  • "The best ultra lite unit"
    on

Summary If you need to carry it around with you this is probably the best out there. The display is necessarily small with the inherant readability problems but useable if you have the time to stare at it a bit. Someone wrote earlier that it took 2 hours to download 8 meg of maps to it. My experience is that serial downloads are quite fast, a minute or two and therefore believe that he has a serial port problem.

Pros Small, water resistant, fun to play with, customizable

Cons No color screen, and no address functionality.

Summary For people who have a good sense of direction this is all you will need to get anywhere by any means of travel. I just mainly bought it as a glorified compass for my vehicle, but I use is on my kayak and when biking.

This thing actually fell out of my kayak and was submerged in about 5 feet of water. This water didn't even phase it and no damage or water got inside of it.

I went biking with it the next day mounted to my handle bar on singletrack bumpy trails. It worked great and let me know how far I was from the car at all times.

A great buy. Note, upgrade your firmware from Garmins site to fix a bug with the WAAS capability.

  • "Great*Big*Quality features, in a small package!"

    Pros Garmin gives superior support...

Cons Close to it; just not 3 meter accuracy in my area yet.

Summary Purchased it to mark a honey hole (fishing spot)when I find it. Unit was 3yrs 4mths old (used)with the original 2.0 Firmware on it. Updated on-line (about 18 mins) the latest February '05 released info. GPS is up to date now, with a Calendar, Sun-Moon info, Hunt-Fish info, a Calculator and an Area Calc. added. It's a heck of lot more than I was looking for. A reasonable price to boot! If you Fish, Hike, Hunt or Travel --BUY!

  • "Small and easy to use"
    on

Summary I bought eTrex Legend with Canadian MetroGuide CD map. I find the map very detail. With 8 Meg of memory, It can still store entire Toronto and its surrounding area detail street maps, plus most of southern Ontario enhanced basemaps. Lake maps is very details, as well. 8 Meg is quite enough for most of driving, boating use. I was most suprised by the small size, compared to other GPS units. The drawback is that the connection to computer is only by serial port. It takes about 2 hours to download 8 meg of maps to the unit. Fortunately, I only have to do it once. I'm hoping Garmin will come out with a USB connector for the unit.

Pros nice hand held unit. pretty easy to use. I've used it on the open ocean and was able to navigate back to port without any other aids

Cons sort of eats batteries but that's easy to deal with

Summary buy it. Good Device, pretty easy to use. Had it for several years but it still comes in handy
