enough nor are they giving the new IE 7 a fair chance.

Holy Crap!

Pros: I would have NO idea

Cons: error in loading!

Review: Ok, here is what happens:

1. Oh, I see there is a new updated Internet Explorer. Microsoft says "free" upgrade.

2. I go to the microsoft site, download the software, which then loads onto this computer.

3. There is some error when Explorer 7 loads, and the program crashes.

4. What the hey! Ok, if I had not loaded Mozilla onto this computer before, how on earth could I ever access the internet to get any kind of a patch, or even use the old version of Explorer? This was almost (except for SAVE the DAY Mozilla) the end of the internet! Geesh.

5. I think sometimes I just don't know enough about these computers and their software. But, how the heck am I supposed to know what to do when my internet browser crashes!

Has anyone else had the same problems?

User Rating: 4/10

Had to uninstall due to instability

Pros: Like the features

Cons: Crashes office apps

Review: I had installed Beta 2 and liked its functionality but it conflicted with one of our apps so I had to uninstall. When RC1 came out I tried it straight away but I uninstalled the next day: why? Suddenly Word, Outlook and Excel starting crashing like mad. After the inunstall that went away.

IE7 is awesome.

Pros: Speed, tabs, RSS, security, everything.

Cons: No clicking sound; menu bar. =(

Review: I don't get the hatred for IE7. Probably because Mozilla has brainwashed people into thinking that any browser made by Microsoft is dangerous. IE7 is an awesome browser.

The one thing I love about Microsoft is how they copy features and make them sound more exciting. They did a good job with that and IE7. I like how IE7 handles tabs, and it seems a lot faster. IE7 has built-in anti-phishing (something Mozilla is stealing) and people have more control over ActiveX.

I don't like how you can't put the menu bar on the top unless you edit the registry. Oh well. And I really love the clicking sound with IE6. I'll miss that. :(

Microsoft is doing a good job with IE7 and I hope it continues to dominate the market.

Improvement over IE6

Pros: Looks better, like the tab options.

Cons: Does not work with Yahoo photomail. Many times have to refresh the page because it can not find the page I am looking for. Does not keep the cities I want in the weather section.

Review: Still room for improvment. Hopefully that wil come soon.

User Rating: 2/10

Hate it!!!

Pros: None......

Cons: Toolbar Positions & Grouping. Liked it a lot better in IE 6.

Perfect for the general target audience

Pros: tabbed browsing, sleek minimal interface, updated security features

Cons: probably still needs refinement under the hood, doesn't appeal to power users

Review: I think this will be a great browser for a very large portion of Microsoft's target audience. I downloaded and installed in about two minutes without any problems. I am using Windows Live One Care and I did not have to turn anything off or make any changes for the install. It was a one-click install for me. I have been using Firefox for some time now but I think I will switch back to IE. I use the "send page by e-mail" a lot and missed that in Firefox where I could only "send-link". Firefox was great but it was much slower than IE7 has been for me (3GHz,1GB RAM, Toshiba Satellite). My wife also had a lot of trouble with mysterious crashing with Firefox on her Dell and she stayed with IE becuase of it. So far the IE7 RC1 has been more stable for both of us and appears to be loading pages more quickly. I like the full screen menu float, the minimal but available tool layout which I think is sleeker and more intuitive than the default Firefox interface. Quick Tabs are very useful if you get a dozen pages open. Bookmark managment could still use a little more work but the pop-open : pop-close function is better than the pinned version in IE6. Zoom is great and nicely tucked away in the corner.
I am sure there will be bugs and problems as there always are, but bear in mind that IE6 still retains a HUGE share of the internet brower usage. Barring a high rate of bugs and problems, users of IE6 who upgrade to IE7 will be very happy and have much less reason than ever before to switch to Firefox. If they haven't switched in the past, why switch now when the gap is closing? Power users will still gravitate towards other browsers but soccer moms and casual users will find IE7 more than meets their needs. I have used a number of browsers by neccesity for web-design validation and I think IE7 is a bright new release. For speed, compatibility, (for my personal configuration), and usability I will be going back to IE unless some other browsers dazzle me with feature that I have-to-have.

MAY THE " FOX " be with YOU

Pros: new look it sometimes work on msnbc.com an M$ site

Cons: Lacks funtionability, dont match Fox (still best), Opera not even Netscape8.1 or IE6

Review: In short, IE7 is the Ford of Cars now a days.
Opera is good but FireFox just got so much and has such a big community working behind it that its only obtacles are few M$ sites like msnbc.com videos and that is been working on too.

So, the FOX got LOTS of Fire on its Heart:)

Locks up disables other programs

Pros: Its not on my system anymore

Cons: Crashed or wont work with other internet IE Musicmatch

Review: Good luck removing it and going back IE 6
IT's one of those programs I regrett ever
installing.

