Pros Excellent voice recognition; fast processor; clear screen, locks on to satellites very quickly, the unit separates with the press of a button from its mount
Cons The 855 has no off switch
Summary The 855 is an excellent GPS unit. The processor is fast. It plotted to route from eastern Pennsylvania to my home in Califonria in a few seconds. When I drive a route an puposely go off course, the 855 has a new course plotted in a few seconds.
Pros Speach recognition is very good and quite helpful. I bought it for that feature.
Cons It doesn't tell you the street you're approaching, only the street you're driving on.
Summary Knowing the street i'm approaching is a useful feature that exists in previous models. The lack of that feature in the 855 makes this model much less useful. I know what street I'm driving on, I what to know that street i'm apporaching.
The lack of this feature outweighs the speach recognition.
Pros voice commands, large, bright display, simple learning curve
Cons speaker should have higher maximum volume
Summary The Garmin 855 is a very nice unit. I've owned Tom Toms and Magellans before, but they never had all of the features I've wanted. This unit has it all, it's easy to use, has a nice display that's very easy to understand, it has text to voice, and best of all, it has a very functional voice activation system. The thing actually understands your commands, and doesn't have to be programmed for each user. The system is so effective, that you never have to even look at the unit to input new destinations or instructions. It's biggest shortcoming is that the speakers are not loud enough - I can hear and understand them when I have the radio playing at normal volume, but it would be nicer if they could be a little higher (my Magellan was tops here - you could set it at very high volumes, and the instructions were easy to hear and not distorted). Other than that, this unit, bought at Costco.com for $249 is by far the best unit I've ever owned, and I think it is an excellent value for the money.
Pros Good picture qualitity, easy to use
Cons The map screen doesn't have mileage to go just time of arrival. When arriving at a turn it had no warning.
Summary After reviewing the Garmin 855 It left out some very important features I wanted. I had a Megellion 800 for 3 years and was looking for a new product that had good customer support.
Pros graphics, icons, finding stores etc
Cons froze up constantly, provided wrong directions (off main route, etc) for route, GPS hardly able to re calculate route after I chose not to follow its poor choice of directions.
Summary if ti weren't for the above, it would have been an awesome product- nice screen, good graphics, good voice to tell location.
