Pros: Simple Interface, Good Voice, Quality Directions
Cons: Sometimes slow to fix on sat, only yearly updates
Summary: After returning a TomTom I was having problems with I decided to give this Garmin a shot. For the most part I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer simplicity of the device. It just works and works well for the most part, with an easy to input menu system and easy navigation to local venues. However, upon further use it turns out that this cute little device isn't without its flaws.
So here is the breakdown of the pros and cons:
-Small, very portable device.
-Quality voice directions, even for the computerized one.
-Almost without fail will get you there.
-Great visibility, never had problems seeing the screen in daylight.
-Simple as it gets menu system. Some may say too simple, but it's perfect for the application.
-Search local attractions, restaurants, etc. Great feature, all I have to do is either search food types or type in the name of a restaurant and off I go.
-Yearly updates, ***? There are a ton of missing venues on this thing because it only updates once a year. Give me a subscription service so I can get directory updates once a month!!!
-Sometimes takes forever to lock onto a satellite. If you turn this puppy on in a new location from where you left it, it may take a few minutes to lock onto the satellites again. Annoying, yes; bearable, yes.
-Music player is completely useless, why even include it?
-The map is not detailed enough. Maybe it's just me but I want the equivalent of google maps with satellite overlays on my device.
-Slow to navigate the map, slow to search. Anyway you slice it, it takes way too long to just find locations via the map. It also takes way too long to do a local location search by name if you don't narrow the search parameters.
-Cheap case. The plastic feels very flimsy, much more so than the TomTom.
-Doesn't always take the shortest route (To be expected to a degree)
-Can't find an alternate route plan. If it calculates a route and I don't like it there doesn't seem to be a way for me to say, calculate an alternate route!
So there you have it, this is no miracle machine, but can drastically reduce headaches in the car. It is a great little device, but makes you quickly realize how much you would want a device that can just run google maps in your car with GPS and all the great features google maps comes with.
Also, I should note, this would have gotten a 9 out of 10 if they had regular updates. When I love and rely on the location lookup feature so much it is simply unacceptable to say that this "phonebook" is only getting updated once a year.
If you can find it for the "buydig" price listed below then it's very much worth it. The retail selling price of this device is outrageous.
For those willing to live with the shortcomings to get a no frills device that works pretty darn well, this is a recommended buy. For those waiting for the next gen miracle device, keep holding out... you never know.
