"Another solid performer from Garmin" on by pjirinec

Pros: 4.3 wide screen has a nice display. The color used have high contrast and make it easy to read. Keeps trarcking when surrounded by tall buildings. Unit powers itself on/off as the ignition is turned on or off. Very easy to use.

Cons: Windshield mount has a very short arm. Must use menu to adjust sound volumn. The "Jill" voice is a bit mechanical sounding. Cannot set a voice warning for over speed.

Summary: This is not my first GPS. I've had the 755t about a week now and put about 400 miles on it. So far no problems. Like all GPS devices it can be a bit funny about getting it to find your destination. I do wish Garmin would setup an option to entry just the zip code instead of city and state. I also wish one could do state entry with just the two characher Post Office abbreviation. Like my last Garmin it is a solid perfomer and the traffic info has been every bit as accurate as anything I can get off the FM radio or XM radio (meaning it is not 100% but is still very useful). I was concerned about the advertising on the screen but the ads are small, unobtrusive and infrequent. Don't let the ads sway your decision on this unit. The colors on the dispay are high contrast and insure one can read the screen at a glance. Keep in mind that those same high contrast color choices can make the screen appear somewhat cartoon like. The corner display lane assist feature has popped up a few times and been a great assist when it appears. Centered in Philadelphia I have yet to see "reality view" lane assist display. The lane assist display in the upper left corner yeah, the main screen lane assist display negative. The 3D building display when in the city is pretty much fluff in my opinion. The maps on the unit have been as accurate as any unit I've ever used. The power cable being connected to the cradle instead of the GPS unit allows one to quickly removed the unit from the cradle without needing to fiddle with the power cord. There are parts of the city one should not leave an expensive GPS unit in plain sight! The screen display is most interesting. As one is driving it will zoom in, zoom out, toss in the traffic overlay, take traffic overlay back out and sort of screw the screen around during sharply turning maneuvers. In the first week I only caught it delay for a few seconds redrawing the screen twice. Garmin units are, my opinion, on the more expensive side of portable GPS, nevertheless, one only gets what one pays for.

"Not Bad I like it." on by the computer genius

Pros: simple screen, decent routing Traffic Alert I like the fact when looking for a poi it tells you how far (and what direction the place is in)

Cons: A little slow when detecting off route, Database is slow in finding poi, as a Nuvi 660 owner I found out they took away looking at the Satalight screen. When pulling out of a parking lot it doesn't start navagating unitl you come to blue line...

Summary: I am a previous nuvi 350 owner and a 660 owner. As always I liked Garmin because the company backs it's products and they are in America. However I've always found there Data Base slow and not accurate. I decided I'd try another brand and I went with the Magallan 4370. After 2 defects I decided to buy the 775t. After I got the 775T I went a brought a 3rd magallan.

I've been driving side by side with these two unit's for about a week now. and here is what I feel. The 775T is a simpler interface and accurate. I feel the routing is more efficient than the Magallan. Sometimes Magallan win's but most of the time Garmin does in the routing. True the Magallan gives you the option of 3 routes to go in when using the detor but as a first choice the garmin most of the time won with effiicentcy. When in comes to Initial route they are both about the same.

When driving the screen on the Garmin is much easier to deal with. it's faster and the interface is simpler. (less buttons to push) I've also come to realize on the magallan sometimes you can push the icon and it does not respond. NOt good when drivng.

As far as Database the Magallan Win's hands down. You can look up by zip code and search all cities and of course the convestional way . You can search by city and look up addresses the conventional way with the Garmin but not the Zip code.

I love the colors of the map and detail on the Magallan much better than the Garmin.however the Garmin is not bad you can get a realistic view in 2D mode with north up setting. One thing that is better on the garmin while traveling the map is smooth.

Traffic when not in Route. They both are compairable. At first I thought the magallan was winning because it lists the same road with different tieup spots on the first screen. However I later on found out the Garmin will list a road You push the button to look at the infomation for that road if there is other infomation you just push the arrow button down. I like the Garmin way better once again much simpler.

When in Route when it comes to traffic alert the garmin will notify you of a delay in time on the first screen. (while driving) and if you can get more infomation and choose to avoid the tie up. the Magallan makes a pop up and explains everything in the pop up (in small print ) and gives you an option but once the pop up is gone thats it. I like garmin's way better. (the garmin print is legable and simple not wordy.)