User Rating: 9/10

Excellent upgrade

Pros: matches and exceeds Firefox (for now)

Cons: what took Microsoft so long

Review: IE7 is the browser that should have been installed with XP service pack 2. I have been using it since beta2 and I have had no problems with it. I like it so much that I now use IE again as my principle browser. I still like Firefox and I look forward to its next release but for now I think IE is better.

Worthless because of blurred and washed out text

Pros: security and new features

Cons: text of websites is displayed blurred and washed out

Review: Hopefully microsoft will improve the display of text of websites. All websites I vistited with IE7 RC1 looked blurred, and text was washed out. After 10 minutes straining my eyes to read content of websites I developed an headache and quickly uninstalled IE7.
I don't have those problems with IE6 or Firefox browsers.

Internet Explorer 7 RC1

Pros: The tab browsing is great and runs better than Firefox. It is a big improvement over IE6.

Cons: IE7 was way over due. Microsoft should have had this out long ago.

Review: I really like IE7 RC1. It runs better than Firefox and looks good. I like the tab browsing alot. It works great! The phishing security slows up the loading of certain pages, but it's worth it to have the extra security.
I look forward to the full version of IE7.

Guess CNET does not have lock ups

Pros: Clean Interface, Great Tabs

Cons: Lock Ups, No Custom Skins

Review: Fire Fox is still more stable and reliable, but IE 7 is a worthy contender.

User Rating: 5/10

Better than 6, but its not only average, instead of below average.

Pros: Its heading in the right direction. The zoom feature is a critical need for me when working with high resolution screens.

Cons: Needs a lot more work on basic features and ability for user to customize. This is only a good start to me.

Review: Unbelievable that a company with the resources of microsoft has taken this long to make an effort at providing their customers with what they need and want. Actually it is believeable.

User Rating: 5/10

What's Better Than IE 7

Pros: It's free.

Cons: It's not Firefox

Review: I installed IE7 Beta and it was horrible. I hated the cluttered layout. I re-installed IE6 and I found that downloading Yahoo!'s toolbar with TAB BROWSING was much better.

User Rating: 8/10

CNet is Very Bised Towards ti this nice peice of software

Pros: Faster Than IE6, Clean Sleek User Interface, A Lot has improved since ie6

Cons: Still a bit buggy

Review: IMHO it is a nicer cleaner, and a more user freindly browser than thee mighty Firefox. And I have no idea why Cnet thinks its not very good, but htey are wrong.

User Rating: 5/10

Lost - The ability to open a webpage by clicking on a link in an e-mail.

Pros: Everything

Cons: Loss of E-Mail Link Clicking To Open A Browser Window

Review: I like this new browser much better than IE6. However, a big drawback is that I have lost the ability to open a browser window (tab) by clicking on a link in an e-mail received in Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook. Is this a bug or was this deliberate? I hope someone can provide a "fix" for this abberation. I tried Microsoft, but it is impossible to make a connect with their design engineers. Forget about the out-sourced tech support - that has to be the dumbest decision Microsoft ever made.

User Rating: 10/10

it's better then firefox!

Pros: it's better then firefox!

Cons: it's better then firefox!

Review: because:
1.the small and beautiful design
2.any website works!!
3.good security
4.easy to use

5.9-Giving IE too much credit!

Pros: Well...there trying... lol

Cons: Low security protection, no phishing protection, UGLY, not many add-ons themes or features.

Review: The average user rating for IE 7 is incredible. 5.9 is giving IE too much credits. It's not even worth a 1. IE is a poorly executed browser with horrible security, phishing protection, themes, addons and has a horribe interface. They should add some downloadable themes! I obviously don't use a browser like this. I use firefox 2.0 beta. This doesn't even compare to that or Opera.

User Rating: 5/10

ie7 rc1...i think its awesome

Pros: they said its really good

Cons: i cant intall it...

Review: how come i cant install ie7 rc1...it says always that its imcomplete...pls help...so im back with ie6 again..men it sucks..i need help...

User Rating: 7/10

Came a long way from IE 6

Pros: Tabbed browsing,Better Security

Cons: Hardley andy add-ons, of any you have to pay

Review: It's a great browser dont get me wrong, but its still got some places to patch up on. It very Close to the firefox browser. It would of been better if not the same as Firefoxif you didnet have to pay for the add-ons. Firefox has a add on that speeds up the time it takes to load a page and that is free. I dont see an add on like this one on IE 7 and if i do, im pretty sure i have to pay for it

User Rating: 9/10

Not one single problem with IE7 RC-1 so far.

Pros: IE 7 RC-1 is shaping up to be a excellent browser. Since beta 3 I have had no problems at all and so far IE 7 RC-1 is performing flawlessly on my PC.

Cons: The only real cons I see are all the negativity coming from CNET. I can't see how Robert Vamosi can say it's not ready for prime time is beyond me and a bit of a joke.

Review: I don't care what CNET or Robert Vamosi say IE 7 is shaping up to be a very good browser. We all know most of the CNET people all have a fondness for Firefox. And hey lets be honest Firefox has come along way as well. It too is a very fine browser and getting better. Every review coming out of CNET wants to loathe IE 7 and praise the virtues of Firefox.

