The Aiwa CDC-MP32 has an AM/FM radio and plays both audio CDs and MP3 CDs that you've burned with a CD-R/RW drive, so you'll never run out of road tunes again. We were impressed by the CDC-MP32's very clear FM reception, solid MP3 playback, and slick mechanism that conceals the unit from thieving eyes.

Disappearing act
Turn on your ignition, and the blank front panel of the CDC-MP32 does a little dance, its two pieces flipping and sliding away to reveal the display and controls. When you turn off the unit, the word Goodbye appears on the big, bright, colorful display. This is followed by a faint swish before the panels fold neatly away again.

Once the unit is ready to play music, the smart input selection shows you only what is available: CD when a disc is loaded and CD-CH when a CD changer is connected. The other input options include three groups of six FM presets and two groups of six AM presets. Finally, there's an extra that all car stereos should have (but few do): an auxiliary input jack on the front panel. This makes it possible to use an , a , or any other portable audio device without resorting to a cassette-style adapter, which can degrade audio quality and is somewhat of a hassle in general. You can set a default audio level for each source so that you won't be blasted by high volume when you switch from CD to FM radio, for instance.

Clear channels
The Aiwa tuned in as many clean FM stations as our older but more expensive reference unit--a first among the car MP3 players that we've tested. The sound, however, is a bit hard-edged. The FM tuner saves you from missing your favorite programs by turning on and tuning in to any station up to twice a day--even if you happen to be listening to another source at the time. You cannot program the CDC-MP32 for specific days, so it's seven days a week or nothing at all (until you cancel the setting). Also, we wished that the tuning buttons skipped the nonpreset stations, to speed up channel flipping.

The Aiwa sounds good when playing MP3 CDs and displays artist, album, and song title, thanks to ID3 tag support. Separate buttons let you navigate between MP3 files or folders. All of these features are great, but controlling a single row of 13 buttons while you're driving is not. Luckily, the CDC-MP32 comes with a simple remote that fits most steering wheels. It controls audio source, volume, and selection of CD tracks or preset stations.

At $350 plus installation, the CDC-MP32 isn't especially cheap, but people who want MP3 CD playback, great FM reception, and a snazzy antitheft mechanism should check it out.

Lived Fast. Died Young. Left a Good Looking Corpse

Pros: Loved the format support. Loved the cool retracting face. Solid MP3 playback even with corrupted files. Loved the navigation of folder accessibility for organization.

Cons: The dust cover is sorta flimsy. The split face still says "im a car stereo". Sometimes it would start playing but never open. Sometimes it wouldnt close because it thought there was something plugged into the AUX port, which there wasnt. All that would be

2 week after my warranty expired it broke.

Pros: I was able to have albums that the player could play through.

Cons: It did not paly all of my CD/MP3's. It is now broken after two years. I expect when I pay a lot of money for something to get a lot of return. I feel cheated.

Good all around system, MP3 Player!

Pros: Plays mp3s, one CD is like a 10 hour trip. Flip front avoids stolen radio. Looks very nice at night. Comes with remote. Easy Install.

Auto security bites you in the end

Pros: Easy to use. No issues playing CDRWs filled with MP3s. Liked the display and info it gave.

Cons: Auto theft deterrant (auto closing door) causes lots of problems - especially when it sticks. The cable finally wore out after 2 years of flipping back and forth. For $220, that's lame.

Pros: +The flip-front face +The front AUX input +Easy to see display +I was able to get rid of it

Cons: The unit seems to skip MP3s after a while (like 1-2 hours on a long trip). Also, a few times, the unit wouldn't open and it would just start playing. Might be my car. Faceplate broke once, but the replacements are cheap (I think my friend kicked it by

Pros: This product has a fair price, and loads of features. Love the remote control, MP3 playback, and the flipping face (when it works).

Great looking Deck. too bad it doesnt work half the time

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First one I bought, the CD player wouldn't read CD's of any type. I returned it and recieved a new one in its place which worked fine for about 7 months and now about 45% of the time I start my car the screen comes up blank, buttons don't respond (except remote buttons), but the radio plays. If I turn off the ignition and turn it back on it works again, well most of the time. I would not recommend this product if you value your sanity.

Updated CDC-MA01 is better

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought the WMA-playing version of this, the CDC-MA01, 7 months ago (fall '02). Haven't had any problems with the flap. At time it was only WMA-playing car stereo under $300, bought it for $230 from Crutchfield. Doesn't like CDs with file trees deeper than 2 or 3 layers, and random only works in single folder. For the money worth it. If only i-River made a car stereo.

Good value for money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: installed about 9 months ago $200 at crutchfield. Magic Flap broke off during installation. It is only visible when the car is off so I did not replace it. It looks even more unattractive to car thieves .Remote is dificult to install on Right hand drive vehicles. LCD stopped working last month. THe cable that connects the magic flap the body of the deck is apparantly damaged. Costs about $6. No parts Diagram online through so I am not sure I ordered the correct part. Sound quality is OK. Was good value for money when I bought it. I am from the caribbean and have not had any problems with the deck sticking.

