DeLorme Earthmate GPS PN-20 - GPS receiver

Entered CNET Catalog: 05/24/2008

SKU: 019916006341

Manufacturer: DeLorme Mapping Co.

Manufacturer description

The Earthmate GPS PN-20 is a unique all-in-one GPS and mapping solution. Unlike other handheld GPS manufacturer's devices, no additional mapping software purchase or subscription is required. DeLorme Topo USA 6.0 DVD software is included with the device, with beautifully detailed topographic and road maps of the entire U.S., available aerial imagery, and a broad range of GPS capabilities. Based on features, capabilities, and ''under the hood'' power, the Earthmate GPS PN-20 is fully-positioned to compete at the high end of the handheld GPS market. Its high resolution (220 x 176 pixel) transflective color screen delivers exceptional visibility under a wide variety of conditions, including direct glaring sunlight. The 12-channel, NMEA-compliant receiver includes STMicroelectronics chip technology with SiGE frontend noise reduction, plus DeLorme firmware for fast acquisition times and outstanding signal retention. The device is WAAS-enabled for accuracy within meters. With its proprietary Kalman filter, the Earthmate GPS PN-20 also addresses the complex problem of reflected GPS signals, which could otherwise greatly decrease positional accuracy.

Great features, but poor performance.

Pros: Feature laden with terrific mapping and rather intuitive to operate. DeLorme maps are the best available. When it works, this unit rocks!!!

Cons: Motherboard failing after 2 years of limited use and there is no recourse. The company won't do anything at all. I can use it until it fails totally (scary scenario) or buy another one....so much for standing behind your product!

Review: From the outset, the unit declined in performance. In warranty response from the company was great. Out of warranty and the unit's motherboard is going bad and it's too expensive to repair at 2 years of age and very limited use. Satellite acquisition times increased from long to unbearable and battery life went from barely acceptable to almost none.
After expressing no confidence in their products that would not allow me to purchase another, they offered nothing. At the very least they should offer a trade-up deal to previous customers.....happy or not. They really don't care about their customers!

Just doesn't work very well

Pros: Excellent Maps (both on the unit, and the PC based TOPO USA map product that is bundled with it -- I would give that 4.5 stars) Ability to view aerial or satellite images over the map.

Cons: Extremely slow calculating routes. Will fail to calculate routes on complicated road routes. My cell phone can determine its position faster than this unit. Main use is for trails, but it often loses its position in deep woods.

Review: Very disappointed with product's performance. Love the TopoUSA map program that runs on my PC however (despite its difficult to learn interface). Useful for figuring where you are in an automobile, but not for computing complicated routes on the go. Can take seemingly forever to figure out where it is (especially when moving). It's OK for hiking (but bring a map and compass anyway for when it loses its lock). If you expect to be able to use in your car, spend your money on an automotive GPS and you'll be much happier.

Slow screen updates and route recalc

Pros: water proof, Compact bright screen

Cons: Slow route calculation, Slow screen updates, Slow screen scrolling, Slow zooming

Review: I originally bought this to use for car navigation and for Boating because I could download NOAA charts and the screen shots look great. Those items work but the screen updates are too slow when making course corrections in tight spots (5-10seconds). This gps is really built for hiking and perhaps canoeing. Road trip calculation really takes too long and if you go off route it will not catch up unless you stop. I visited the forums at DeLorme and was given good advise from power users but it still did not meet my needs. If you add the NOAA charts it really slows the system down. It is really difficult to plan on the fly and was advised to plan my trips on my laptop then upload them to the GPS. I don't generally carry a laptop on my ski boat. I plan on returning it.