I have not experienced any probs with IE 7 RC-1 or Firefox aside from the memory spiking into the stratosphere from time to time. But Firefox is (I'm told) working on that.

For those interested I'm running Win XP SP-2 fully updated and patched. 2.8GHZ Pentium processor, 1GB DDR 2 SDRAM Kingston. Stanard 3D video card and a 120GB HD. It's a pretty basic set-up. Oh and also 6.1 surround sound installed but that has nothing to do with my browser and surfing the net.

In my opinion all these people who are having problems have probably got some underlying issues on their computers already. Maybe something not patched a dodgy program installed, spyware or adware or worse.

By the way one thing I have noticed is IE 7 definitely seems to work better with the .NET framework installed. I don't even know for sure that IE 7 depends on the .NET stuff but I'm not the only one who has noticed it. Several of my associates have commented that there is a difference in how IE 7 behaves when the .NET framework is installed.

Maybe that will help some people who are having problems.

Fire the Editor

Pros: Stable, More Secure, Way quicker the FF, less memory

Cons: CSS - why can't they just fix it??

Review: Bashing anything from MS might be a ?Fashion? but one would expect a more accurate picture from an editor of CNET. I find myself spending more and more time on other tech news site, CNET is turning more and more into Slashdot.

User Rating: 6/10

Two main reason I'll stick with Firefox.

Pros: Under the hood improvements

Cons: Feature not compelling enough to use as a primary browser

Review: Adblock and NoScript. These two add-ons, or extensions, alone have defeated IE7. They both do their job, both are free and easily configurable. From my perspective, I haven't come across any showstoppers that make it compelling enough to use IE7 as a primary browser.

With that said, I do appreciate the effort put in to the browser and hope that new users and people who choose IE7 will be safer when surfing the Internet because of the under the hood changes. I agree with much of Cnet's article, but the headline is a bit misleading as it causes an immediate defensive reaction.

User Rating: 4/10

Inherits other tabs info?

Pros: Almost Like FireFox

Cons: Tabbed Browsing handles information differently

Review: When I do account administration for the same company, but use four different logins, the other Tabs inherit the login properties of the first Tab. For example(I haven't tested this yet): If I have 4 different Yahoo! accounts, open up 4 tabs and log into each of the Yahoo! accounts, they will, eventually, all inherit the login properties of the first tab. Thus, I will eventually be logged into the same account four separate times instead of logged into 4 separate accounts once.

User Rating: 6/10

Still needs work!!!!!

Pros: Most Features are OK (Prefer FireFox)

Cons: Screws up HP Director and probably Other programs

Review: Get HP problem fixed and could rate it a "7"

User Rating: 8/10

IE7 very good..CNET..Huh?

Pros: rendering engine is smooth, new print and tab options

Cons: still has some css quirks.

Review: IE 7 being a "beta" browser shows a lot of upside potential. Yes its got tabs now, and yes we all know Firefox had tabs before it. Should we mention Opera had tabs before Firefox? Does it matter? What matters is the implementation and IE7 thus far has really added a nice implementation of tabs and some other great features with enhanced security. In usual fashion it has the smooth rendering engine that renders pages in a similiar fashion as two other great browsers: Opera 9 and Safari 2.0. Im not sure what IE7 Cnet was looking at, but right now I'd have to put IE7 in my list of fav browsers along with Opera 10 and Safari 2.0.

Firefox is a nice browser but it has many quirks of its own with every new "non beta" release, it still has memory and cpu utilization problems especially when viewing sites with flash.

User Rating: 7/10

Overall very good, but has problems regarding stability which may affect ongoing work severely

Pros: Has multi-tab facility available on a single click, is fairly stable and provides more screen area.

Cons: May go off all on a sudden if many tabs are open & the pull on resources is heavy.

Review: Overall a very good product. Tab browsing is available more easily than the latest beta version of Mozilla Firefox (In the latter, you have to open the 'New Tab' option first & then choose it, in IE 7, new tab options are available on the screen always).
More screen area is also available in IE7,making it more uncluttered than the earlier versions.
This apart, IE7 opens much faster than its nearest rival (at least in my opinion), the Mozilla Firefox (latest Beta Version 2).
However, the entire browser may shut down just like that when many tabs are open and multiple downloading is going on, which are heavy on resources. Moreover, the Firefox latest version provides an option of restarting from the place where you left the browser, in case of any faulty or emergency shut-down of the browser. I could not find that option in IE 7 (Beta).
However, overall IE7 has the name of MicroSoft behind it, which no doubt lends much credibility to it.

User Rating: 10/10

Just Great

Pros: It Loads Quick Many Easy To Access Features

Cons: Sometimes It Tends To Freeze But Highly Unlikely On A Regular Basis

Review:

User Rating: 4/10

Pretty poor

Pros: Prettier interface than old version

Cons: Slow, fuzzy text, still hasn't caught up to firefox: no extensions or themes, no password manager, etc., etc.