Broken flip? Here's a fix

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I enjoyed this player until it was torn out of my car this morning, but it did get stuck in hide mode, especailly in cold weather. To get it to flip when it's stuck i smack it on top pretty hard. This can't be good, so what you can do to keep in from going to hide mode (yes i know it defeats the purpose, but someone who is going to steal your stereo already knows the difference between remove the face and flip it over, so i think it's pointless) is stick an 1/8 inch plug in it all the time so it never flips over.

Very nice and affordable unit

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I too was annoyed by the add but figured it out from the manual. Beyond that the only other complain t is it works best with higher quality CDR's the cheap generics skip and pause all the time. I have found that TDK woks best. Beyond that I love it. I have about a 1 hour per way commute every day and this is the best part of it. IT is like having our own radiao station.

Totally Satisifed

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Over a year old and all is well. Plays everything I can throw at it. Skips once in a while on bumps, but that is expected. The flap is a little cheesy and really doesn't cover it well but overall this unit was well worth the money. Has over 10,000 hours on the cd player and still cranking.

"Magic flip" isn't worth a flip

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I like the external audio source, which makes it easy to hook up any portable audio device (including an "old" tape player). However, I've had a repeating problem with the unit's display getting stuck in the hide mode. This leaves the unit stuck wherever you last left it (i.e. radio station xyz with the volume stuck at whatever level it was set to when you turned off the car's ignition). Unfortunately, there is no option to keep the face open when you turn off the car. Their support line will tell you that your only option is to take it to an authorized $ervice center.

Great for the budget-conscious

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For the budget-conscious consumer, the Aiwa CDC-MP32 is a great choice. The folding flap never fails to impress passengers (though its value as a theft deterrent probably isn't high). It does what you'd expect from a basic MP3 player: display ID3 tags, offer random play, ability to organize songs into albums (folders). Those looking for more features will want to spend more money, however. You can't randomize across folders. Only songs contained within the current folder can be played randomly. Also, MP3s will restart from the beginning when you shut off your car. This is especially annoying when you just want to shut the car off but leave the accessories on to listen to music. Cutting the power for even a second will cause the MP3 to play from the beginning. Those of you worried about a motorized face failing do have reason for concern. I've owned this unit for 7 months and the flap has jammed twice. The second time this happened, I was rather forceful with the face in my attempts to get it open, and it has never happened since (it's been 4 months). I've read reviews blaming hot weather for the jamming, but I seemed to see no correlation. Other functions of this receiver are as basic as its MP3 playing ability. There is no equalizer; just a 3-level bass booster that no audiophile would use. I do find the remote control to be useful, unlike a lot of other reviewers. Removing it is extremely difficult, however, so I'm not sure how I'm going to replace the battery or move it to another car. This review has a lot of complaints, but I still believe the unit is a great value. There's nothing that makes this unit really stand out other than its price. But when you have little to spend, you're more concerned with value than extra features, and I think the CDC-MP32 delivers on that front quite well.

Great MP3/CD Player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For the money, I couldn't imagine a better deal. I wrote this mainly because I want to respond to the people with problems. They are saying the thing skips, but I noticed they all complaing of the skipping on MP3s. I think this may be an issue with their cd burners or they are using cheap CDs to burn them onto. I have had no problem with skipping. I have a newer generation CD burner, use slower speed to burn, and use audio-quality CDs to burn onto.

A total piece of junk after 12 months

Pros:

Cons:

Review: MP3 mode skips easily. When temperature drops below 40 CD's won't play. Front panel will often stick closed. Very slow MP3 seek time. MP3 mode is very picky about type and quality of media used. Unit run very hot, hot enough to ruin some CD's especially CD-RW's. Unit was way over priced at $379, now they are giving them away. I did like the front panel auxillary audio input so that I can plug in my reliable sony portable and play MP3 reliably.

Built to last 13 months

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Everything worked fine as long as the temperature stayed below 85 degrees (the 'magic flap' won't flip over) and the car isn't moving (try driving in the city without it skipping more than 10 times a minute), that is up ntil a month after the warranty ended. The piece of garbage just stopped working all together. Aiwa refuses to fix it unless I pay $120 labor. On a one year old $300 receiver? Are they out of their minds? What a waste of $300.

I think I've solved the skipping problem!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all I love this deck, got it for $129.95 @ Circuit City. I won't go any further as to why I like it; the other reviewers have already covered the bases. My deck does skip when playing mp3 cds, but as far as I can tell it only does it when playing a high bitrate (192 and above) track, and when the ride gets bumpy. Only when those two factors coexist. Has anyone else made the same observations?