Notifcation of turns Magallan wins on that hands down. the Magallan notifies you in half a mile and keeps on repeating the turn is comming up. the Garmin most of the time anounces a turn at .2 of a mile. I wish garmin would improve on that.

Starting out from a parking lot. I've noticed the magallan was better with that. let's say you are in the middle of a parking lot and you exit to a road the magallan will guide you at whatever road you are at. The garmin determans where the route will start and only guide you from there. A work around I did was when I came to that road (any) I replug in the infomation.

Magallen has newer maps becasue when I was in Davie Flroida it found the correct way to this complex the Garmin did not have it on the map. However when it comes to details of older maps I feel the garmin won because on roads that were older the garmin picked up on streets that the magallan didn't (go figure) mostly small side streets.

What I really dug about the Magallan was it came up with 3d sign exits in much more places than the garmin, Also when on the highway there is a one button you can push for an exit for hotel and food establishments. You can get that with the Garmin but you would have to push the unit two or three times and the data base is slower.

Both unit's are great however where it's more important for me (the simpler interface and the more accurate routing) I will have to go with Garmin reluctanly.
I love the features of the magallan but where it's important the Garmin wins.

Also on my 3rd magallan I did get 1 time can't dectect hardware for tmc please reset unit. I constantly got that on my 2nd one. With the Garmin I did have one shutdown after I updated the firmware but that was it. I trust Garmin to back up my unit more than magallan. I feel when I'm on Tech support with Magallan they are out of the county and I was on hold for 10 min's just for them to tell me to push the reset button. In the Past with Garmin I've exchanged my unit out witht them with express mail so I feel much better with Garmin With Garmin they also talk english and in America.

In conclusion I really wanted to keep the Magallan because of the Database feature and nicer looking maps and the fact you can choose alturnative routes. However with hardware issues and the fact that Garmin had a simpler interface and more efficient routing Mostly I will have to keep the Garmin.

hopefully in future I can have my toy and my quality

One more thing I forgot to mention. I believe the magallan is a little faster when it comes to off route response. also the magallen seems to be able to be more sensitive when you are on a service road of an expressway than the Garmin. Both will pick up change but the magallan is a little faster in that respect.

"Suspect and inefficient routing and late instructions" on by r1violin

Pros: Menu is very easy to navigate. Routes are easily accessible as a text list. There are more POI's than you could ever need and when it comes down to it, this is an amazing piece of equipment. However...

Cons: Final turn instruction is consistently given too late. No "multi-turn" instructions (turn left, then turn right). Text-to-speech is a bit garbled at times.

Summary: While most Garmin reviews seem to be overwhelmingly positive, I am confused as to why. They come up with interesting features and the menus are easy to read. However, the big important feature is the routing, which does not compare to the Tom Tom units in my experience. More times than not, I am told to turn............ "NOW!" which can be quite frustrating and even dangerous. Also, if there are several turns in a row, this unit does not warn you, so you will be ambushed with the second turn and often it's too late. The screen animation is overall fine, but at times jerky enough to make it difficult to judge where you are in relation to the next turn.

In the few trips I had with this one and two in my parents' car with their Garmin, the route was strange, taking us on roads that seemed to back-track more than necessary. I must admit that I have always found my destination, and was always on time. I guess that's the point, but the Tom Tom gets me there on more predictable roads and does a better job of estimating my arrival time.

While you probably can't go wrong with any GPS, I strongly suggest a Tom Tom.

"Great overall unit -- 8.5 out of 10." on by arajani

Pros: See he full Review here: http://arajani.blogspot.com/2008/11/garmin-nuvi-755t-review-85-out-of-10.html.

Great interface, free lifetime traffic with minimal "ad-supported" distractions, spacious LCD

Cons: "Integrated" traffic receiver is integrated into the car charger, not the unit itself. This makes it difficult to buy a second receiver for another car b/c they retail for $200 each.

Summary: Great overall product that suffers from slightly misleading advertising. See the full review at Cause and Defect here: http://arajani.blogspot.com/2008/11/garmin-nuvi-755t-review-85-out-of-10.html

    Enjoy!