Review: The browser feels slow, and for some reasonson all text appears fuzzy.

Firefox is still much superior to ie. Unfortunately you still needs ie for pages that are incompatible w/ firefox so at least this is an improvement over the old ie, I guess...

User Rating: 10/10

Better improving performance, stability, security than looks in my opinion

Pros: Better performance, stability, security

Cons: not trying to be flashy

Review: performance, stability, security are all upgraded. To me that is the most important update that a web browser could add

User Rating: 7/10

does it still break other apps?

Pros: becoming sleeker, more modern

Cons: breaks other applications

Review: The last release of IE7 I tried (Beta 3) still had application compatibility issues (Adobe Updater was the one I had a major problem with). Does anyone know if these issues are fixed or if programs such as Adobe Updater are still rendered useless with RC1?

User Rating: 3/10

Crapped my system out

Pros: I'm sure it will live up to its expectations

Cons: It crapped my system out

Review: I installed it and when i restarted, explorer.exe didn't want to load so nothing on my system would start. I had to ctrl+atl+delete to get to the task manager. Then run a new process which was msconfig. From there i was able to open the system restore and restore back before i installed IE 7 RC1. NOw my system works fine again, but on IE 6 with SP2

User Rating: 6/10

Much improved, especially CSS rendering. Ready now!

Pros: Interface, CSS rendering.

Cons: Years too late. Very little that isn't just catch-up.

Review: I'm grateful that broken parts of the IE browser now seem to work. It will be a long time before I forgive MS for allowing IE6 to fester out there for years with its lousy CSS problems. MS plainly just didn't give a damn about the misery it caused web designers.

I still much prefer Firefox's features, but like Opera most of all - for daily use and simply intuitive design. It's also the most stable and fastest of the browsers. I cannot imagine asking IE or FF to do what I do daily with Opera. It functions on a whole other level. No competition, in my book.

User Rating: 3/10

Getting better

Pros: Tabbed browsing

Cons: Still some faults

Review: Internet Explorer 7 is an improvement - all they needed to add was tabbed browsing to make it streets ahead of IE6. Unfortunately, MS have still not fixed the inability to save pictures that have been imbedded into messages. Click on save and all you get is that the system can not find the file. The help function doesn't work either.

User Rating: 4/10

Improved but nothing much.

Pros: Cleaner. Finally, tabbed browsing.

Cons: Anti-aliasing enabled by default. Odd layout.

Review: There is a reason why people switch to Firefox, Opera or even Netscape. IE 7 needs to do abit more to win back those that have left.

User Rating: 8/10

I second the opinion that CNET is wrong and biased

Pros: fast, clean interface, robust security

Cons: annoying security fetures that can not be disabled (not yet)

Review: Other than some truely annoying security blocking of pages, the new IE7.0 is a nice browser. I've used IE6 for over 4 years and then tried Firefox, which is a great product as well. But didn't really see a need to switch from a 'home grown' IE with the release of 7.0 to anything else.

I found too many inaccuracies in CNET's review to even go into detail. It seems their writing staff misses the mark more often than not...I hope nobody challenges me to produce proof to this, as it could get ugly :)

User Rating: 7/10

finally an IE version i dare to use alongside Firefox and Opera.

Pros: tabbed interface, greater security, sleek interface, option to delete all tracks

Cons: limited customizability, menus not so intuitive, seemed to have messed up my Miranda template scripts

Review: I had tons of trouble installing Beta 3, clashes with Zone Alarm and/ or other programs so that my computer couldn't even load up normally! Thankfully, after turning off all antivirus, firewall, antispyware apps, RC1 installed just fine. Having been exposed to IE7, it is quite hard to go back to IE6. it is definitely an improvement, has a clean sleek interface with tabs, and from what i read, is more secure. speaking for myself, installation wise it still seems to be quite buggy, and it's hard to troubleshoot.

i have Firefox, Opera, Flock and IE7 installed on my computer and use all of them, i enjoy the variety. though for online transactions, at least for now, i still prefer to use Firefox, somehow feels safer and the settings are easier to manipulate with my favourite extensions. IE7 is looking good though, i love the clean and sleek interface and the improved security a lot.

User Rating: 7/10

I like it.

Pros: Much neater than previous versions

Cons: Not happy about having to enter my password each time to access.

Review: Internet Explorer is not my home page as my ISP is BT/Yahoo who has their own version. There are pros and cons for both.
Looking forward to the final version of IE7

Complete Crap

Pros: I CAN USE FIREFOX INSTEAD

Cons: It is Complete Crap

Review: Has all the agility of a dead cow. Avoid at all costs. Use Firefox because it's better. Firefox is no great shakes itself but this is embarrassing, even for incompetent goons like the Microsoft crowd.

Goodness gracious, this thing is pig slow. Worse, it tries to stuff Windows Genuine Advantage spyware on your machine when you download it. BEWARE! What next, will we have to face Redmond and shout Seig Heil every time we boot Windows? Will I have to subsidize a security guard living in my house to make sure the family isn't boosting any Microsoft software? This thing is ridicuously slow. Firefox is a bit of a pig but IE 7 is just dead meat in mud.