Best Buy For The Money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: What a wonderful bargain! Can't beat the MP3 capability, rich sound and abundant features for $150! Add a decent theft deterrent and you've got an even better deal... First off, to get the most of of this CD deck, READ THE MANUAL!!! Plain and simple. Other reviews whine and complain about issues that should be non-existent. Such as: "you can't turn off the annoying BEEP heard with every action." Bull. Page 3, first paragraph. And someone complaining about their cd pausing after every track? It does that because you BURNED it that way! Not because of the Aiwa player. Don't get mislead on statements such as those. This is possibly the best CD deck in its class... It can scan mp3's as well as audio cd's, which is a big plus for me. Plus all the other positive features you'll read from others! Enjoy!

Great Unit For The Price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all, the two major complaints about this deck seem to be that it skips, and it restarts songs when you turn it back on. To address the first issue, reset the unit using the small button next to "function," and it doesn't skip anymore. Magic. Second - no it doesn't. Unless I have received the one unit which works differently than all others, the CDC-MP32 resumes play right where it left off. Now that the major complaints have been addressed, take a look at what the unit has to offer. The faceplate is attractive, although perhaps bright. It has adequate power for most listeners, and the sound quality is better than anything else in this price range (assuming you buy it at the commonly discounted rates around $200). Mated to my Infinity Kappa speakers, the sound is very impressive. For the money you will spend on this unit, there is nothing else out there which offers the same sound quality, power, and feature level as this unit. And it doesn't skip.

Best value right now

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Sounds great, hasn't skipped for me yet, easy to install (although that will depend on your car). A bit worried that the mechanics of the "flip face" will start to jam, but that has not been a problem yet at all...to be safe you may want to purchase some type of extended warantee. Note that this model used to cost over 300 dollars, but now has come down in price due to the release of the new models (a great value!).

Frustrating!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This player has one thing I do not like and one thing that I cannot tolerate. The thing I don't like is everytime I turn off my vehicle and start it back up the mp3 I was listening to starts back at the begginning again so if you make short trips you listen to the start of the same song several times over (very annoying.) The thing I cannot tolerate and the reason I spent $300.00 for another player is: The dang thing skips WAY too much. If I hit a small crack in the road, pot hole, anything makes it skip. I tore it out and put Panasonics new CQ-dfx572u in and have been very happy with it, does not even skip when I pound on my dash and try to make it. Don't by the Aiwa unless you have the smoothest riding car in America.

One of the Good Players out there!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This player is nice. It skips sometimes, but I feel that is if the cd is scratched a little. Usually other players would play it with some scratches, but this player has problems at times. The sound is good. My remote didn't come with a connector for the cdc-mp3 and they stopped making the steering wheel connector in 6 months after my purchase since it came out. I'd recommend looking at others if you have a higher budget. The kenwoods are good too, but I haven't tried them. Also, this player plays all the bit rates upto 320 kbps and I dont have to worry about burning at a particular bit rate.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It skips all the time, driving or not. The player doesn't read ahead like most of its competitors so any little bump causes it to skip. It has very few adjustable options, you can't turn off the annoying BEEP heard with every action. It skips a lot!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I like this CD/MP3 player, it has a lot of options and the price is reasonable. However, if you are looking for a quality MP3 player, then don't buy from AIWA! It skips a lot, and can be very anoying. I have a portable MP3 player that plays CD-R/CD-RW MP3s and it hasn't skipped once playing the same CDs. It seems that the skipping problem with AIWA CDC-MP32 is not due to shocks and bumps, etc, but more due to the way it reads the CD-R mp3 media! It skips even when the car is parked!

This is a Jaw-dropper!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got mine as an open-box stereo at BestBuy for $233.00 for free install and a few inexpensive parts. From the second I saw it the stores I was impressed... After research (as any good penny-pincher does) I found that it is far better than the previous model and many other MP3/CD players... It reads the Id3 tags on the mp3s and displays them for you... sometimes it may be hard to find a specific song and access some advanced features, but the sound (at 50 watts per channel!) is jawdropping and is easily tuned with the Bass, treble and balances. One favorite is the H-Bass function which doesn't add loud thumps but a awesome bass fill-in which you can usually only get with an amp and some subs... The display has a contrast setting and you can change some buttons from blue to red... The theft prevention is a little unconvincing but really anything short of taking the whole unit out is useless against thieves... a "theft deterrent" usually only comes with very expensive units anyway... The Final Word: If you shop online at least go to a BestBut or other techie store and ask if the have one you can play with... (be sure to bring in a MP3 cd from your collection!)

Best MP3 Car Audio Going

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Have had this player for 5 months now and have only one minor complaint; It always starts either the song or album from the beginning when turned off. Not a big drawback. Overall performance is great. Little skipping, reads ID3 tags, sound quality is good. If you install, please make sure you do a full setup on the panel with all of your fav's set. That will make it easier driving. Decent disappearing feature (the JVC El Kameleon) is much better. Overall the best out there.
