Garmin eTrex Venture (discontinued)

Garmin eTrex Venture

Entered CNET Catalog: 11/16/2001

SKU: 010-00225-00

Manufacturer: Garmin International

Manufacturer description

The eTrex Venture offers a worldwide database of cities and increased internal memory. It is also one of three eTrex units that are designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This product will provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections. The memory capacity of one megabyte allows the eTrex Venture to accept downloaded information from Garmin's new MapSource Points of Interest CD-ROM. The CD enables users to download locations such as restaurants, hotels, shopping, and entertainment. Once the information is loaded into the unit, you can make a selection and telephone and address information for a particular point of interest will appear on the screen. The CD also includes marine data such as lights, buoys, wrecks and obstructions. The eTrex Venture comes housed in a stylish, translucent green case.

Useless crap

Pros: Feature rich, but that's uselss if it can't read a signal...

Cons: Waste of money, if you are anywhere near a tree, or clouds.

Review: I've had the Venture for a few years. I've been tempted to send it to Garmin, and tell them to cram it,even though the warranty and such expired long ago.
It takes like ten minutes for the thing to boot up and find satellites, and then a passing cloud or proximity to a tree or large bird is all it takes to disrupt navigation. Forget about using it hiking, if their are any trees along your trail.
The rating system doesn't allow a score lower than a 1.

It wasn't that easy for me to use (out-of-the-box) AND, what, no maps?

Pros: It's waterproof, has major cities as a default. Good for tracking without maps

Cons: Need to buy maps. Couldn't really seem to zoom in fine enough detail (tracking)

Review: It's probably typical, not just with Garmin, that you need to buy the maps separately. I only paid $98 new, so I will have to wait until I receive the map I ordered ($49) Points of Interest to give it a "honest" review.

Poor Antenna

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The antenna system is poor and can easily loose satalite reception. Even your fingers can cause reception loss. It makes it very difficult because you can only ensure satalite reception if you carry it in your hand, away from your body, the whole time you hike, fish, hunt, ect.

it's great

Pros:

Cons:

Review: for just a bit more money than the etrex yellow, you get a much nicer screen, and a "joystick" to enter data and choose from menus

Not great, but not bad for occasional use

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this model for the purpose of going hiking and hunting. I was a little disappointed the unit doesn't do more things for the amount you pay for it. But all in all, not a bad unit at all.

Just the thing I needed!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After checking several Magellan and Garmin GPS-receivers I've got everything I needed for my outdoor activities from hiking in Germany to offroad-driving in arabian deserts in one easy to use GPS. The PC-interface-cable makes it easy to get software-updates and (not yet needed) additional data from CD-ROMs.

Cool Toy

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Well as a new GPS owner I have found Garmin's Web Software support to be very user friendly and the unit is easy to learn how to use.