Good going, guys. If Vista is as pathetic as this you guys can make a bundle shorting MS stock.

Not as good as Netscape

Pros: Their is just nothing i Like about it.

Cons: As for cons, the browser is just no good

Review: Just don't care for IE7 at all. I think Netscape 8 is much better.

User Rating: 2/10

It's terrible...more problems than it is worth.

Pros: Tabs and that is about it.

Cons: Disables essential features of other resident programs even when IE7 is not active.

Review: Needs a lot more work. Because of the failings of IE7 I have migrated to Firefox.

Wish I Could Redown Load IE ^

Pros: Pro`s ? Cool Gaphic`s That`s About It

Cons: Where Do I Start

Review: I don`t like the new IE 7. I have a Yahoo for e-mail along with (2) two sub accounts. In order to accesss my sub account`s. I have to sign out of the main account, Sign into the sub account #1. Then do the same thing for sub account #2. Sign in Sign out. Sign in Sign out. Sometimes I feel like I`m traped on a merry-go-round, & I can`t get off. Maybe I`m a creature of habit, but I wish I could redownload IE 6.

Not too bad

Pros: still testing the features

Cons: won't load several websites

Review: I do like the new IE 7 but honestly it won't go to most websites like yahoo or google sometimes. the feature for antifishing blocks most webpages it's annoying but I know that they are finalizing it so I'm waiting until the final product comes out! I do think firefox loads faster though and has less issues with it that's my opinion though. Otherwise IE 7 is a good choice with many nice features like tabbed browsing, browser add-ins and more. so bravo to microsoft good job so far keep up the good work!

IE is just not ready

Pros: Updated look is much more modern, but thats about all

Cons: Slow, Large, Buggy, Too Many Hackers

Review: This new version is just not good at all. If it had been released 5 years ago, they wouldve been at the top of their game and firefox never would have gotten its start because there would have been no reason. But unfortuantly for Microsoft they didnt and Mozilla was and STILL is the best browser out there

User Rating: 5/10

I think IE 6 users will like the upgrade. Other browser users take it or leave it.

Pros: If you like IE it will be easy to navigate. Finally incorporated features that other browsers have been using for years

Cons: Not fussed with it's installation procedures, and it's still the same ol same ol IE with extras

Review: I guess if you were using the old IE6 without all the features that come standard with other browsers already, IE7 RC1 looks and feels pretty specky and new. I personally don't see the need to switch to a browser that is finally doing what mine has been doing for a few years now.

And once again, when you install IE, you suddenly find some of your default settings changed. But that is pretty standard when installing an MS product, and easily remedied.

It makes a good attempt at Anti-phishing, but Netcraft Toolbar does better. I think with the extensions that are made for FireFox, there is a more content control than there is with IE.

Tabbed browsing.. been there, doing that already with other webbrowser.

Bottom Line:
If you use IE6, and want the bells and whistles that are already in Opera, FireFox and Mozilla, then this is the browser for you.

User Rating: 9/10

So why not?

Pros: It's not Firefox or Opera

Cons: Quality software from Microsoft as usual

Review: It would be nice if the article actually said why it's not ready for primetime, but it doesn't.

User Rating: 9/10

Talking about biased reviewers....

Pros: Fast, excellent tab support, zoom function, print preview

Cons: Not logically arranged icons and menus

Review: I think that the CNET's reviewer position that Firefox 1.5 is preferrable to this version of IE 7.0 shows a substantial bias. In the past, in the same e-zine, other reviewers came to a different conclusion. So, it should not be taken seriously.

Although not perfect, I would say that IE 7.0 RC1 is a huge improvement over IE 6.x and seems faster and less buggy than IE 7.0 beta 3. I think that it has the best tab support compared to competing browsers, an excellent zoom function, a print preview and adjustment and a nice way to manage add-ons. I cannot really comment substantially on the antiphishing capability but it hopefully works well enough to rescue the clueless.

Good find. up to par with FireFox

Pros: Tabs easy to use, faster browsing speed for me, & reliable

Cons: Still ahs great rivalry with FireFox

Review: IE7 runs very smoothly. I love the tabs compared to Firefox. It looks great too! I won't be using it on my new lappy, but I love it now!

User Rating: 9/10

Works OK and it has a lot of functionality

Pros: It has all the latest features found in other browsers, adds the phishing filter and other cool features not found in others and most important - big company behind that will fix security holes fast

Cons: a little slow and the interface could be prettier

Review: I have used the different versions of beta for months and it worked fine. I actually prefer Opera to Firefox (which looks like a bad display of Linux), but it has some problems with some sites.

User Rating: 2/10

Needs lots of work

Pros: nothing, not as good as Mozilla

Cons: not as good as Mozilla

Review: I have used Mozilla ane Internet Explorer 7. Mozilla wins hands down. IE7 is very buggy and resource intensive. I have had numerous crashes on web pages using IE7, something that rarely happens with Mozilla.

IE7 tries to do tabbed browsing but it is nowhere as convininet as Mozilla is. I have to open the favoriets using a certain button (because you can't do it from the menu bar) and then right click on the folder that I want to open in tabs. Mozilla is much easier.

I will continue to use Mozilla because it is much easier to use and faster.

Keep trying Microsoft, this is one battle you are loseing big time.

Ready but late...

Pros: Stable, great browser

Cons: Too late with tabs and RSS, etc.

Review: Microsoft is now playing catch-up in both their OS and their Web Browser. Tabs were already introduced in other browsers and so were RSS and other features. Not #1 anymore.

User Rating: 9/10

IE STILL ROCKS!

Pros: Awesome new interface and RSS.

Cons: None that are worth mentioning.

Review: Microsoft has come along way with IE7. Beta 1 was just plain BAD. Beta 2 was outstanding. Even then it blew firefox away. With the release of RC1 I have no complaints. WAY TO GO MICROSOFT!

User Rating: 5/10

The readers seem to agree with CNET

Pros: Works well with ActiveX

Cons: ActiveX is insecure and a thorn in everyones side

Review: While the basic phishing, RSS, Tabs are there, so is ActiveX which will continue to propogate on sites that do not care that other more user configurable browsers are out there. My problem is not so much with the browser, but with Microsofts continuing attempts to write non standard html that can only be read by their browser.

User Rating: 7/10

IE7 brings Microsoft even, but does not exceed where others failed

Pros: The tabbing featue is a nice touch.

Cons: To similar to opera

Review: I have had trouble loading some websites, and actually had to use opera to write this review. IE7 would not open the page. I found that this happened across the web at various sites. I found issues with the Microsoft site loading some pages The browser was give a face lift, but other than visual improvments its lacking in bells and whistles.

User Rating: 1/10

I tried to install the RC1 and it gave me an error message saying "ain't gonna happen."

Pros: can't say good

Cons: can't say bad

Review: wanted to try it out but couldn't; was referenced to a MS KB article that talked about editing the registry to get it to work...sorry i'm not on the level. If it won't install over a copy of IE6 that's fully updated well then...good grief!

User Rating: 5/10

IE7 is a fat, bloated memory hog!

Pros: Although it has some added nice features

Cons: As long as IE is running, my system slows to a crawl.

Review: Once I reboot and use Firefox, my system is much quicker and more responsive. The Windows Task Manager shows minimal usage by Firefox, whereas IE7 shows very high percentage of processor usage. I will stick with Firefox!

User Rating: 7/10

still needs work

Pros: nearly there

Cons: Favourites still limited

Review: I find the favorites very poor, not listed automatically in correct order, you still need to scroll up and down, not able to open all listed in a folder at once, tried to organise Favorites but not enough functions to do the job correctly.
I wont be using IE 7 Yet.
Sticking with Netcaptor which still takes a lot of beating, also Advanced Browser

User Rating: 4/10

Needs a lot of work

Pros: None None None

Cons: Takes a while to install

Review: Did not transfer my IE6 bookmarks.

User Rating: 7/10

Better than IE6

Pros: Tabbed interface

Cons: Forced search field

Review: Big improvement over IE6. I can't use Firefox and Opera on my office timesheet, so I just do the easy thing which is to use IE7 for everything.

Pros: Tabs work great. Glad they brought back the full menus in RC1.

Cons: IE search capability still no match for Google toolbar. Why force me to have an IE search field taking up screen space? The new menu system is stupid and ugly: it's just menus with icons instead of words and they take up space I'd like to have for tabs.

IE7 is just more evidence that MS "knows" better than I do how to configure my browser. The only reason I gave it 7 is for the tabs and I can live with the rest of the limitations.

User Rating: 9/10

CNET is always biassed on reviews (what's new?!?)

Pros: anti-phishing, tabbed browsing

Cons: CSS rendering

Review: once again, CNET is biassed on reviews! this RC1 version is way improved than beta releases. Much stable and faster page refresh.

To all FireFox users, go to special forums on criticizing IE! this is a review page for IE7, not a forum!

User Rating: 2/10

Not to good

Pros: Anti-fishing seems nice

Cons: All vertions of IE7 have crashed all 4 of my computers at some time.

Review: Uninstalled all IE7 from all computers. Will only use IE(6) for Win updates from now on.

User Rating: 2/10

Cnet is not bias

Pros: Ok Browser

Cons: Still catching up

Review: The new IE, is nothing compared to the brilliance created by Mozilla; personally I think Microsoft are still playing the catch up game.

User Rating: 7/10

It is honestly a lot better than 6, but aren't they all?

Pros: It has a wonderful tabs feature (like most modern browsers) yet this one's little new tab button just feels great! Better support for web standards is very long over due. It's all around OK.

Cons: Outside of the new tabs button, it just doesn't feel right. And it lacks (or seems to lack) a few of the nice perks that come with some other browsers.

Review: I have been using the last beta since shortly after it came out, and I must say, the only time I use the browser is to view microsoft's website, since they have made it pretty hard to do anything in any other browser... like see their beta site. I'll continue to use Firefox for the time being... opera could still me away, but IE 7 is certainly no match for the others.
Updated
Being so bias in my opinions about Microsoft in general, and how I just love Firefox, at first glance, I hated this browser. Now though, after forcing myself to use it for a couple of days, it has really grown on me. I really love the default font, and the Quick Tabs feature. I do miss a few little things from mozilla FF, but I also miss a few things from IE while using FF. Unfortunately, no one has comprized the best of IE, the best of FF, and the best of Opera to make the best browser... untill then, I'll continue to use both IE, which reads Hebrew fonts MUCH easier, and FF, just because I'm used to it.

User Rating: 8/10

Its nice,is it the best maybe?

Pros: Multiple webpages

Cons: Can run rather sluggish at times

Review: I thinks its nice.I have tried firefox, and just felt it was missing something. I have tried other generic browsers but found myself like many others going bck to what works.....IE!

User Rating: 3/10

IE is ugly

Pros: It loads correctly

Cons: My goodness, it is very ugly.

Review: A crappy company like AOL can come up with a smokin' good browser like the AOL browser, yet IE 7 is very very ugly. What is going on at Microsoft?

Yuck!

User Rating: 3/10

Firefox ripoff

Pros: has most of firefox's cool features

Cons: its still IE

Review: if i wanted a firefox ripoff i would just stay with the real thing. microsoft fell too far behind and this new version is only to play catch-up with firefox and opera. but they both have new versions on the way, and IE will once again be a previous generation application

User Rating: 7/10

Much better than Cnet sez...

Pros: EZ setup; bright sharp display

Cons: On two newspaper sites hedes bled (bad at site?)

Review: Very pleased with results. Not as speedy as Firefox, but expect the final will be on par.

User Rating: 2/10

Once again M$ is too late

Pros: Nothing nothing nothing

Cons: Trying make us believe that they care

Review: Ms has once again trying to take it's customers for fools. All they did was to copy features from FireFox and opera 9. It is no more secure than IE6. I'm with Robert, For a secure and safer browser I'll stay with FireFox/SeaMonkey and Opera.

User Rating: 9/10

Great Browser

Pros: Fast Loading Tabbed Browser Clean Interface More Security

Cons: None at the moment

Review: I dont know what some people are griping about!
CNET are biased against this Browser, and I dont know why. Some people are against it because its Microsoft, and I would like to point out that if it werent for Microsoft most of us on computers today wouldnt be on them, because they would be impossible to operate.

I have had this browser for two days, and find it great; far better than any other I have used. My pages render fast and clear; my RSS Feeds work simple and fast, and installation was a breeze. You should switch off any Anti Virus and Spy Scanner as you are instructed and you will have no problem installing.

I have been using Firefox for a long time, but I am seriously thinking of switching back to Internet Explorer, which at the moment is far faster.

User Rating: 9/10

agreed with cnet being biased

Pros: fast loading, internet page tabs, great new appeal

Cons: still not the final IE7

Review: i feel that IE7 has made a far improvment from IE6 and would use it over any other free internet browser out. this is also not the final editoin of IE7, and will become even better

User Rating: 2/10

Not ready for download

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Blew out my Webroot Spysweeper and my audio

Review: Not as good as the previous edition which I use. Not happy with what it did to my software, hope they can get it right!

User Rating: 9/10

IE7 Works Great for Me

Pros: Extremely fast. Lean. Seems Compatible with all pages I use. Tabs. Quick view. Speed is excellent.

Cons: Honestly, I can not say anything.

Review: I agree that the CNET reviewer's comments are nonsense. In my opinion IE7 is the best browser on the web and I have tried Firefox (which change without my permission numerous preferences) and Opera.

User Rating: 2/10

Pre-RC1 Beta was better

Pros: Nice interface

Cons: Mess Up Everything Else

Review: Have been using the pre-RC1 beta and have been impressed. Installed RC1 and about everything I have either quit working or works with great effort and slowness. Have switched back to version 6 and Firefox.

User Rating: 4/10

There are better browsers now

Pros: a bit better standards support, some long missing features

Cons: still very bad support for standards, childish interface, not as many extensions and themes

Review: IE7 is too little too late. There are better browsers like Firefox, Opera and Konqueror already here and they all have much better support for web standards and have more features. And new versions are already in the development and when IE7 comes out it will already be old again. I see no reason at all to wait for IE7 when we can already get better browsers now. And they are all developing faster and Firefox and Konqueror are both open source which is big plus.

User Rating: 9/10

Works Great

Pros: Faster, More screen showing

Cons: slow to install and may have to shut down anti virus

Review: Downloading internet explorer 7 works great now. Just wish that it would work with all web pages. As some come back saying that it not compatible with my internet explorer.

User Rating: 9/10

I agree. Cnet is biased!

Pros: faster load than firefox, tabbed browsing, antiphishing tech, improved security, simple and clean interface, ease of use

Cons: installation takes time and requires reboot.

Review: To say that IE7 "is not ready for primetime" is just an understatement. Cnet has devalued a browser that has been drastically improved. I been using firefox since the beginning of IE6 and now it seems that this new browser can really be a competitor, unlike the older version. It seems that IE has always had a faster load time and now with the addition of newer and more secure features, it is possible that IE can regain its prestige.

Firefox and Firefox

Pros: Firefox and Firefox

Cons: Firefox and Firefox

Review: Firefox!!! Nuff Said.

User Rating: 2/10

Lacks CSS support

Pros: Better than 6.0

Cons: Requires WGA, CSS,

Review: IE7 still does not come close to supporting as much CSS as the other 2 do. They need to work on that before this browser is released.

Stop trying to copy Firefox, come up with your own ideas. IE7 interface is an exact replica of Firefox. At least Opera could innovate to some degree.

Plan on validating your copy of Windows, with Windows Geninue Advantage, if you plan on trying IE7.

User Rating: 8/10

Stable, Quick, Works.

Pros: Clean interface, Fast Browsing, Phishing Filter

Cons: Scripts Still A Little Slow, Needs More "Wow" Features

Review: It's a strong contender, and it'll be enough for Microsoft to keep the lead in ther browser war for the next 3 years at least.

User Rating: 9/10

An Excellent browser that is definitely ready for prime time.

Pros: An excellent browser. By far the best out there.

Cons: None that I have seen.

Review: This is the best browser available. Its functionality is well thought out it exceeds my expectations. Easily installed and very stable.

User Rating: 1/10

Absolutely Not Ready for Prime Time

Pros: None tha I could find

Cons: None that I could find

Review: Could not get this beta to install on my PC. After downloading and running the update I received an error message stating that the update had not completed. I was then directed to a Microsoft web site that would "give me directions for resolving the problem." The resolution was either to disable my anti-virus software and try the update again or modify my registry.

I tried the former and still was unable to complete the update. The latter solution was complex and required multiple changes to the registry. I did not try this one since simply playing with a beta version of IE was not worth the prospect of srewing up my PC.

User Rating: 9/10

Cnet is horribly wrong (and biased)

Pros: tabbed browsing, anti-phishing filter, higher security defaults, very quick load, very quick page rendering, no (Firefox) memory leak

Cons: it still sucks at CSS rendering, it's font rendering with ClearType is still mediocre at best.

Review: "this browser still is not ready for prime time."

Are you kidding? What about this browser is not ready? It handles RSS far better than Firefox could dream of. The anti-phishing filter is a nice addition. The default medium-high privacy settings is a huge plus. Tabbed browsing in general is a massive time saver. This browser is on par with Firefox in every single category. Oh wait, it doesn't have the disgusting memory leak that Firefox has had since forever.

Don't get me wrong, I love Firefox, I've used it since it was Firebird, but there is absolutely nothing about IE7 that is not "not ready for prime time". That is just inaccurate and almost funny.

Wheel Mouse and Sidebar

Pros: Clean interface

Cons: Sidebar options limited, Refresh button should be on the left, wheel of the mouse won't respond just after the page starts loading when scrolling Favorites

Review: The main deficit is that when scrolling Favorites wheel of the mouse won't respond just after the page starts loading.
This seems to be unusual because it is not the case in FF 2.0b and Opera 9.

User Rating: 4/10

It's okay. Not great, but good.

Pros: An up-to-date interface.

Cons: They're about 10 years behind.

Review: IE7 is an okay browser. Definitley a treat to people who have been using IE6 for awhile. The user interface is a major improvement. But this doesn't score high on my list for 2 reasons.
1. It's Microsoft. The security will be penetrated in about 2 weeks.
2. Firefox and Opera and Netscape and Safari have had these features for years now. I do recommend trying this, but it's not as good as 3rd party browsers out there.

User Rating: 8/10

Good looks but plays catch-up

Pros: Compatibility; Visual content

Cons: Features; Usability

Review: The new IE7 is way better with its new features and I love the way it renders pages; it is the most visually appealing browser. However I prefer Opera 9 for security, ease of use and an excellent feature set.

User Rating: 9/10

You can view websites with images!

Pros: Websites can be viewed at FULL screen resolution!

Cons: No future support for USB 4.0??? Why not?

Review: I was so amazed when I first tried this as I have never seen googles site look so awsome! This version of i.e. is twice as good as the jump from i.e. 5 to 6! I mean come on, can you really tell me there is a better way to surf the web? Don't even get me started on how great it was to go to ebay using i.e. 7rc1. Bidding was way better than ever!

User Rating: 9/10

Has all the features of the Internet!

Pros: Tabbed Browsing, a Phishing filter, Popup Blocking, and an RSS reader

Cons: Many sites aren't yet compatible with IE 7

Review: Internet Explorer is copying the Netscape interface. That should make more people use it.
